Lagos State University students, LASU, protesting the proposed hike in tuition fees, recently announced by the insitution, have barricaded the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
The sudents locked the road with a seized BRT bus and an articulated truck, as movement on the road, as at the time of this report, is at a stand still.
Vehicles going out to Badagry are stuck just as incoming vehicle into the mega city cannot move beyond the school gate.
Trouble started this morning when students union executives of the school mobilised their colleagues for the protest. Other students were chassed out of the examination halls in the ongoing 2010/2011 2nd semester examinations.
Vanguard gathered that the increase is over 700 percent .

Lagos is working, instead of paying such a huge amount to get a university education in Lasu, I will gladly pay more at Covenant than waste it in Lasu, hmm mm wondering what the state government is up to with this one.

This is still affordable compared to UK tuition fees which will be raised to £9000 (N2,300,000) from next year. Currently it stands at about £3400 (873000) a year for UK nationals. This is even more for international students.

The education isn't of the same quality. I dont think their cost should compare.

The fees are outrageous considering the standard of the educational system available in LASU.I'll prefer to go into a business with that money than study at LASU.

Instead of free education, see what we are getting?
Re: Protesting Lasu Students Barricade Lagos-badagry Expressway! by MarcAnthon(m): 5:45pm On Oct 22, 2011
Reading those fees, the first thing that came to my mind was wtf. How many families can afford those fees. Western college education is much more expensive comparatively but there are scholarships, fellowships and loans that are spread out for at least 20 years after graduation, that makes it very affordable at least for their nationals. Also, education is free until the end of high school, so families have 16-18 years in a functioning economy to save up for their kid's college degree. Until we get those same conditions in Naija, comparisons will remain unrealistic.

I'm afraid, other Universities might want to dance to same tune soon.

Sometimes i wonder where all of Lagos-generated revenues go to? Really, if Lagos state, one of the richest state in Nigeria cannot fund her one and only state university, then, i'm afraid of what would become of others~ smh.

No good road,
no electricity,
no cheap food for the masses
now, education is pretty expensive! Don't send some parents to their early grave, pls dear ACN leaders, do something good about this. #concernedCitizen

former governor of lag state bola tinubu a.k.a gabagan bribed some lasusu excos given them a sum of 180k to silent d union. some students usually pay twice d old sch fees of 25k. since inception of lasu, sch fees was #250 to #25,000 and now 278k.

Heard about it on nigerian info 2 days ago. The question I mean to ask is if the authority give any reason for increase?
Re: Protesting Lasu Students Barricade Lagos-badagry Expressway! by Kilode1: 7:37pm On Oct 22, 2011
Is it possible to support subsidy removal and oppose this fee hike?

I'll like to hear that argument.

Kilode?!:

Gba si be!!!
I just do not understand how Nigerians think. A few weeks ago, some were shouting, "remove fuel subsidy", forgetting that our economy depends on it. The mere mention of such a move has started its effect on the Nigerian masses. By the time its removed, come next year, we shall see what will happen if they no go do sontin! undecided
Re: Protesting Lasu Students Barricade Lagos-badagry Expressway! by doofanc: 7:45pm On Oct 22, 2011
yet you people will be the first to complain about the falling standard of education. nothing wrong in increasing the fees, IMHO.
