Audi A6 C5 2,8 V6 30V Quattro Tip.

The most important maintenance item is the timing belt. If it breaks in service, you're looking at heart-stopping bills, in parts and labour. Bent valves, and possibly piston crown damage, depending on how fast you were going when the belt broke.

When replacing the timing belt, everything the belt drives MUST be replaced. In the 2,8 V6 30V engine, this includes:

01) Timing belt.
02) Timing belt tensioner (hydraulic).
03) Timing belt idler / relay pulley.
04) Water pump.

It is imperative the items listed above are replaced at the same time. It is pointless replacing just the belt. If the water pump seizes, it will bust the teeth of the belt, resulting in catastrophic engine damage. The same goes for the tensioner roller, and idler.

Replacement interval is every 60,000 miles or 5 years, whichever occurs first. When I purchase a car, the timing belt and associated parts are the first things I replace, if the previous owner can't satisfy me they've been done. The rule of thumb is to assume they need doing, and get them sorted ASAP. No if's, no but's. A timing belt can last well over 120,000 miles, but you're on borrowed time at this mileage, so cut corners, and ignore at your own peril.

Audi A6 C5 2,8 V6 30V Quattro Tip.

The 2,8 V6 engine is a well-proven design, and will cover well over 300,000 miles without any major overhaul. Regular servicing, and the use of good quality oil are key though.

The 2001 Audi A6 2,8 V6 is normally on Audi's Longlife Service. Personally, I don't like this. I prefer the optional AVS (Audi Variable Servicing).

Oil should be Castrol 5w-30 or 10w-40, or the equivalent. A genuine oil and fuel filter are recommended. Aftermarket air and pollen (cabin) filter can be used.

The auto tranny is a ZF-5HP19. The killers of any auto transmission are heat, and dirty fluid. As much as possible, when stuck in traffic, shift the lever to neutral, if left in drive (D) the torque converter will attempt to move the car, and with your foot on the brake pedal, the ATF will heat up. When driving, and coming to a stop, before shifting to park (P) briefly put the shift in neutral, (N) apply the handbrake. Then shift to park (P). This ensures there is no load on the parking lock. The ATF should be replaced at least every 40,000 miles.

Audi don't specify a replacement interval, but it MUST be done, you'll need the oil pan removed, washed. A new gasket, filter and O-ring will be required. The ZF transmission is used in Range Rover, BMW, Jaguar, Bentley and many other makes. It is extremely sensitive to fluid grade. It will NOT tolerate regular ATF Dexron II. Only genuine grade from Audi, or a ZF specialist will do. The procedure for fluid replacement is extremely complex, I'll email you the steps.

@Sienna
Thanks for your swift response, apart from what you stated above, what other day to day things do I have to do to keep my car in tip top condition? I am not too knowledgeable about cars, so I would would appreciate all the tips you could give.

Also, for other members of the house, where can I get an expert Audi mechanic here in Lagos? I dont want people doing experiments with my car and where can I get Audi parts?

Thanks

Audi A6 C5 2,8 V6 30V Quattro Tip.

The braking system is good, the 2,8 V6 has 288 mm front discs. The rears are also disc brakes. The fronts are pretty much your regular set-up, and tolerant of low pads. However, the rears incorporate the ratchet mechanism for the parking brake, and not very forgiving if the pads and discs are allowed to wear down till the pads lose their friction material. They will overheat in use.

If the rear pads are allowed excessive run-out, besides heat, the caliper pistons will extend too far, and can be difficult to retract, to allow new pads and discs to be fitted. Unlike the front calipers, whereby the pistons are pressed back into the caliper housings, the rears need to be screwed in, and pushed in at the same time. This requires a special tool. Over heating due to completely worn pads and discs can damage the internal ratchet mechanism, so it is imperative the rear brakes are not allowed excessive run-out.

Like most cars, the front brakes on the Audi A6 2,8 Quattro have approximately 75% braking, while the rears have 25%. As a general rule, the rear pads will require replacement on every third front pad replacement. So, the rears last three times the fronts.

Brake fluid is hygroscopic. In laymans terms, brake fluid absorbs moisture. The higher the water content, the lower the fluid boiling point. This means the brake fluid will overheat, and boil under moderate braking. This will lead to brake fade. This is when the car is driven hard and fast, the brakes are applied. The car is driven fast once more, the brakes just about slow the car down. The third time the brakes are required in an emergency, they won't stop the car. This is because the fluid has over heated.

The fluid should be changed every 2 years, with DOT 3 or higher brake fluid. Excessive water content in the braking system also promotes internal corrosion in the brake master cylinder, brake calipers, and worse, the ABS pump / modulator. The pistons will stick, and the ABS warning will illuminate. The only way past this is a new, or refurbished ABS unit. In the Audi A6, it is combined with the control unit.

Pystar, I will continue to post tips on maintenance for your Audi A6.

I'm sure you can get Audi parts in Lagos. Should you get stuck for genuine Audi parts, I can supply all you'll ever need, both used and brand new originals. I don't do aftermarket Audi parts.

Hi Mr Sienna, please how do I solve this problems? My check engine is always on and at times blinks, the ABS and oil light are always on and after I start the engine it says "service engine soon" of which I just serviced it but the light wouldn't go off. My car also consumes more fuel nowadays and I hear a funny sound from the right front tire whenever I enter a gallop. I hardly see the graphics on my trip computer, what do I do Sir? Would really appreciate your help.

It would help if I knew what car you have - make, model, year and engine size.

With regards the Service Indicator, it is triggered by distance covered and time. Once the engine has been serviced, the indicator doesn't know the service has taken place. It needs to be reset at the same time as the service, so the count down starts again.

Audi A6 Quattro C5, 2,771cc 2 x DOHC 30V, 193 bhp.

Most common cause of the CEL being illuminated are as follows:

1) Faulty MAF. Performance may feel flat, and fuel consumption will be higher than usual.

2) Faulty O2 sensor/s.

3) Faulty CTS (Coolant Temperature Sensor).

I would do a scan, rather than assume what it may, or may not be. The OBD capability is designed to make diagnostic more automated, and therefore easier, so there's less chance of trial and error, and random (expensive) replacement of parts the car may not need. Please get the car scanned for faults. By all means, chear the codes, but first write them down first, with their definitions where possible.

When you say the oil light is also illuminated, do you mean the service light (Oil Insp, Service Engine Soon) or a seperate oil light (should be in your digital display)? Was the oil light on before you had the engine serviced? Please confirm.

All Audi models from '98 can have the service warning cleared manually, earlier models will need to use VAG-COM or similar tool with service reset capability via the OBD port.

For your '99 Audi A6, the service warning is cleared as follows:

1) Press and hold button on right side of instrument panel.
2) Turn ignition to the "ON" position. "SERVICE OEL" or "SERVICE OIL" will appear in display.
3) Release button.
4) Pull out button on left side of instrument panel until "---" or "SERVICE ---" appears in display.
5) Turn ignition off.

That's it.

Now your ABS issues. Could you please give me your tyre sizes? I mean every one of them, front and rear, and we'll take things from there.

Thanks for replying Sir,I appreciate. The oil light on d digital display blinks even before I serviced about two weeks ago and still blinks whenever I drive.Had a diagnostic run on my car just last week and all error codes were cleared, just bought the car not up to a month now n I don't know what d error codes meant before it was cleared.I recently noticed in fuel consumption than when I just bought it,a mechanic said d nuzzles needed service n I did service it but still d car consumes more fuel. I use "16" tire size for all wheels.Sir is it true d engine fan needs to be permanent on d engine rather than letting it be d way it was designed just to avoid over heating? Hope to hear from you Sir,thanks a million.

The oil warning - is it a red oil can image? Does it "beep" when it first comes on? Does the engine rattle, even slightly, especially when you first start from cold?

I still say you'll need to scan the car again, with regards the CEL. It's bad practice to simply clear codes, without first noting them down for future reference. Besides, if you scan now, how will you know if any of the original codes came up again, since you have nothing to refer to?

Fuel injectors. Stop paying mechanics who claim to "service" them. There's no such thing, you're getting ripped off. If injectors are faulty, they're either sent off to be dismantled and rebuilt. This includes new needle valves, new seals and pintle caps. Then they need to be re-calibrated. In view of this being a specialist procedure, I would advice new injectors if the old ones are faulty, which means leaks, damaged needles leading to poor spray pattern. New, not used, as you have no way of knowing how new ones perform, till you've bought them, and paid labour money to have them fitted.

Please don't tamper with the cooling fan. It was designed to allow the engine to operate at its most efficient temperature range, in conjunction with the thermostat. These cars are driven in Texas, Nevada, Arizona etc where ambient temperature often exceeds that in Nigeria, and they don't overheat. Just make sure your cooling system has coolant mixed, not plain water. Plain water has a lower boiling point, and is the most common cause of engines overheating in Nigeria. You should always run a 50/50% water / coolant mix at ALL times.

I still need your tyre sizes. 16" is just the rim and tyre diameter. I need the sizes on the tyres - like 185/55x16, 205/60x16 etc.

Thanks Sir for your message, the engine doesn't rattle before start up and the oil warning I get is inform of an exclamation mark "!" But wit circles around it in d dash. I just reset the "service engine soon" light and its okay now.I will do a rescan of the car and keep records of error codes as recommended by u Sir for future

reference.Both tires at d front are 205/60 R16 each
and the rear are 215/60 R16 respectively.Concerning the fuel injector I will have it checked, actually thought it was my MAF dat was
causing the high fuel consumption. Thanks MR Sienna,I appreciate your concern.

Warning like this? (!)

With the different size tyres you're running, you're looking to destroy your transmission!

For starters, AWD cars need the SAME size tyres front and rear. The reason being, the smaller tyres will rotate faster than the larger ones. To sum this up, the smaller wheels will cover more revolutions per travelled distance than the larger ones. Your Audi A6 Quattro runs a TORSEN (Torque Sensing) central differential, a differentials sole purpose is to compensate for difference in wheel speeds when you're turning. It is not meant to compensate when driving in a straight line. Your TORSEN differential is working PERMANENTLY, trying to compensate for difference in speeds between your front and rear wheels, due to different sizes! This will kill your differential in the end. The TORSEN differential will be over heating.

And on automobile with ABS, the wheels MUST be the same size all round. If the wheels are forced to rotate at different speeds due to size differences, the ABS sensors will read the difference in wheel speeds. The larger wheels will be turning slower than the smaller, and the ABS will assume these slower-rotating wheels are on the verge of locking up whilst the car is on the move. It will then deactivate the system, triggering the ABS warning.

The constant speed differential between your different-sized wheels will make your car thirstier, as the differential constantly trying to compensate will cause a lot of drag. On a dry road, your tyres will also be getting scrubbed to heck.

The correct size tyres for your Audi A6 Quattro are 205/55x16 or the optional 215/55x16. No mixing is permissible, front and rear MUST be the same size.
Re: How Do I Take Care Of My Audi A6r by elviszzz: 2:24pm On Jan 14, 2012
The constant speed differential between your different-sized wheels will make your car thirstier you wrote, does this mean it will consume more fuel Sir? No wonder d ABS on d dash is constantly on. The exclamation mark u drew is exactly what I see on d dash and I will make sure I change the tires asap. Thanks a lot Sir,you've saved me from damaging my transmission.Thanks.
Re: How Do I Take Care Of My Audi A6r by Nobody: 4:02pm On Jan 14, 2012
^^^ Bro,  by thirstier yes, I do mean your car will consume more fuel.

The
(!) sign is a brake warning, it can indicate your front brake pads are low, brake fluid level is low, or it can come on in conjunction with your ABS warning light. So your oil pressure is fine.
Re: How Do I Take Care Of My Audi A6r by elviszzz: 4:08pm On Jan 14, 2012
Thanks Mr Sienna, you've just saved and I appreciate.I will have the tires changed and will make sure they are all d same size and would chech d dash to see if d (!) Still blinks on d dash, thanks Sir.

Mr Sienna,I will change the tyres as specified and do I still need to have the ejector or MAF checked? Cos I noticed more fuel consumption nowadays than former especially when I just bought the car. Is is also possible to use tyre size 205/60 r16 all round I mean both front and rear tyres? Hope to hear from you soon Sir,thanks.

Please leave the injectors alone. If you have a check engine light, then a scan should reveal any codes.

The recommended tyre size for the Audi A6 Quattro C5 is 205/55x16 or the optional 215/55x16. 205/60x16 is no good for your car, the profile is too high, all it would do is alter the gearing, put more load on the transmission. No good for the differential, no good for fuel consumption.

Sorry for derailing the thread but this looks like one of those rare moments I wont allow to pass without tapping from the inhouse VAG Guru.

I have a 99 vw passat 1.8T 20V ADR MT. Got it used from Germany in 2010 @ 83km been used by My wife.

Have been driving like a dream till I had this sudden overheating issue which managed to clear after replacing the radiator caps. I was quite careful about oil spec and used Mobil 1 but noticed that it got dried up after a short interval. Later changed to Mobil 20w50 xhp and was fairly ok though not like the initial machine. I later got Total's 15w50 made to vw 500 & performance improved

I've been battling with hard starts in the morning & had 'injector' plug cables changed as they were accused of loss of contact; situation became better but hard cold starts persist

Was recently out of town when I had a distress call from my wife that the there's some noise from the rear wheels and asked her to have it checked: the workshop said they had to grease the hub bearings & all noise stopped

After about 1 week of this bearing issue, I've been confronted with a permanent Airbag light on the dash; a blinking (!) after driving for about 10mins and it comes with ABS lights.

Could you be kind enough to decipher these issues & what they may be pointing at. Do I need a VAG.com diagnostic or just anyone will do? Thanx
