THE Oyo State workers, on Monday, rejected the N9,400 proposed by the state government as the minimum wage in the state.

The workers, under the auspices of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), at their congress held in Ibadan, said that was not the agreement reached with the state government.

The state NLC chairman, Olanrewaju Bashir, told the Nigerian Tribune in Ibadan that the government had directed that vouchers be raised in line with the last payment.

He said the issue was not discussed with the workers, saying that it was when the congress heard that vouchers were being raised for the payment of N9,400 that they (the workers) challenged them (government).

Bashir said though the workers had concluded when to commence strike over non-implementation of the new minimum wage, they would not hesitate to join the national body when the strike commenced.

He said the workers would meet with the representatives of the government today, to continue negotiation on the implementation of the new minimum wage.

The state NLC chairman said the union would hold another congress tomorrow, to brief the workers on the development on the matter.

Hehe. I am starting to like this Ajimobi guy. Rather than just giving in and paying the N18K wage, he is negotiating to reduce the cost of his workers.

Good move. Maybe he'll be able to settle for N13k or N14k when it is all said and done. . . still cheaper than the N18k.
Re: Oyo Workers Reject N9,400 Minimum Wage by ektbear: 1:56pm On Jul 05, 2011
Here was his rationate earlier:

Governor Abiola Ajimobi had said honouring the new wage agreement with his predecessor would up the monthly wage bill of the government to N4.4 billion, N200 million more than all the monthly takings of the state.

He said the new wage would castrate his government, hinder infrastructural development and make the tarring of a single kilometre of road a difficult task, proposing a salary increase of N13,500 for the least paid worker, instead of N18,000.

After a series of meetings and the intervention of religious and traditional rulers in the state, Governor Ajimobi approved the release of the new wage for the month of May only, while negotiation would continue.
http://tribune.com.ng/index.php/news/24101-minimum-wage-oyo-govt-labour-union-resume-negotiation-this-week

So in a nutshell, higher minimum wage => less miles of road build. So he will resist increasing this minimum wage as much as possible.

Ajimobi reduces the size of the civil service, Alao-Akala whining that Ajimobi is anti-worker:

This Ajimobi guy gets it. . . a bloated civil service means no development for a state.

Kudos to him!

Contrast this with Aregbesola, for whom one of his first acts was to create 20,000 fake jobs through this OYES program, and thus bloat the wage bill even further  sad

Anyway, time will tell with these new ACN governors, but I think Ajimobi and Fayemi are on the right path. Amosun and Aregbesola are question marks, though.

Abeg make we hear word. How about the lower the minum wage the higher the poverty which can lead to death. So roads are more important to human life.

I've never believed in the concept of minimum wage myself. In part because I don't see why decreasing the minimum wage implies higher poverty rates. In fact, my suspicion is that the opposite is true. . . no minimum wage or a low minimum wage leads to overall lower poverty rates. But I've not read enough public policy and economics literature to know definitively what the answer is.

Anyway, I don't think that is really relevant, in this case the problem is a bit simpler, since the money comes out of Oyo State's pocket. Ajimobi's obligation to Oyo State is clear: spend money as efficiently and frugally as possible. If he wants to build a mile of road, then he shouldn't unnecessarily pay more than he has to.

Same with a month of labor. Hence, better to pay N14k than N18k, if he can get the same amount of work.

I think you are missing the point here. how many people are under the employ of the State govt? it doesn't make sense, to me at least, to spend so much money on relatively small group of people, when such resources could be more usefully deployed to better to lives of a much larger number.

it doesn't have to be road alone; other capital projects that would impact the lives of the citizens should be embarked upon.

Re: Oyo Workers Reject N9,400 Minimum Wage by Nobody: 4:22pm On Jul 05, 2011
An easy way for state governments to implement the new minimum wage is to drastically RIGHTSIZE their bloated work forces. This should start from the commissioners to the special advisers and assistants all the way down to the civil service.

It is gross  fiscal indiscipline for a state's wage bill alone to exceed revenue derived in that state. When the total taxpayer revenue of a state is spent on less than 1% of their population, the people should be up in arms. Nigerians are too docile!

At the federal level, recurrent expenditure (salaries+overhead) is 114% of annual national revenue. No wonder we are not developing when money that is supposed to build and maintain infrastructure is consumed by a a parasitic minority called the public service.

I am sure the total number of senators and house of rep members are not up to what a local government employ, yet those very few legislators earn more than what a worker would take home in a month as mere sitting allowance.
9ja Wonder.
They would buy Eleganza Biro for N1k,drill a bore hole for 5m,buy 2007 Camry for 6m etc.

If the top does the right thing then they would surely not have any problem paying our dear worker N18k.

Downsize early on your adminstration. By year 3 and 4 when election time comes, everyone will have forgotten the harsh measures you took early on grin

Anyway, he should be more concerned about doing what is right for Oyo State rather than serving two terms. One brilliant 4 year term is better than 20 years of mediocrity

In the case of Bisi Akande, the strong foundation he laid by reducing the workforce was eroded when he was voted out and the chop I chop PDP was voted in

Now it has set the state back to where it was before Akandes restructuring

What Akande did was ask: that Why should we have 9 CRK teachers in a school and have 1 Maths teacher? It doesnt make sense He retrenched the redundant teachers and paid them their benefits but that was what led to his loss at the elections and set back the state.

I have seen worse: it is in Nigeria where you will see public contract to supply torchlight at N80k per torchlight, 32" LCD being contracted at N500k per unit and a desktop computer at N400k per unit. FCDA Abuja digs boreholes at N10 million per borehole. Such is the gross waste and brigandage in Nigeria!

ACN has learned their lessons from the ADs mistakes in 2003. So hopefully it will be less vulnerable to being wrongfully punished at the polls by foolish voters.

However, the media and folks like you and I have to play our part too by educating people on why certain policies might hurt in the short term, but helpsl in the long run. And in the case of cutting down bloated civil services, it doesn't even really hurt in the short term. After all, road construction requires workers as well.

I'd rather pay N18k to a construction worker breaking his back rather than some lazy and idle civil servant sitting down watching Africa Magic on DSTV all day.

@Ekt Bear

^^ How many of the electorates are that informed? The only thing they know is that This governor retrenched us.
And the other party would use that as a campaign gainst them

When Bisi Akande got into power, He found out that a bic biro was supplied for N220, Bisi Akande dramatically went outside the govt house and saw a woman selling the same biro for N10, Can celled the contractors deal and gave the roadside seller the contract to deliver at N20

In addition to his workforce reforms but the typical Nigerian electorates, Especially in Salary dependent states like Osun, Oyo etc Never saw the big picture.

In Oyo state after losing elections PDPs Alao Akala deliberately approved the minimum wage increase as a way to create problems for Ajimobi. Knowing that if Ajimobi dares reverses it, It would become a problem for the new administration

PDP is plain evil

In the US

Minimum wage in New York $1160 per month

The minimum wage in New York State is $7.25/Hour, with few exceptions.

http://www.labor.state.ny.us/workerprotection/laborstandards/workprot/minwage.shtm

Average monthly rent in New York is over $1500

it seems unusual that New York, a city notorious for expensive apartments, didn't make the cut, look to the methodology. In terms of average rent, New York is the most expensive at an average of $2,800 a month, according to the Office of Management and Budget. But the story changes when salaries are factored in - New Yorkers may be paying more but they are, relative to other parts of the country, making more, too.

Never mind other bills, Groceries, transportation etc.

There is a reason its called minimum wage

Minimum Wage is Not the Problem; MAXIMUM Wage is the Headache
Nigeria

Nigerian House of Representatives

The richest 20% of the population in Japan get less than four times more than what the poorest 20% get. In Singapore the richest 20% get about 10 times what the poorest 20% get. In Nigeria, a member of the House of Representatives gets 847 times as much as the ‘lucky’ man who gets N18,000 per month!

There seems to be one factor missing in the national equation that we are trying to solve. We have been discussing the minimum wage, but should we not also be fixing a maximum wage?

The minimum wage in Nigeria is N Zero, for the 20% of the population who are unemployed. However, let us deal with the N18, 000 per month that the states say that they cannot pay. A member of the House of Representatives is supposed to carry home N15,181,875.38 each month, according to Punch of June 19, 2011. This is 847 times the minimum wage!

Some research over the last few years has looked at inequality of income in some of the developed countries of the world. The research suggests that there is a close correlation between inequality of income and many of the social ills that plague us all. Some of the socio-economic problems that the researchers focused on are listed below:

1. Level of trust
2. Mental illness
3. Life expectancy and infant mortality
4. Children’s educational performance
5. Teenage pregnancy
6. Homicides
7. Overcrowded prisons

In countries where the gap is wider, the problems get worse. In a more equal society with less disparity between the richest and poorest citizens, these problems are much reduced.

Is there a day when you read a newspaper and do not find some of those problems tormenting us in Nigeria? The richest 20% of the population in Japan get less than four times more than what the poorest 20% get. In Singapore the richest 20% get about 10 times what the poorest 20% get. In Nigeria, a member of the House of Representatives gets 847 times as much as the ‘lucky’ man who gets N18,000 per month!

In the early 1940s, I worked in an Income Tax Office in the UK when there was a Super Tax. Any citizen who had an income higher than a certain cutoff point paid 19 shillings and 6 pence in tax on every pound of the excess income. Let us say the cutoff point was 100, 000 pounds per annum and our citizen got an income of 110,000 pounds. The tax man would take 9750 pounds out of that excess 10,000 pounds that our citizen had earned, in addition to the regular tax on the 100,000 pounds.

Perhaps we should consider some such arrangement in Nigeria. The present inequality of income and the problems it breeds should be at the top of everybody’s agenda.

well lets wait and see. Imagine a guy who promised the masses heaven on earth now negotiating for 9400. Meeehn, I was in naija in May, 9400 was about what I was spending on phone calls per week. Isn't that around 40/45Euros? Oh I feel the pain of the poor and helpless Nigerians.

Ajimobiii, I wanna give you some more time to see what you are really up to. For now I am very very skeptical.
