Ikuforiji: EFCC raids Lagos Assembly

By Olasunkanmi Akoni & Gbenga Akanmu

LAGOS – Officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commi-ssion, EFCC, yesterday, raided the Lagos State Assembly Complex for the second time in two days.

It will be recalled that the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr. Adeyemi Ikuforiji, was last Friday arrested and quizzed by officials of EFCC in Abuja over allegations of perjury and stealing of over N7 billion state funds.

In the fresh raid, men of the anti-graft agency were said to have stormed the complex as early as 9am in an operation that lasted till 2pm.

It was gathered that the EFCC operatives carted away volumes of documents, especially from the accounting office of the Assembly.

A source from the Commission said: “Our men were directed to retrieve files, vouchers and cash books from the accounts department of the Lagos Assembly so that investigators working on the case can complete their investigation.”

The source revealed that some the staff of the department may have hidden some files sought after by the officials, an action which he said informed the follow-up visit to the office.

A petition written by a civil rights group, Nigerian Anti-Corruption Vanguard, which prompted the EFCC investigation had alleged that Ikuforiji mismanaged N7 billion running cost of the Assembly in 12 months.

Da Doc, You dey dia? I dey salute.

There is so much wanton waste of tax payers money in this country by our sit-and-chop public office holders. When EFCC was created I was happy there would be a level of respite from unnecessary corruption. Embarrassingly, EFCC has been grossly ineffective and unspartan [I wouldnt know if it is cause by too much interference from the presidency or what]. I understand with Nigerians when they jeer at EFCC's moves in their attempt to prosecute these corrupt personnels. They have not given the people any reason to believe they are the hope. It is the usual brouhaha. Their BARK is worse than their BITE. At the end, it is still water under the bridge and they live happily ever after with their public loots.

Long Live Nigeria, short live her leaders

Where are the former corrupt Governors like Gbenga Daniel? SAM EGWU and the like. They are all free men. Where is KENNY MARTINS who was quizzed on Police money and many more? Bankole and Iyabo Obasanjo?

If you guys are not intelligent enough to know that EFCC died after Ribadu was eased out then it you that should SHARAP TEN TIMES and find work to do instead of wasting your money browsing the internet.
Re: EFCC Raids Lagos State Assembly Complex by libby77: 3:53pm On Sep 07, 2011
I think people are forgetting the fact that EFCC has a mandate to investigate financial crimes and ICPC for corruption, It is not that EFCC is not doing their job but the Judiciary system in Nigeria is corrupt and broken because all cases that the EFCC takes there die there, In the Courts. It is the interference of powerful government officials and influential Politicians who control the realms of power in Nigeria, IMO.

Abeg EFCC should go and sit down one place. Since they were commissioned, how many corrupt leaders have they prosecuted?

Nonsense and ingredient! angry

All gra gra and no action.
Re: EFCC Raids Lagos State Assembly Complex by aloyemeka1: 5:01pm On Sep 07, 2011
Does the EFCC have the right to raid government complex?. Lagos assembly members are democratically elected by the people of Lagos state, if they have probable cause to investigate them, they should go through the right process instead of harassing elected officials. Their behavior is irresponsible and uncalled for.
Re: EFCC Raids Lagos State Assembly Complex by Ericomoto(m): 5:10pm On Sep 07, 2011
EFCC and their usual I.G.G (Initial Gra Gra). after that nothing again, so many arrests, harrasments and yet none of the looters are in jail. they are still walking the streets and oppressing us with the loot. The Farida woman has not achieved anything since she came in.
Re: EFCC Raids Lagos State Assembly Complex by odogwux(m): 5:44pm On Sep 07, 2011
@ aloy-emeka - your question is a very deep one. The question you may want to ask is why was the EFCC set up in the first place when we had a police force that is empowered by law to clamp down on financial crimes. The Act that establshed the agency empowers it to do just that.
Re: EFCC Raids Lagos State Assembly Complex by newdeal(m): 5:48pm On Sep 07, 2011
EFCC as useless as Jonathan. They should stop the bruhaha!

^^^

That is too crude an expression to use in describing the person and office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, no matter what! I think the time has come when those who moderate this forum should do something about this kind of unguarded comments, you don't address your leaders like that.

Mind you, I have never been & I am not a supporter of President Goodluck Jonathan.
