Football Transfer Deadline Day Saga: English Premier League by JohnDoe77(m): 9:29am On Sep 01, 2011
[b]The 11pm deadline for conclusion of transfers in the European football has come and gone but needless to say, it was one of the most highly anticipated in recent years. Different teams waited for the deadline day albeit for the fact that most teams are usually desperate for money hence, transfer deals move quicker and are ultimately cheaper.
Several teams engaged in this transfer day madness and reinforced their teams while others just watched from the sidelines.
Manchester United had nothing to do on transfer deadline day having already concluded their transfer dealings over a month ago.

Liverpool made a lot of new additions in the just concluded window with players such as, Henderson, Downing, Charlie Adam, Andy Carroll etc but they felt they hadn't finished and went into the market for one last time. They came out with Craig Bellamy on deadline day. Good addition it is indeed.

Manchester City surprised everyone with the addition of injury plagued Owen Hargreaves on a pay as you play deal. This caught a lot of people unawares and left a lot of people asking why this signing had to be made judging by the fact that Hargreaves has played less than 5 first team games in the last 2 years.

Chelsea also had a few tricks up their sleeves with the signing of Raul Mereiles from Liverpool. This deal was left very late and only became possible after Mereiles handed in a transfer request about an hour before the window closed. It was eventually confirmed that the deal had been confirmed some minutes after the window had supposedly closed. Its worthy to note that this happened after Chelsea had been denied the chance of signing Porto full back Alvaro Pereira earlier in the day.

With the 8-2 drubbing of Arsenal by a determined Man U side on Sunday, Arsenal were left in a situation were they had to act and act fast in order to appease the fans who were already calling for the sackings of both Arsene Wenger and the entire arsenal board. The ire of the fans albeit pushed the board into action in the transfer market. The signings of Park Chu Young, Andre Santos and Per Mertesacker were confirmed the day before the transfer deadline. This was a good move by the board to plug the apparent holes in the arsenal side though the fans still felt that wasn't enough judging by the departures of Ces Fabregas and Samir Nasri.
The best was left for last with the loan signing of Yossi Benayoun from Chelsea on deadline day and the last minute capture of Everton attacking midfielder Mikel Arteta whom most arsenal fans saw as a good replacement for the departing arsenal captain.

Altogether, the deadline day suspence was worth it for most teams that added players into their ranks and sadness for those that had to lose players.

What was your take on the transfer deadline happenings?

Arsenal obviously have added confidence with the new signings they made. Top 4 should still be within reach and maybe one of the cups.
Trying to sound modest though.
