US, Russia, China, France, UK are the countries "allowed" to possess nuclear weapons. I am just wondering why they are allowed to own these weapons, and sanction countries who decide to develop theirs. The US cites reasons such as countries misusing these weapons. Apparently, the United States was the first country to use this weapon against civilians (1945 Japan). In my opinion, if everyone is striving for world peace, then nuclear weapons should not exist. @Poster, in the age of information technology, you are really asking such a question? Are you unaware of the push, for some decades now, to rid the world of nuclear weapons? Use your head for a minute there and consider how allowing other countries acquire the very same you are trying to rid the world of could be counter intuitive. nuclear weapons are not meant to be used,d effect could b devastatin. they just serve as a threat. that is why the nuclear powers want 2 prevent it fallin into d hands of vicious ppl who will not hesitate 2 use it. unstable countries where terrorists operate nd rogue regimes are prevented from acquirin it so d world will be a safer place |

the present powers have used it b/4. They also used chemical weapon in asia - vietnam. b/w the first two bombs dropped in japan and the orange, ? chemical, there was only 20 something years. they are still using depleted uranium on civilians. they must stop this short sightedness especially when the condition of the planet is taken into consideration. their interest today does not automatically guaranty a better tomorrow for their children and the children of the less powerful countries' survival. every action that we take today has coinciquencies 2morrow. nature is our companion and committed helper but she can also be a ruthless and inconsiderate destroyer. peace. |

For the same reason burglars prefer unarmed homes and property without adequate security. It's much less of a risk and hassle. Those with ill intentions would always like to deny their prey with equal footing and america has killed so many it's hard to figure out who's really the terrorist. |

Having a nuclear weapon is a big deterrence to any aggressor. Those weapons cannot be in the hands of every country cause of instability of governments and power politics as anyone with such weapons almost have the capacity to influence the policies including foreign policy of governments that don't have the weapons. China can carry out its foreign policy to the core, even at the detriment of a powerful Japan because of nuclear weapons, Britain can still lay claim to falk island today because of nuclear weapons, France can still dictate to every francophone country till today because of nuclear weapons USA can get away with so many atrocities because of nuclear weapons, Russia can continue to annex territories because of nuclear weapons. The smaller countries like India, Pakistan, Israe,l North Korea etc are nothing in the scheme of things as their nuclear weapons are mostly short range and isn't that powerful and cannot threaten the world unlike the big five whose weapons can be delivered anywhere it wants to strike But the truth remains that nuclear weapons are useless because it can't be used and there is an assurance of Mutual assured destruction (MAD), they are just a form of deterrence and "checks and balances" between the big five. Finally international politics is all about interest and dominance, none of the nuclear powers would want each country having nuclear weapons as it would diminish their dominance and their interests and foreign policy might never be achieved. 2 Likes |

Owing a nuclear weapon is specifically meant to serve as deterrence for other countries; deterrence in the sense that, if Iran own a nuclear weapon for instance, US will have to think 20 times over before invading/attacking Iran. However, restricting others from owing a nuclear weapon is in a bid to ensure global world peace and stability. It is majorly assumed that countries that are led by a dictator(s) are prone to the abuse of such weapon. I personally believe that, regardless of dictatorial nature of the leader in question, no sane or insane person would want to use a nuclear weapon against any country. For instance, imagine North Korea using a nuclear weapon on South Korea? The US will wipe out North Korea within a blink of an eye; and there’s no leader that can rule without a kingdom. So owing a nuclear weapon primarily serves better as deterrence and protection of the territorial integrity of any state! |

nwanna89: Allowed isn't an appropriate term. Iran has stated more times than we count if they develop a nuke they will destroy Israel. Israel likely has nukes they have not nuked Iran. India and Pakistan are also nuclear. BTW the threat of nuclear bombing is one reason there has not been a WWlll or WWllll. |
