Following a directive from President Goodluck Jonathan, the National Economic Management Team (NEMT) is to review dam projects across the country.

The directive came on the heels of an evaluation report on water projects by the Presidential Projects Assessment Committee, which indicated that the country was losing 3,600 megawatts of electricity due to poor designs and improper costing of dams across the country.

Information Minister Labaran Maku disclosed this after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by Jonathan at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja.

Maku said besides the review, the council also approved new guidelines for the presentation of project proposals to the FEC for approval, saying the modalities were to prevent future mistakes where awarded projects were abandoned.

He said the resolution followed a briefing by the committee, which he said indicated that the country has about 200 dam projects, some of them completed while others were at various stages of completion.

He said the committee told the council that the dam projects were designed to supply water for human consumption, generate about 3,600 megawatts of electricity for the nation and were also designed to have the capacity to irrigate 3.1 million hectares of land for various agricultural purposes.

The council also agreed to reinforce the technical departments of some of the key construction ministries for efficient supervision of projects. It also said that in drawing up contracts, public interest must supersedes contractors’ interests.

Simple maintenance issue. They should not lie about poor dam designs to give out contracts to "build" the same dams. I have seen some and it is poorly maintained.

One of the things i like about GEJ administration is the way by which they evaluate and analyze things thoroughly to know the strengths and weaknesses first hand. It is very unusual of the Nigerian government way of doing things.

Give kudos where kudos is due.

I can see how smart an intelligent you are; they are more than 20yrs old so therefore they should be bother right? Dams in the U.S., Europe, et al have an average life 2x of 20 years, they still working their purpose they were built , then it's a 20yr old dam (still in the baby stage).


Please don't use a Nissan Bluebird, and even if you do, if it was designed with strength and durabiolty in mind, you don't need someone to tell you that after 50 years with 400thousand miles in service. Then again use something more comparable in resource and size. Try using an airplane (MD's; these are one of the oldest, yet still in service), try ships,(most have been in service for more than 30 years) yet they work ok. Try infrastructures within its class- let me know if you need HELP.

Anyway, a bad design is a bad design, if you designed a design a bridge for a max life of 50 years that [b]should [/b]carry 100 thousand cars daily, with a bad design, obviously if it carries that 100 thousand, that bridge WILL NOT last for 15years, the stress on it will collapse it. Same principles applies everywhere.

This dam was built for a purpose - if engineers who built it did not factor in that it should last 40years or more with ability to generate 3,500MW of electricity, call it anything you want, it NEVER achieved its aim of generation nor it's life expectancy.

I'd like to know the members of that committe and which dams they checked?
By the way, did the committee speak with the companies which built the dams?? The purpose or mandate given to the company might have warranted the design

I womder the companies The Federal Government used as project managers for such projects? Whom were the government officials that authorised the payment to the Construction companies that built those dams?
