Second lieutenant doesn't exist in the navy, that is the rank attainable by NDA graduates which they will hold for 6months only. And combatants Short service commission which they will hold for 18months. These are the current ranks for each external armed force.

The navy dssc starts from sub-lieutenant during training you are awarded allowances of #46,000 monthly but will be given only #20,000 the rest you will receive after training in one-installment to allow you travel to your first posting. You are also to be awarded a transit allowance of #1,200,000 but they may pay it in two installments. Special attention is given to medical doctors and legal officers by way of allowances and unless you receive an appointment or are sent on duty in a conflict zone you may receive only #170,000 as salary.

1.) OND will assume the rank of Corporal
2.) The armed forces - army, navy, airforce - ranks R divided into 2 cadres/categories. Commissioned Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers cadre. Non- Commissioned Officers in the army starts from Private and ends at Warrant officer 1. Commissioned Officers Cadre Starts at 2nd lieutenant and ends at general. OND can never attain the rank of lieutenant as that rank is not available in the Non commissioned officers cadre which OND qualifies U for. It is available in the Commissioned officers cadre which requires minimum of HND or BSc for entry.

The only way for an OND graduate to attain that rank is to have a degree and apply for DSSC - Direct Short Service Commission. Most folks join with OND then apply for DSSC after they have obtained their degree. However once U join with OND to move to the Commissioned officers cadre U will need to spend a minimum of 10yrs in the service and must have a bsc or hnd and approval from your commander. To obtain a Bsc or HND while in the service U must also have your commanders approval otherwise if U do get a degree without approval it will not be recognised by the military and U can't apply for DSSC. So if U join with OND, U will find it difficult to do DSSC. It is best to just get degree or HND and join DSSC direct or join with OND and maintain NCO cadre.

3.) Also NDA, Nigerian Defence Academy is a training ground for the armed forces. U will be trained there if U join with your OND and if U apply for DSSC. To be an NDA graduate, U must be 18 and below and have WAEC and will train there for 5 years. Other than that, U go there for your training.

Perform your duty well, be loyl to your superiors nd the nation. and above all be very close to God Mighty. These will take you to the top

1) The prism program in the usa has posed an intelligence threat worldwide and has shown the neglect the armed forces has with respect to ICT so your degree give you serious advantage as there is massive demand for ICT personnel in the armed forces . As time progresses, ICT personnel will be used in hosting training as well as become key-policy makers for a solid info security, for now I seeweb programming as well as ICT training as the options.

4) No, your senior is your senior. Except in the case of Godfatherism where a junior officer calls a senior officers to halt u with an order your junior is your junior whether DSSC or regular and must follow orders (is that clear).

5) Yes, regular's in some units (depending on availability ) are given special appointments locally e.g. OC PASS, CO, Base commanders etc. But since DDSSC are specialists they sometimes receive favour in specialised appointments both locally and internationallly e.g. Hospital and Military school commanders, foriegn missions, PAF ( Presidential air fleet) etc so it depends on available hands on deck with respect to training but it is to your advantage if your junior holds an appointment like CO or OC PASS because that means you get to boss him around if necessary.

6) REAR ADMIRAL, if you can maintain a clean record without buying Job, pass all promotion exams, and give them the standard where-ever you are. USually anybody DSSC or regular can be chief of army navy or air staff which is the highest attainable rank if you meet just one major condition. For airforce, you must be a pilot (whether DSSC or regular) and quota system and the political regime (The C-in-C) must favour you. Quota in the sense that they may decide that an igbo man must be chief of air staff and you are the only igbo trained pilot within the rank of air-commodore and above; that automatically makes you chief of airstaff. There is also age and years of service but that has been over-ruled by the C-in-c in many instances so it isn't a major factor. For navy you must be a naval pilot and be able to steer a vessel before you can reach the highest rank else rear admiral is your limit. Airforce If you aren't a pilot and age and politics is on your side, AVM -air vice marshal is your last bustop. Army, Lieutenant General is the highest that is chief of army staff, but you will most likely be a regular or in the infantry or armoury division else major-general is your highest.

7) YES, Commodore and above

As we speak, DSSC officers are in maiduguri and jos and Niger delta along side regulars fighting insurgency. DSSC don't need to convert that's why they are called Direct short service only short service convert to regular commission else they are pushed out of the service......

SSC is a Combatant Short Service Commission (formerly known as Short Regular Commission, SRC) that is meant for those interested in field Operations AKA War or peace-keeping or Combat Operations (U assume the rank of second Lieutenant in the army -*- and R usually fielded into fielded into Infantry Corps of the Nigerian army after 9mths - 12mths of training); after 18mths - 2yrs U receive your first promotion to Lieutenant -**- and your subsequent promotions are 4years a rank or as vacancies/slots arise. When U achieve your 6th Year (Usually when U R or awaiting to assume the rank of Captain -***-), U will have the option to retire or convert to Regular commission after a physical exercise; U will receive 2 chances each year to pass this after which at your third fail U will go on compulsory retirement. N.B;- NDA graduates R on Regular Commission by default; This grants them automatic right to hold any appointment anywhere in the armed forces; a right SSC may share if God, age and politics is on your side.

Looking at how many ranks you have to jump to achieve this, not counting courses U would have to do Junoir div, senior div, professional corps courses!! Haba!! It will cause unnecessary rancour; no one will want that. Even if a service Chief did that, the next incoming chief will reverse it (Don't believe me, ask Nuhu ribadu who jumped just one rank what happened to him later)

That kind of jump can only happened from Colonel Upwards (where U can be considered for promotion just after 6mths or 9mths or a year on a rank) below that rank; it is usually impossible for such a jump to happen...........

Navy does not commission officers through short service. You have to apply through DSSC only if they list your course of study on the particular year's requirement. When successfully commissioned, you will resume at the rank of a sub-Lieutenant

your dream is possible but you have to understand the difference between army DSSC and SSC. You may have to read previous posts on this topic.
In summary, commissioning through DSSC gives you the rank of a Lieutenant immediately after training, but it requires your course of study to be something valuable to the army like; medicine, engineering, law etc also depending on the areas the army needs personnel. So sociology is not of much concern to the Nigerian army. That now leads you to what you should actually do to achieve your dreams.

You will enrol for SSC which does not care about your course of study, just that the course must not be less than 4 years if you studied in Nigeria. And after training you resume at rank 2nd Lieutenant and start commanding troops starting from a platoon (16-44 soldiers). You can then get to your dream rank of major general where you can command a division (7,000 - 22,000 soldiers)

Even if the army advertises for sociology tomorrow, if you apply you won't be involved in warfare at all and that's going make it hard for you to attain that General because gallant war men will first be considered.

of course you will be a war man. And only war o, nothing else. So that's the same thing I'm saying. Before you can be in infantry, you must commission through ssc and then start fighting any war that comes up. After about 20-25 years, your generalship dream will come through

This is very possible!! But your road is very rough and it takes a disciplined person to get there!! Your only possible hope is to apply for Short Service Commission, SSC - which fits the career path I see here - but it means that you will train for 9mths - 1year!! It also means that you will have to have age on your side (your chances are greater if as at the time of comissioning you are under 30yrs)!!

You stand a chance in any of the arms of the Nigerian Military!! If U haven't considered a different career line as at the time of writing this post, I will advise you give it a try!! If you are going to try the Nigerian army and are under 30 and are very fit and healthy and not flat footed; then I suggest U pick up the SSC form of the Nigerian army!

Otherwise, pick up the DSSC form of any or all of the 3 armed forces!! When you pick up the form; target the education core!

Your degree will be deemed an asset in any training command of either army, navy, airforce or the General Armed forces colleges!!
