I don't see anything wrong with it. tongue
French used to be the pauper's language too and probably so was English. with Latin being the superior language.

I don't see why English now should be superior over local dialects just because they were former colonizers. as long as you're not in english language classroom, speak whatever language you know best. patapata e, people will try to look down on you for not speaking White man's English. that's their problem. as long as you're comfortable with yourself. cool

So so sad. Why can't somebody complain about the poor states of our local languages instead they are complaining about the poor state of a language that was forced upon you by people who raped our country. Isn't this what they refer to as the side effects of "stockholm syndrome".

Why don't you worry about the extinction of African languages? Colonial mentality @ its best.

No mind dem jare, it is the result of colonization. The same thing happens in every country that was colonized. They say history is written by the victors. When another country occupies you and subjects you to live by there ways, you identify with your occupiers and you lose your identity and your culture. In fact, you even look down on your own native culture as inferior to that of your captor you can see this in every work of life from fashion and beauty (bleaching cream, wigs, weave ons and hair straightening) to giving child naming (chamberlain or goodluck) . That is the problem with naija. Let's hope that as the country develops, the people become more self aware and become more confident with there own culture.

Seconded!

We have British English, American English, Australian and New Zealand English, Why can't we have Nigerian English?

We need to worry about preservin our local languages. And stop trying to compete with american and british english. Why cant we just be original and do us. Accents, pidgin, slangs and all. There a time and place for everything. Formal and informal. When in naija speak as nigerians do!

English can die in Nigeria for all i care. We should worry about the deplorable state of our native tongues. Billions of people speak English, hence, it will make little or no difference to the British if it dies here, but we are going to be so sorry if ours die.
On the other hand, whatever language you speak-be good at it!

Have you ever wondered about the falling standard of the English Langauge in Nigeria. In schools, TV, churches and even on radio standards have fallen beyond redemption. There seems to be the Nigerian version of the mall English. How would non- Nigerians understand us? Is the "Niglenglish" evolving?

Even after exactly 8years 4months of the last comment here.... Pidgin English is still waxing stronger and stronger by the day.
Late Dagrin in one of his songs once said "They say i don't understand English, does the white man understand Yoruba?"
While am in support of Nigerians sharpening thier english for formal settings, nothing can compare to fluently expressing ourselves in our repackaged english garnished with local flavours.
Even Americans speak adulterated/bad english always in most INFORMAL dealings with friends and fam, how much more us who manage the stuff as a second language.
