There is a major fraud going on at National Open University of Nigeria , the students are made to pay for text books compulsorily when registering for new Semester. Their Registeration is done online and process of paying for textbooks is automated in such away that you can not register for courses without first paying for your text books. This is actually not a problem, but from what I learnt from a lady who is studying Child Education in the school, these books are never made available to the students.

According to report, an average student offers 8 to 10 course per semster but he or shy may end up having only one textbook or nothing before examinations start. These students have to start looking for old students who may have these textbooks in order to make photocopies. A typical department in NOUN has thousands of students in each level and each textbook in this lady's department goes for N2000 .

On making enquiries from the school officials, they said government have already appointed contractors for supplying these textbooks but they have not been able to deliver and the school has to move on. In all fairness, I can not tell if these contractors get paid when they fail to deliver but why should the institution keep collecting money from students when they know that the books will not be delivered. How came they do not refund the students with cost of books not delivered to them. Why are they not allowing the students to go and buy recommended books like is done elsewhere, insteadof creating this patronage system that is not working.
