This had me wondering if the entire internet traffic in Northern Nigeria is routed through Atiku's American University of Nigeria (AUN). But even at that you'd expect the scale to tilt in favour of Lagos.

Representatives of one of the most important internet companies in the world visited AUN last week and came away impressed.

Google became interested in the University after it discovered that 55 percent of internet traffic from Nigeria came out of North Eastern Nigeria, specifically AUN.

Ego Obi, the leader of the three-member team and Google's Technical Program Manager for Sub-Saharan Africa, saw an IT structure at AUN that could serve as a model for other institutions.

"We were keen to see how this small university as compared to other users in Nigeria could pull this off, so we decided to visit," Ms. Obi said. "The idea in the visit is to understand what you are doing here, what you’ve done and to take back lessons from this experience to implement in other institutions."

The team’s visit helped the corporation learn the exact purpose for which AUN community utilized every Google online facility, as well as the problems students and faculty encountered in their use.

In the presentation entitled "Google Africa University Programs," Ms Obi said Google was working toward partnering with institutions to understand their current infrastructure, using processes that identify challenges encountered by users. She also emphasized that AUN ranked top among a few others on the continent with commendable facilities, and observed that Google was ready to partner in those areas of requirements. "AUN has superb infrastructure, but we know there are areas of gaps," she said. "We expect you to help us identify those areas."

Forgive my ignorance but I just dont understand how this is possible (Perhaps I didnt get something right) so I'll d appreciate being enlightened. To put this in context let me quote a lecturer in the university Derrill Watson (http://econwatson..com/2011/09/fascinating-sentences-aun.html)

"Our school of less than 2000 people uses more internet than all of Lagos (14 million) and Abuja (the capitol) COMBINED"

So much for Lagos being the country's technological hub!

Actually read this in a newspaper on Monday, it sounds far fetched but I think there's got to be some sort of explanation.

Hmmm, it would still be doubtful even if 55% of internet traffic to "google website" from Nigeria originates from that university not to mention 55% of the whole internet traffic from Nigeria!

Re: Atiku's University Responsible For 55% Total Internet Traffic In Nigeria! by stiyke(m): 11:54am On Oct 05, 2011
if a school of 2000 can is generating 55% of internet traffic, pls what are the students doing? Na only internet them come use? A serious school like that with tasking accademic work will leave students little room to use internet. Oh i get it, each student has a microprocessor, motherboard and WLAN connected to his brain so all their actions and thought use internet. Even at that, it cant beat Lagos alone.

False stories when will they stop??

the 55percent is for requests related to google services, not internet bandwith.

Google became interested in the University after it discovered that 55 percent of internet traffic from Nigeria came out of North Eastern Nigeria, specifically AUN.

I find this statement hard to believe. I manage a small website and in the past 2 weeks, here is my traffic statistics as compiled by Google:

1. Lagos - 1770
2. Abuja - 1298
3. Port Harcourt - 217
4. Warri - 43
5. Zaria - 40
6. Kano - 28
7. Kaduna - 25
8. Ibadan - 22
9. Jos - 16
10. Nsukka - 9

I understand that American University of Nigeria is in Yola. As you can see, Yola is not even on this list. May be we are missing something from the article.

Dem just dey psyche dem so that they can make them use more of their product.Even if all the student and staff use internet to communicate they will never achieve what VI alone uses in terms of bandwidth usage.

Regardless of the bandwidth they've got, I bet this is an attempt to make name for AUN.

Cos i don't see how ONE university can beat the degree of presence of the THOUSANDS of Internet cafes in Lagos alone, not to talk of an ENTIRE country.
