The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has picked holes in the claim by the Kwara State Government that crude oil has been discovered in one of the villages in the state.

The corporation said it was funny for the state government to have come out publicly to make such pronouncement when the Department of Petroleum Resources that should verify such a claim was yet to be contacted.

Speaking with our correspondent on the telephone on Friday, a source at the Public Affairs unit of the corporation said it was not the duty of government officials or individuals to make pronouncements on oil discovery when no sample had been analysed.

Group Managing Director of NNPC, Mr. Austen Oniwon

The source said, “Even if oil was actually discovered there it is not their duty to go public with such information. It is the DPR that should be contacted and then experts will be sent there to analyse the soil sample.”

Last week, the Kwara State Government announced that crude oil had been discovered in Aran Orin town in Irepodun Local Government Area of the state by a farmer.

In a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Dr. Muyideen Akorede, the state Governor, Mr. Abdulfatah Ahmed, said the farmer discovered crude oil on his farm and seven other adjoining sites and subsequently alerted the state government.

He said geologists from the State Ministry of Industry and Solid Minerals were directed to confirm whether the substance was indeed crude oil, and if so identify the blend, which they later confirmed to be Bonny Light, the highly sought after blend by refiners.

As at Thursday, the state government had commenced the process of ascertaining the quantity of the deposit even when experts from DPR were yet to confirm the substance to be crude oil.

The state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Tunji Moronfoye, said on Thursday that the government had contacted the DPR of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources to carry out the processes to determine if the discovery was of commercial quantity.

Is NNPC faulting the claims because DPR have not affirmed the claims or they went there and did not find oil as claimed, they should be more specific

If the initial is the case then i think this guy is clueless cry

DPR shld prove d claims wrong first, then faulting will be justified.

But wetin be bros Oniwon beef sef wey him dey vex, na blessin to them if its true. Akwa-ibom receives N53B naira while kwara a mere N9B bc of oyel deriavation. So who no go happy?

My friend, keep quiet if you do not have info about something. Do you know what 10,000m is?!! That is over 30,000ft! The deepest well recorded is under 35,000ft!! There are places where reservoirs are at surface and average wells in the middle east are about 2000ft (i.e. 700m),

Oil can be discovered just like that.
Nigerians like to pass comments on something they know nothing about.
Oil is normally found in reasonable depths so only deep drilling can actually strike oil.
Probably some deposits of bitumenous substance was discov

Geologists on Wednesday demanded for a probe of the claims of oil discovery "without an exploration" by Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara state stating that the manner such claims were made could cause embarrassment for Nigeria in the international community.
The earth scientists made this known at the annual technical meeting of the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE) in Lagos.
Governor Ahmed had while hosting management of National Mirror in Ilorin said that the state did not only confirm the discovery of crude oil in Ara Orin in Irepodun Local Government Area of the state but also identified the blend as Bonny Light, "a high-grade of crude oil preferred by European and American refineries due to its unique properties," a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications, to the governor, Dr Muyideen Akorede said.
But renowned geologists Biodun Adesanya told Daily Independent that it might take a supernatural science to discover Bonny Light in such a speed and circumstances.
Adesanya's view was adopted by Gilbert Odior, a fellow of NAPE and all discussants at the technical meeting.
Odior specifically tasked the government to set up an investigation panel of geologists from the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) and NAPE to examine the claim.
"My position is simple," Adesanya said, stating that this "thing has to be investigated properly. There is a standard procedure for evaluating and coming up with information that oil has been found."
Certain processes, according to Adesanya, "have to be taken into consideration. You cannot arbitrarily claim that you have found oil and you have tested it and that it is Bonny Light when you did not have a rig, when you do not drill. At least, you do not have record of that. In fact it requires some further investigation and clarifications."
Governor Ahmed had said the discovery was first highlighted by a farmer who discovered crude oil sprouting from his farm and seven other adjoining sites and alerted the state government.
The discovery, according to the governor came as the state identified solid minerals development and mining as key sources of internally generated revenue to fund development programmes.
Providing further clarification, he said geologists from the state Ministry of Industry and Solid Minerals were subsequently directed to confirm whether the substance was indeed crude oil and if so, identify the blend.
Governor Ahmed said the find was subsequently verified through independent analysis by a private oil company which also confirmed the government's findings.

Don't mind them. What will it cost them to go to kwara and conduct all the necessary tests that will either affirm or refute this claim.

We love pulling rank too much in Nigeria. NNPC should not be this loud about their disapproval, instead they should go and check out the claim, cos it just might be genuine.

Probably crude from a leaking underground trunk line! If so, that would be very embarrassing for the Kwara Govt. But let's watch and see. There can only be two possible outcomes - Oil or No oil!

Cheers cool
