Sesame seed promotion is part of government’s action to boost non-oil export in the country.

Nigeria earned $612.7 million from the exportation of sesame seeds as the leading global producer of the commodity in 2010.
Minister of State for Trade and Investment, Dr. Samuel Ortom revealed this at the flag off of promotion on ‘’increasing sesame seed production for export,’’ by the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, NEPC.

He said the sesame seed promotion was part of government’s action to boost non-oil export in the country.

It's safe to assume that many more people are not also aware of its existence or lucrativeness. Nigeria could earn more if they did more publicity in order to encourage its production.

Sometimes I wonder why our Government chooses to deceive us, I am a trade finance specialist and an Export consultant (exportnigeria..com, 3timpex.com) and we have the data of all the products exported from Nigeria from 2006-2010 based on the NXP registered with Nigerian Banks which is a pre-requisite for exportation from Nigeria. The table below shows the data of the the volume of sales made for some of the commodities exported in 2010 of which sesame seed sales is just $157million due to huge post harvest losses.
Commodity Total (USD)
Cocoa beans 651,258,142.84
Cocoa butter 54,125,706.18
Cashew kernel 41,495,692.88
Cashew nut 18,988,066.08
Sesame seed 157,071,597.40
Ginger 9,418,397.79
Gum Arabic 32,340,295.86

TOTAL 964,697,899.02

Why do we like window dressing the truth from the public? We have potential to hit $600million in volume for the sales of sesame seed alone but we are not yet there (since more than 70% of our farmers are peasants we have not even utilized up to 50% of our arable land). But try to face the issues confroting us and tackle it head long instead of deceiving the public

Sesame seeds are in high demand in the Uk for its oils and use in confectionary. However, Ghana is a major supplier to the UK even though we produce more than they do.

How many know that Nigeria is the top yam producer in the world, but Ghana exports more than Nigeria. Most of ours is lost to lack of proper storage

I knew the statistic was dubious. A year or two ago, huge efforts were being made to increase the export of the product abroad, so, i was surprised at the incredible leap in export figures.

However, the real tragedy, is that it doesnt take that much to improve the product to the next level, before export to the secondary consumer - thereby earning thrice as much.

Na real mumu person dey happy say e dey export "raw material". E be like make u export timber, come inport toothpick. Tchai! Una don hear am ooo ma peeenpunnnl,

About 30% of the Nigerian land is arable without required much efforts from the govt, however, the planted land is only 10% of the arable land; 3% of the total land of Nigeria undecided

na lie o! I have been in this sesame seed field for more than 7yrs. I am fortunate to work with olam nig.ltd, the largest agric produce company in 9ja,if not in africa. I can authoritatively say that this is far from the truth. Should we start seeing people's loot as govt gains? This govt and foreigners go kill us o.

The oil have a high poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) content in it, these combination has low quantities of the saturated fatty acids which can as well be commercially and nutritionally desirable for both business and food.
