In a much applauded move, the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has allotted a budget of $220,000 (N34.1 million) for an ambitious 11 gold medals at next year’s Olympic Games in London, England.

President of the NOC, Sani Ndanusa, revealed in that, more than ever before, the NOC, which has the primary responsibility of leading the Nigerian contingent to the Olympic Games, is determined to ensure that the country records her best ever performance in the Olympics at the London Games.

It was revealed that 11 athletes selected from four different sports, where Nigeria will be competing for medals at the London Olympics, will receive the sum of $4000 (N620, 000) each every three months. With just 15 months to the Games, each of the 11 identified athletes would be having $20, 000 (N3.1 million) from the arrangement.

‘The initiative is part of the Elite Athletes Programme. The elite athletes are athletes with the biggest medal winning potential at competitions like the Olympic Games. Together with the sports commission, the NOC has selected 11 of these athletes as beneficiaries of training grant of $4,000 per quarter until the Olympic Games. We started giving out the money last month (July), and we are going to be doing that every three months,” Ndanusa explained.

The NOC boss refused to name the lucky athletes, but disclosed that the athletes were drawn from four sports, namely athletics, weightlifting, canoeing and taekwando.
