ABUJA—A Member of the House of Representatives, Mr Robinson Uwak, yesterday asked the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in the educational sector as mass failure in numeracy and literacy in the last 11 years had become a threat to achieving the ideals of Vision 20:2020.

Rep Uwak, who represents Oron/Mbo/Okobo/Udung/Uko/Urue in Akwa Ibom State, said “the consistent failure of students in the final qualifying examinations showed that the future of the country was in trouble.

“A major reason this should be seen as a state of emergency was that as a country, we have set the goal of being among the 20 industrialized nations by year 2020, as we cannot desire this when our children are failing in numeracy (Mathematics) and literacy (English) examinations?

Uwak, however, blamed the Federal Government for not properly funding the sector, saying “between 1985 and 2005, on the average, the budgetary allocation in Nigeria was on the decline and in some cases, we spent less than 10 percent of the national budget on education as opposed to the UNESCO recommended 26 percent.

“So,  years of neglect in this sector have led to a serious decline in the quality of our students and today, we are not only facing unemployment, we are also seeing a problem of youths being unemployable (a case where graduates are not fit for employment because they cannot prove their education).

“Take, for instance, the recent case of about 80percent failure for applicants in the NNPC recruitment test where those claiming to have a 2.1 certificate scored less than 20percent, this further confirms the lack of functionality in our education, quoting the Group Managing Director of the Corporation.”

Uwak suggested that “to solve this problem, we need to do more than create policies as it must be tackled head-on by both the executive and legislature, many experts and organisations have proffered solutions to manage the crisis.

“Some include adequate funding, massive investment in infrastructure, promotion of child-friendly and teacher-friendly school environment, revival of Parents Teachers Associations and empowerment approach to education.”

It would be recalled that last week, when the Minister of State on Education, Mr Nyesson Wike, visited Speaker of the House, Waziri Tambuwal, the speaker  promised to help fast-track all education related bills in a bid to checkmate the deplorable state of the sector in the country.

It is high time the focus on this sector and hell yes, it actually takes more than just declaring a state of emergency. There are a thousand and more actions that is needed to be taken in other to solve this problem. it would not be out of place for nairaland to even contribute to the solution of this malaise in one way or the other.

Nigeria reps, govt, ppl, media all bunch of toothless barking bull dogs. All barks and no bites.
Is there any sector in Nigeria that is not in SOE? Name it; education, power, road, aviation, military, curruption(now a sector), even the govt is in a SOE.
What the middle easterners are shedding blood for is not up to one-tenth of what an average Nigerian goes tru on a daily bases, yet some overfed semi-thug comes up with sympathy winnin yarn cos he's on air while they take home mind bogglin sums daily.
Make dem wait, kidnappin neva start, na wen una senate presido or rep leader miss, na him dem go serious put 9ja case. De idiot wey dey talk, wich sch im pikin dem dey go? Ofcourse one janded name sch; hw he wan take kw wetin dey happen for normal/public schs?
De only solution still remains to enact/enforce a law dat political office holders MUST use govt utilities; sch, water, power, transport etc as a prerequisite to even be eligible.

Declaring state of emergency will not solve the problem.Nigeria's education system is very poor.If our leaders fails to tackle the problem now,I'm afraid our future as students hangs on the balance.

The rot is a s a result of years of neglect and decadence which has been allowed to go on in the system. In tandem with this is , the lack of basic infrastructure required to create a conducive learning environment in the sector.

May God help us and God bless Nigeria

BTW, I am really appalled at the level of SMS/text speak on this domain?, Maybe we could start by limiting the 'propensity' to use SMS/text speak to certain media such our our BBs? undecided undecided undecided undecided undecided undecided undecided

P.S- I was requested to help an undergrad write a 'review' for his CV and to my surprise , 60% of the information contained in the CV was written in SMS language(i.e. schools as skools, computer and komputa cool cool cool cool cool cool cool cool )

Pass or fail same thing, after all we still need chinco to train us after receiving the university education how to push the button in energy plant.

Now, let them reduce grading system for example 10/100 = credit, then all will pass.

when most of our profs are dumb, what did you expect to get from them?
