First time I saw the word "Naija" was in newspaper cartoon in the late 80's. Initially I thought it was a Typo. Am guessing it probably wasn't. We like it. Dora, eat your heart out!

I was told it started with youths who like to coin short references for their hippy communications. From Nige it translated into Naija(even some find ways to make it short by writing it as 9ja) that is closer to the word Nigeria by enuciation.

I think it might still evolve into shorter word with time - maybe,"9j".

What are you going on about? The question was the origin of the nickname 'Naija' not Niger.

I dont know who started naija, But am the first to use it typo as 9ja, yep 1989
