In February 2006, Florence Chukwu, an English teacher in Bauchi State seized the Koran of one of her students that was reading the Koran while the English class was in progress in order to ensure that the student concentrate during class. For this professional conduct, a Muslim Mob was incited against her. During the riot that ensued, Florence Chukwu was murdered as well as 20 other Christians.

On 21st of March, 2007, a Muslim mob murdered one Mrs Christiana Oluwatoyin, a female teacher in Government Secondary School, Gombe. HER CRIME? She touched a bag allegedly containing a Koran, eventhough, she did not know that the bag contained a Koran. However, even without asking her, she was declared by the Muslim mob to have desecrated the Koran. Hence, Mrs Christiana Olwatoyin was murdered in cold blood.

In July 2016, the wife of a Deeper Life pastor told a Muslim man praying right at the front of her shop to move away as he was obstructing her customers. It should be noted that the the pastor's wife had repeatedly told the said Muslim man not to pray at the the front of HER SHOP. However, for some strange reason, he persisted. On this particular day, the lady insisted that he should leave and for this, he accused her of blasphemy, incited a mob against her and murdered her.

There are countless instances where these senseless riots and violence had been incited in Northern Nigeria. Shall I reference the religious riots and killings that took place in the North Nigeria, simply because a white man in one of the Scandinavian countries drew a cartoon of the prophet or shall I talk about the religious riots and the death of more than 200 of fellow Nigerans because of an article written in This Day News Paper when Silver Bird wanted to host Miss World Beauty Pegeant in Abuja.

Eventhough, I strongly condemn derogatory statements and jokes against the prophet as every reasonable person should, may I note that the responses of my Muslim countrymen engaged in this barbaric riots and murders be condemned and opposed especially, when compared with the responses of their Christian countrymen.

For example, on 27th February, 2013, Nasir El-Rufai stated via Twitter thus: "If Jesus criticizes Jonathan's govt, Maku/ Abati/ Okupe will say he (Jesus) slept with Mary Madgalene" yet Christians kept the peace.

During Easter of 2021, the CEO of Serling Bank named Abubakar Suleiman compared Jesus Christ to our local Agege Bread thus: "AGEGE BREAD, HE ROSE". The Christians' response to his comparison was captured in the Punch News Paper thus: "AGREE BREAD ADVERT: YOUR SINS FORGIVEN, CAN TELLS STERLING BANK".

This write-up is for two purposes, firstly, to beseech my Muslim colleagues on this platform, especially those from the North to speak up and condemn these barbaric, inhuman and unlawful killings and riots. Especially, in your religious forums where such are taught and encouraged. For I strongly believe that if these killings are to be stopped, enlightened minds such as you are, must be at the fore front of the discuss. Your Muslim brothers would rather listen to you on this matter than listen to a Christian. We all owe the duty of peace, law and order to our beloved nation Nigeria. Atiku Abubakar (Former VP) condemned the killing via Twitter and facebook, but immediately some youth in Sokoto State declared that they will not vote for him for castigating their action, he deleted the post both on twitter and facebook unless you choose to believe his weak excuse. It should not be said that we turned our back to critical issues such as this for personal gains or politics.

Secondly, if the report that the riotting youth of Sokoto were able to breach the perimeters of the Sultan's palace, who condemned their action and as a result, the Sultan had to flee his palace in the company of security escort because of the violent youth.

I am of the opinion that a sitting Governor or a President maybe chased out of his state by these religious mobs if we do not nip these barbaric actions in the board.

How did we become such a lawless nation?

But then, are Islamic injunctions superior to the provisions of the constitution?

Far from it.

The court has overtime sentenced those court in the acts of death. A very learnt Islamic scholar, now the CJN, had this to say in a decided case.

Wait, am I first to comment on a post on a topic on Nairaland after 49 years on this forum? Omo...

..

back to topic...
.
first you have to understand that we have differing laws in this country...

there is law for the rich and law for the poor,
laws for general Nigerians and laws for select groups...

then there's Sharia...

all in this same conglomerate of lord Lugard.

if you go to a police station, they treat you according to your category, not according to the law.

Death period

All this Yoruba Muslims and moderation

When we allow insulting messages to fester in the community, they take on a life of their own. Look at Christianity they tolerated everything and see what's happening to them everywhere, especially in the US.

I pity the Nigeria Christian society, if we continue to be cowards and refuse to match these people violence for violence they will continue to assume monopoly to violence, if there has been retaliation from the south since Thursday I believe the docile FG would have done something.

These guys are animals and we must not remain in same country with them.

I don't think there is a section of the Nigerian constitution that precisely addresses Blasphemy.

But beyond the position of the law, I don't think it's okay to kill/die for religion. It's not worth it. Humanity first!

I'm so tired of this country, simple stuff like this that can easily be solved is what we are still having issues with, when will we now start thinking if advanced economy recovery, other countries are thinking about how to solve issues of climate change, we are still doing foolishness . You see them here fighting for their tribesmen to rule. This is not a northern thing, it's the whole country, no one is safe anywhere, I even thought killings are reducing in the north after reading about those how unknown gunmen killed akunyili and those two soldier couples and even more, and also how ritualists are now rampant in the south west, where two small boys can pin a lady down and remove her head. See if you can leave this country, better leave now. We leave around Animals in human skin. Our news is everywhere, we've spoilt our image.

Well, Nigeria is a secular state and as such I don’t think blasphemy is a punishable offense.

Generally anybody who says Islam is a religion of peace is just deluding his or herself.

Shame that in 21st century it's nearly law to have to "respect" a barbaric fairy tale from the 7th century.

When a muslim says that islam is a religion of peace just ask him what is the punishment for apostasy

Forget all this rubbish propaganda. The law in Nigeria is made to favour and protect Muslims only !! The law only works when persecuting Christians .. how many Muslims who kill Christians have you ever seen caught and jailed?!! We all saw the faces of Deborah's killers in the video show me on photo of them behind bars! Who is a fool!! This government favours protects and helps Muslims who kill us Christians.

We don't want to read any stupid article when the reality on ground is any Muslim who kills any of us goes free !

Which Muslim has ever been jailed for killing one of.us.. ordiany herdsmen who has raped killed and kidnapped countless Christians they have not ever persecuted even one

you can see his bigotry polished by western grammar in a failed bid to appear politically correct...

This does not change the facts that all muslims are potential terrorists and profet mohamed is a paedophile

this is the correct way to put it mildly

Even at that the so called sharia law that says death is the penalty for blasphemy against the prophet is not biding to Deborah Samuel, a non-muslim who might be ignorant of the law.

Her killers know that if her blasphemy is taken to the court of law (sharia law) she won't be sentenced to death and so they they hurriedly stone her to death..

I even fault the decision of the learned Justice of the SC. In the 21st, we have case laws proudly stating that people who commit blasphemy should face capital punishment? Like capital punishment?

In a country where Northerners are the biggest victims of poverty, illiteracy, unemployment, insecurity and they cannot fight the system, but keep leaving it to God? Now, same people are fighting for God? Have you seen the growing number of very young Northern males who wake as early as 7 in the morning to start begging for bread in Abuja and other states? These are the ones fighting blasphemy? Talk about misplaced priority.

What sort of country is this? It does not matter whether blasphemy is addressed by the mob or the law with capital sentence. The fact that such is addressed by capital sentence even by Shariah law is a major disaster. If many of these illiterates see that the law punishes it with capital sentence, they would feel justified to act on behalf of the law. Let that draconian and uncivilised law be repealed, that's if it ever exists as argued by many, because some scholars of Islamic law clearly said the Quran does not prescribe capital punishment for blasphemy.

Islam is a blood sucking religion. If they are not cutting of hands ,they are cutting off heads or bombing people to oblivion.

I still don't understand what is peaceful Islam. Can someone please tell me what is peaceful in honor killings, bombing and forceful child marriage? undecided undecided undecided undecided.

I came here thinking it was sane law ,the one meant for humans with brains ,you know the laws of the federal republic of Nigeria. Only to see nonsense archaic one made for brainwashed brainless people as far back as a thousand years ago by people who didn't even know any better. undecided

Abeg can sensible people come forward and tell us the position of the laws of the federal republic on this issue.

One keeps wondering why Southern Muslims and Christians live in peace and harmony, unlike the persecution of Christians in the North (by the way, I hear Northerns don't view Southern Muslims as real Muslims)...Well, I think the difference lies in the kind of spiritual/religious/political leadership they have up North...To put their followers under a tight leash, they had to manipulate the Holy Quran to achieve this. Not only did they use extreme poverty as weapon, they twisted the words in the Quran in such a way that their followers dare not question their authority while being oppressed, but instead, carry out their anger on those whose belief differ from theirs. A typical example was how those barbarians went berserk killing innocent Christian NYSC members in 2011 because Buhari lost an election. Naturally, most Northerners exhibit high level of religious intolerance whether you blasphem or not, they will cut you down when they feel like. That's why I say it takes some steel balls to practice Christianity up core North.

Unfortunately, the only changing factor, Western Education, which could change the narrative, as been tagged as harem by this leadership (the same education the elite spend millions on their wards to acquire). And has anyone noticed that these barbarian acts mostly happen in poverty stricken cities and countries. Where there is prosperity, people seldom care who says what, they caution, persecute lawfully and that's all.

That is why i keep saying people like Professor Ishaq Akintola, Director of MURIC should be watched very closely and checked down South; his teachings are too extreme.

The key to changing this mindset lies in the leaders up North, but I bet it can never happen for obvious reasons, hence, the need to divide the country. We are two different people; culturally, religiously, and politically. The least the entity called Nigeria needs right now, is Regional Governance. Make everybody dey hin dey for hin region; developing at its own pace and practicing whatever suit its people, without holding eachother down. And gradually, whoever wants to secede can do so peacefully without bloodshed. You can't be forcing a marriage and still be looking down and hurting those you want to remain in bed with.

My advice is that, it is high time liberal Muslims rise to caution their fellow Believers who are extremists and giving the religion a bad name. The supreme God I grow up to know needs nobody to fight for Him; He is an all sufficient God.

Honestly speaking the barbaric act of these individuals make one see light in the cravings of seperatists. The strange thing there is this same people do not want to be on their own to practice what they believe in. Naija matter tire everybody.

How do you live with savages, with people having no value for human life? We only find that in the wild, in jungles. To even think there are people who support the dastard act makes one cringe.

Can't believe I will say this, but indeed Nigeria be dismembered. Go to Calabar and Uyo and see how peaceful life is.
