Liebherr has delivered two LHM 180 mobile harbour cranes to the Onitsha River Port, Nigeria. The machines have a maximum lifting capacity of 64 tonnes and a maximum outreach of 35 metres and will be used to handle a wide variety of break bulk cargoes including iron billets for the steel mills, building and construction materials, spare parts, wine and spirits, tyres, cements, cars and the occasional container, an area where growth is expected. The cranes can also be adapted for bulk handling if needed.

The ports on the Niger River in Nigeria are undergoing a program of dredging and refurbishment in line with Nigerian government policy. The Onitsha River Port has been refurbished and up-graded over the last year adding warehousing, port accommodation, storage space and the two Liebherr cranes.

The project was coordinated and carried out by Inter-Bau Construction Ltd. Owner and chairman of the group Sir Nath Okechukwu said: “Building something like a river port for the benefit of the local community gave me great pleasure. Working with international companies such as Liebherr, assisted us in the equipment selection part of the task and we hope to work with them again on future projects.”

Emmanuel Aguda, resident engineer from the National Inland Waterways Authority said: “The cranes give us great flexibility allowing project cargo up to 64 tonnes, a variety of break bulk cargoes and even use of a motor grab for bulks later. They can also transit to all areas of the port.”

Just two
Re: Liebherr Delivers Two Mobile Habour Cranes To Onitsha Port by russellino: 2:42pm On Sep 15, 2011
I would have expected more capacity than 64 tons but no wahala what's important is that the facility starts doing what we have been praying for. But Inter-bau? I am not too sure if their track record in road construction is so rosy

Good.

I'll love to see that port in operation. That will surely reduce the cost and unnecessary lives lost in the course of transporting items on the East-West roads.

Yea. how are many are in your yaroba caves called states. From oyo to ondo to oson to ekiti to ogon its the same story of poverty and mud houses in your respective state capitals. Am sure what is eating you up is envy of the continues skyrocketing economic fortunes of the SE.

@seanet02

I smell envy? Tell me it is not true

Anyways, "just two" is better than nothing. A journey of a million miles start with a single step.

You are just being a daft. Do you have any in your home state? So that we can properly analysis which is laughable. FYI: Onitsha Port will be the 2nd busiest port in Nigeria after Apapa. This is a port that is fitted with the some of most modern port facilities.

@Chino11

Don't the DOKITA, he is just jealous. Let him go and develop his Yoruba states instead of being tribalistic. Without lagos, yoruba's don't have say. Even the Lagos is economically controlled by non-natives.
Re: Liebherr Delivers Two Mobile Habour Cranes To Onitsha Port by chino11(m): 3:42pm On Sep 15, 2011
The mobile cranes is in addition to the permanent cranes fitted by Inter Bau. So in all there maybe around 5-7 cranes for a start. Because I know that within a year or two the Port will definitely expand further.

@Seanet and Chino11, can't you guys do without tribal bickering?  Is this what Nigeria needs now to get out of under-development? Politicians are looting the country dry and you guys are throwing insults at tribes. Seanet, you should not have called a whole tribe 'primitive'.  Chino11, two wrongs do not make a right.

Anyway, I was reluctant to post this reply because all the previous ones like it went unheeded.

^^

Ofcos the reverse is the case. It is very evident that yaroobas are the most primitive and backward people in Nigeria. Even the almjiris are better off.

This is a great development indeed. Its easy to see that whole are becoming an industrial hub with goods travelling from ports in Warri to Onitsa, Onitsa to Lokoja, the international airport across the river at Asaba, the new link roads bein built between Warri and Asaba, East-West road and railway links from Calabar through Onitsa, Asaba, Warri etc. It really looks promising.
Re: Liebherr Delivers Two Mobile Habour Cranes To Onitsha Port by efisher(m): 5:23pm On Sep 15, 2011
Seek ye first the port start-up and every other thing shall be added unto it. 2 cranes may be small but as they say, the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step (In this case, 2 cranes cheesy ). Nice one.
Re: Liebherr Delivers Two Mobile Habour Cranes To Onitsha Port by chino11(m): 6:29pm On Sep 15, 2011
Bro beaf, this tread is about Onitsha Port and its economic importance to the SE and by extension SS. You don't need to mention warri, asaba, east-west road or any local/state airport before we know how it will affect your state and other neighboring states. biko

^^ Fool, because your father Obasajor is a mega fool. The Onitsha Port will be the Nigerias busiest port. Am sure your dying of frustration that SE is overtaking your occultic, ogboni, backward, unprogressive yaroba states. At least the whole of yarobaland is still in darkness when it comes to civilization. My cousin that is serving in ogun state said that mud houses are so common in abeokuta the state capital and this is house it is in all the state capital of yaribaland, what do you make of that. Onitsha city is to all the yaroba cities put together to what New York city is to Kampala. Even after ruling the country for 8yrs you guys remains the poorest region in Nigeria.
