Landslide Gulps 13 Buildings, Sacks 28 Families in Anambra

At least, 13 family homes and properties, worth millions of naira, have been swallowed up in a gorge measuring about three hundred metres deep and 300m wide, in Amachalla village, Awka, the Anambra State capital.

The lawmaker who was invited to the location by residents, was short of words when he saw the extent of damage. He fought back tears while consoling wailing mothers, toddlers and youth, whose homes and belongings were swept away by torrential rains, urged for calm, assuring them that “something urgent is going to be done by the state government.”

What Dhar hell  . .  i need to see the pics to believe this outrageous gully . . . This is what happens when ecological funds meant to tackle environmental issues are designated as one of  those cool stash of national cake to be devoured without trace and waring eyes  . . . A high population of Anambra citizens might just wake up one day to find out that they are X meters buried underground . . . The incessant gully is a devastating disaster waiting to happen  embarassed embarassed

The Igbo governors need to tackle this erosion problem before it is too late!

Erosion in Anambra, erosion in Ebonyi, erosion in Abia. I do not know if there is erosion in Imo or Enugu though.

Erosion is an ecological disaster that continues to plague Igboland.

His point is that for disasters of this sort, the FG should step in and help.

I don't necessarily agree, but it really isn't about Jonathan specifically.

I read somewhere that this erosion in Igboland can be traced to the days of the palm oil trade. Seems like that plant will continue to impact us, since is loosened our soil.

Right from the days of OBJ . .Serious Billions of naira have been voted as ecological disaster funds for the SE states . . .It appears they took it as their own . .  13 % derivation funds ala Niger Delta states  tongue . . They need to start probing where all those funds disappear into . . while those menacing gullies keep gaining territorial grounds  . .further compounding the problem

Meanwhile . .My Sunday was tight . .  safe from the menace of Poseidon current siege in Lagos  wink wink

brother, with the pictures i just saw on the internet and my stay in anambra, i can assume that the erosion has to do with the topography and the geographical location of the SE and not just anambra but also enugu abia and imo

found out that there are highlands in the cross river, benue areas and because of that the land in benue, cross river are hard

but when going down, the water is meet with lose clay soil of those state and the rushing water can easy eat up the soil slowly

and as u righly said, the palm oil plantation could also have loosen up the soil more

SOLUTION

i think sand and rock filling would be a cheap and effective way of going about it

what do u think

You may be right. I do not know, because I do not know much about soil topography or agriculture.

I have the proper response for this problem in SE but before I say it the human side of my nature wonders if there are any loss of lives.

So I ask, hope there is no life lost?

Maybe so. But I think in situations like this, it behooves us to take the high road. NL sh1ttalking is one thing, actual loss of life/homes/etc is another.
