Nigeria has had a dramatic shift in thinking with regard to hosting the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations finals.
Libya is currently due to host the finals but its ability to do so has been cast into serious doubt because of the ongoing conflict there.
On Thursday, 2017 hosts South Africa announced that they had agreed to swap Nations Cup tournaments with Libya.
Nigeria initially backed the idea before making a U-turn on Friday as it claimed its 'rights as stand-by hosts'.

"The board of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) wish South Africa all the best," NFF spokesman Ademola Olajire had told BBC Sport on Thursday.

"The decision between both countries must be applauded and respected by all."
However, in a statement released on Friday, the NFF revealed that it has written to the Confederation of African Football (Caf) to remind the body of the decision it took in 2006.

Due to announce the hosts of the 2010 finals from a shortlist of five countries, Angola won the 2010 finals, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon 2012, Libya 2014 - while Nigeria were officially put on stand-by.

This was in the event that any of the original hosts were unable to stage the finals.

"However, the reality of the situation on the ground in Libya means that they can not possible play host to a football tournament the magnitude and importance of the Africa Cup of Nations," the NFF said in a statement.

"We are aware of this fact, aware of the resolution of 6 September 2006, and are prepared to exercise our rights as standby hosts for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

"We would like [Caf] to call to order the football association of Libya, and make them realize that it is not in their hands to decide who to bequeath hosting rights of the Africa Cup of Nations.

"It is the prerogative of CAF, and since we have not indicated anything to the contrary, we reserve the right to step in and start making preparations to host a successful competition in 2013."

For its part, Caf has said it will not make any decision on Libya's ability to host the 2013 finals, nor any potential replacement, until late September.

Did you read the story at all or you just saw the topic and decided to pos t.
South Africa and Libya have decided to swap but it is not Libya's decision to choose who to replace them, CAF reserves this right.

Nigeria was chosen as stand-by host in 2006 for 2010,2012 and 2014 (now 2013) tournaments in case any of the original hosts fails. CAF now have to step in make a decision.

Nigerian foreign policy has gone to pieces
We recognise the new Libyan rebel govt, SA does not
Libya swaps places with SA

We don't want to lose face, so we now antagonise SA needlessly for the 2nd time in a week!

After what Nigeria did before hosting the U17 World cup, when we thought of dropping the idea of hosting the tournament months before the kick off which got both Sepp Blatter and Hayatou running here and there looking for ways to assist us in hosting to global cup am sorry they should forget it.

First your goverment recognised the rebel as a legitimate goverment(I wonder how will you feel if South Africa recognise Boko Haram or MEND).Now you're blocking the arrangement we made with Libya for the hosting of AFCON 2013.

South Africa once again was trying to help Libyan people, after this civil war they will need to rebuild the country both its infrustructure and its people's unity and that project was going to start now till 2017.
What happened to big brother Africa,I thought Nigeria was a bigger brother.

You're only trying to make use of your white elephants stadiums that were used for world Cup. Everybody knows that, so it's a mutual benefit thing.
You are going to get to use the stadiums laying fallow so that they don't grow into forests

I can't belief you're buying that useless BBC report on our stadiums being white elephants.
All our Stadiums are used by both Soccer and Rugby clubs, and they're all in good conditions.
Most of this Stadiums are not run by goverment they were leased to private companies.
Each venue is a business and it is run to make profit.

Football is not even a number one sport in South Africa,we are a sporting nation, with a wide range of sporting codes that we excel at.Those stadiums where not build only for football but all kind of sports like rugby, cricket ,athletics and football.

We are hosting the 2017 AFCON anyway,by swaping with Libya was just a good gesture that we extended to the Libyan people. If Nigeria take over the hosting ,Libya might not host this in a long time, and as I have mentioned earliar Libyans need the 2017 more than anyone else for the above obvious reasons.

^ @RSA

Do you just sneek around this forum ready to promote your beloved country to us Nigerians.

If SA is not a footballing nation then why would it be financially sound to host these events there, regardless of quality of stadiums

There are under 500,00 Nigerians in SA and another smaller handfull of other Africans(excluding Zims). Who is going to watch the games

"Foreigners" who fly in from Europe or locals who could care less about the event if "orlando pirates" aint playing

Haha!. I laugh in Zulu

Football is not the major sport in USA but they gave them the World Cup in 1994, Australia is bidding but football their major sport, In reality SA are more equip to host the world after they recently hosted the confedereation and world cup, yes the British media tried their utmost best to get FIFA to shift the world cup to Europe, probably England. Nigeria on the other hand, Nigeria has hosted both U17 and U21 world and it was filled with a catelogue of problems like a playing North Korean national anthem to the South Korean team, or the light going the Ghana vs Brazil game in Ibadan or Buying out dated filming cameras despite FIFA recommending the host committee the exact specification or brand of camera to get or the late Yar'adua telling Sepp Blatter months before the kick-off that Nigeria cant host the tournament due to lack of funds, Over 70 official cars, buses and ambulanes vanished before the final whistle was blown in 2009,

We should forget about it!!!!!!!!!
