Jonathan Approves Arms for Civil Defense Personnel
Abdulkadir Badsha Mukhtar
3 August 2011

President Goodluck Jonathan has given approval to men and officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps to carry arms, Interior Minister Comrade Abba Moro disclosed yesterday.

The minister announced the president's approval yesterday while on a familiarity visit to both the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corp (NSCDC) and the Federal Fire Service headquarters in Abuja.

Addressing the elated crowd of officers and men of Civil Defense Corps, the minister said, "the Federal Government and Mr. President has approved that you carry arms."

The minister, who did not disclose specifically when the Corps will start carrying arms, stated that the approval was in consideration of the danger which the Corps members are exposed to and the risks they take in tackling issues that have to do with national security.

In his speech, the NSCDC Commandant General, Professor Ade Abolurin, said the first batch of 500 personnel of the Corps, who will form the nucleus of the Civil Defense Armed Squad, are undergoing three-month intensive training in arms and weapon handling at the Prison Armed Squad College, Owerri, in Imo State.

He said another 200 senior officers and 400 junior officers which include drivers and orderlies have commenced lights arms (pistol) handling in Prison Staff College and Training School, Kaduna.

While at Nigerian Fire Service, the minister also promised to enhance the service in every possible way for an efficient and effective discharge of its responsibilities.

He said in the "next three weeks" the committee for restructuring the Nigerian Fire Service will be inaugurated, adding that the service everywhere across the world is seen as "part of our lives" as means for providing enabling environment.

I pray that this is the first signal of the dismantling of our useless police force and rebalancing of federal character representation in the military.

Citizens of Nigeria are allowed to own pistols, right? Or is their government like Communist China and nanny state Britain?

Police go oppress these people die.

With Presidential priviledge, the policeman born of woman that will oppress the civil defence corps has not yet been born.
My prayer is that these guys form the nucleus of a brand new police force, we are sick and tired of "roger" mentality.

And in nanny state Britain, police are still very efficient than US. I always wonder the day this brainwashed Americans will think straight. Weapons causes more confusion in a community . We will be seeing more innocent killings by all this forces just like America soon

@ topic

Is this backed by law? Can the president just order the Civil Defence Corp to carry arms when its establishment Act does not allow for such? It was like when the IG of police "ordered" Nigerians not to use tinted glasses on their cars! Who is is the IG to tell Nigerians what to do if their actions are not prohibited by law? Our psyche is still suffering from military hangover

There cannot be freedom or security unless citizens are allowed to carry guns.
Re: Civil Defence Corps Can Now Carry Weapons - FG by oyemekun: 5:08am On Aug 04, 2011
The idea is good but the civil defence officers should be trained on how to be armed discipline also the problems of the federal fire service should be looked into, the commitee to be set up should address the age long problems critically because FED FIR SERVICE headed by non-professional and that has been the root cause of their problems.

they should give them serious mental evaluation before handing over the guns to them
and they should be given pistols ONLY.
don't understand why police 'll be carrying weapons made primarily for the war front
Re: Civil Defence Corps Can Now Carry Weapons - FG by Nobody: 9:32am On Aug 04, 2011
Carrying arms do not enhance security.security is intelligent work.civil defence corps will be exposed to dangers.u are likely to get killed if u carry arms.
Re: Civil Defence Corps Can Now Carry Weapons - FG by hakanai(m): 10:05am On Aug 04, 2011
Personally i think they could take off doing fine. With a few mistakes and naija wonder they too can turn into the Police in attitude.Without the weapons they lack respect in terms of security enforcement.
I was thinking on the NSCDC coming up with there own training and learning from outside the nation to create there own unique mentality. They were trained by the Nigerian military and now thought how to shout by the prison warders who are not half the police in arms handling.I would rather they get training from the SSS and some foreign nation security experts on national security.so they adapt it to the Nigerian climate.
@beaf you need to see there dogs. They are so pure breeds, the Nigerian police dog stand out definitely as local breeds.they could do more.I hate to see them being training by any Nigerian out fit.Due to there infectious nature. It is high time they match fire for fire. Not call the police for support always. The stakes are higher now. They also need helicopters for aerial surveillance of public infrastructures.
Beaf, could you also ask GEJ how far with the police now.We go leave them like that?while they pay them to fail us. angry angry angry maybe they need heating them up.for me it is pointless having numbers that lack professionalism. Why have a large number of personal with little intelligence.have you notice how the army resolves conflicts and security issues with almost same force as the police? Why so?Simple the police is not efficient. They out number the army in numbers and also get far more in terms of spending. It is better FG cut its number and focus on expert training.Ordinarily the police should be better than the Army in handling internal security challenges. Not in Naija sha!!!

This is the most stooopid thing i've heard all day. And people here are actually in support of this? Have we not learnt our lessons yet?

Even the better trained (and likely better paid) police corps are a menace on the roads thanks to their weaponry. Now you want to arm the folks and set them loose on the general public?

Utterly brainless move.

Lol  - We have a country where everything concerning the government has failed  - Yet the government wants to arm another failed institution  rather than tackle the underlying issues.  How many more road blocks are we going to have on the roads because of the brainless move.

I only hope they wont be overzealous and misbehave!

They need to be wholly trained in professionalism, if not so they will just be another lastma officials with guns!
Re: Civil Defence Corps Can Now Carry Weapons - FG by nigerhead(m): 11:08am On Aug 04, 2011
Psychiatric test should be mandatory for all of them, the Civil Defense Corps have (I think) to a large extent carried out their duties with integrity. But I have also witnessed some of them being over-zealous in carrying out their duties; and this is with just horse whips. Now they are giving them guns, next thing we will hear that Police and Civil defense are fighting at Oju-Elegba.

I dont want to be pessimistic, they should just be careful about this action. WE already have too many crazy people in uniforms carrying weapons on our streets.
Re: Civil Defence Corps Can Now Carry Weapons - FG by trustidkid: 11:18am On Aug 04, 2011
it is a good thing if the aim of the government is to strengthening the security of its citizen. But, government should also think of about a through training on the use of these weapons because of the past experience on extra judicial killings. This is very important area that must be dealt with. Otherwise, is does not worth doing.

Even Man 'o' War go batshit crazy when they are given whips and the tacit authority to flog people they think they can get away with flogging.

Now you want to arm these poorly trained folk with live weapons. Does that make any sense at all?

It's a Nigerian thing. When you make a man stand in the hot sun while he watches his mates zoom past him in expensive cars, homicidal rage starts building up.

Our useless FG would soon approve ARMOURED TANKS for youth CORPERS, why is it that since that idiotic GEJ entered the corridors of power it has been chaos all through?, all the fool has done is approve anything tabled before him so far it does'nt affect his family, he has brought nothing but bad luck to nigeria, angry angry angry
Re: Civil Defence Corps Can Now Carry Weapons - FG by realwale: 12:01pm On Aug 04, 2011
d nigerian police have become a tyrant institution, now u want to arm some bunch of semi illiterates to harrass d so called CIVILIAN. accidental discharge will become a daily occurrence even inside molue. most of these guys will be come overzealous ands start settling personal scores even in their local community. we have d same problem wit the police officers using guns to settle personal differences.
i dont support this idea, let them be assisted by the military in carrying out their operations

The nursing mother shot by a Police office over a mild dispute with a taxi driver, was she up to no good too?
The Igbo traders and their girlfriend that were shot by the Police, were they up to no good?
The Schlumberger staff that slumped and died after being sprayed (in front of his daughter) with teargas by cops in Rivers state, was he up to no good too?

Perhaps you'd say the people of Odi were up to no good too.
