Dont really know where this fits in , culture or religion

As the title say really, I have always wonder why some people are buried so late, I know in some cases, the cause of death needs to be investigated especially in the west

two recent examples in, Christy Essien-Igbokwe (may her soul rest in peace) she died June 30 and will be buried September 9th

Sam Loco Efe- Died 7 August and will be buried October 21

Sorry I'm just using these as they are well known.

Is it the preparation for the casket or getting family and friends together to fit in to the family plans?

Why the delay

and what is the condolence book for?

Death, too abominable to discuss?
Re: Why Are People Buried Late After Death? by ezeagu(m): 2:20am On Sep 01, 2011
Another problem Western interference caused. People used to be buried within two days. The extended burial and even how the burials are done nowadays have absolutely nothing to do with any culture indigenous to Nigeria.

For the most part, burials are delayed because of financial planning, logistics or a combination of both. When my pops died, we had to wait two months to bury him because all of us (the children) were in school and our mum didn't want us to miss classes/exams. When my grandma died many years ago, the funeral was delayed 3 months to allow everybody to gather financial resources for a befitting funeral extravaganza. BTW, I am from the Yoruba culture.

Well, people wait longer now to bury their dead which is alien to African as a whole.

Islamically, Muslims are to bury their dead ASAP, if someone dies in the morning, should be bury in the afternoon, that is the injuction of Allah. The only duty you own a dead person is to bury him/her ASAP and am sure everyone knows that about Islam.

Western interference never dictated waiting three months after someone's death to bury them. Neither does Western influence reach to the after-funeral owambe and souvenirs. If anything it goes to show Africans tendency to over-exaggerate another culture's style.

Which of the Western folks cos I know these guys bury their dead as soon as they are dead. While in some cases,it has to do with financial obligations,in most cases, the money in question is not for the burial casket or anything but for feeling among that you celebrated the person in question's death very well. As religious as we are we still don't get it that dead folks are jutthat, dead folks. Plus all the protocol needed to collect permission from ur village Elders to bury your dead person. STEWPID!!!!

Man, this cnt be generalised! For the christians, dey wait for some days even weeks sef before they bury the person cos of some ceremonial functions e.t.c. But for the muslims, its immediately the person dies,it wnt even take up to an hour before he is buried, each religion has is own way of doing its things.

I wonder how many people have been mistakenly buried alive.
Re: Why Are People Buried Late After Death? by BigMeat2: 12:31pm On Sep 01, 2011
I think it has nothing to do with either christianity or western culture.
Most people from the southern part of nigeria delay burial due to financial constraint.
In the West, once the dead has been certified, burial is done without delay.

But do you have to wait 3 months to know that grandma is really dead?
Re: Why Are People Buried Late After Death? by hajifaty: 1:57pm On Sep 01, 2011
waiting for 1 or 2 days is enough becos we all know that strange things are happening in our present world. The death could get up again and become a living human. We have heard of pple proclaimed to be dead but they eventually get up and continue living. Something like this recently happened in a S/Africa mortuary.
But i really don't like the delaying of burial activities becos of extravagance party.
Re: Why Are People Buried Late After Death? by dustydee: 2:00pm On Sep 01, 2011
It really leads to a waste of funds on the dead. The maximum should be 3 days or until the children or relative arrive for burial.

Re: Why Are People Buried Late After Death? by pssword: 2:20pm On Sep 01, 2011
I think this has to do with having a befitting burial. To celebrate the life of the lost one and to give all the family and friends an opportunity to say goodbye. Especially if the lost one was an important person etc, an anyhow funeral looks bad on the family. As suggested previously, this involves planning, invitations, financials, organisations, catering, in some cases party etc. I'm not sure if this is uniquely African or Nigerian - but it's certainly quite common.
Re: Why Are People Buried Late After Death? by hajifaty: 2:24pm On Sep 01, 2011
The best way to say goodbye is by praying for the lost one and take good care of  anything he/ she left behind. Some pple even go to extent of taking loan to celebrate the death of their lost ones.

waste of prayer once a man is dead prayer has nothing to do with them

hajifaty:

you are very right sadly though after the party those left behind even if they are young kids are on their own.

@OP As you stated, sometimes there are extenuating circumstances as to why it takes

longer for a body to be interred. I've known people to be buried on the same day of

their deaths; I've also known it to take a week, sometime two weeks. It is what it is.

If you have a personal situation perhaps you should pass on more information so we

may discuss your particular set of circumstances.

I just want to know why the long delay, and everything seems to point to extravagant celebrations

financial constraint cant be a good reason, it far cheaper and less dramatic to bury a dead person within days than keep them stored, shopping for latest casket, organising music band to 'escort' the dead
Re: Why Are People Buried Late After Death? by brianon: 4:53pm On Sep 02, 2011
I wonder the same, but I have also wondered how they make arrangements and complete a burial so quickly in other cases. In the times where it takes a while for people to be buried, perhaps it has to do with wanting to extend their memory a little longer by being able to report their burial a while after they have died.
Re: Why Are People Buried Late After Death? by Azxlikedat: 6:05pm On Sep 02, 2011
It is not permissable for muslims to delay the burial in order for the maximum number of relatives to see the deceased, as is common practice among other communities. Once death is evident, the body should be prepared and taken out of the house for prayer and burial as soon as possible. In this way, contact with the dead body is minimized, which keeps the grief and hurt of seeing the dead down to a minimum. Abu Hurayrah related that the Prophet  May Allah's peace and blessings be upon him said "Hasten the funeral rites"
