To talk true,it is both the STUDENTS and TEACHERS that caused it...Student don't just have that urge for learning, they prefer pinging 24/7,doing nonsense on web, without even trying to look for what will benefit them in academic...Although,i dnt say they shouldn't ping but it should be limited......Teachers who are not expert in their respective field are employed to teach, imagine an Agric teacher teaching Physics, and at the end He produces dull science student and some of these dull students also pass their fake knowledge to the next generation. Thus this continues like a chain reaction of an atomic bomb...Tell me how a student in a school that has no standard laboratory will perform well in Science..will a School that doesnt cover their syllabi do wel in WAEC and NECO? No ,i remembered when i was in SS3,we didn't even touch AC circuit,Quantum physics, metals and their compound, nuclear chemistry e.t.c and some important topics in Biology.<well,i have to read that own my own before sitting for external exams> .....Students too should plz Read wide and try to develop interest in books...THANK YOU 2 Likes |

Dnt blame d students!!! D skools av made it possible for students to b promoted without hard Work, dey practically encourage laziness just because dey wanna make money. Students on d other hand have siezed the opportunity to enjoy demselves and and pass without stress. If these students writing ssce and jamb are dat dull, den how did they progress from jss1 to ss3? Does dat not show dat d skools have low standards? If d skools keep a standard higher dan dat of d exam bodies, den most of this students wud av repeated some classes, nd wud av become a lot more serious with their studies. If d skools make it clear dat d only way to move forward is thru hard work nd diligent study, den d students wud hav no choice weather dere are distractions or not! |

cdamsel: i don't think its d distraction dat make students fail,d white folks which we like 2 compare ourselves wit re even more playful dan a "play play" nig kid.there is time 4 everytin & until we re able 2 strike a bal btw it all mayb we wld c changes.we fail 2 understand dat d learning skill of every child is diff,u can't put slow & fast learners 2gether d slow 1ce wld always get left behind.d edu system shd b looked @.so you mean you dont believe that all the mentioned factors can cause failure ?well maybe you live in China or India...Even if you put in the best gadgets and do not limit distractions, you will fail. |

TayoDemola: Students are no longer dedicated to their studies. Some teachers are also not dedicated to teaching. But students should be more dedicated and take it more serious because it's their future. If you fail, you're the one to bear the brunt, not your teacher. That's the problem..they don't believe their future lies in education..most of them are in school because their parents forced them to be in school..when an average youth looks at the likes of Dangote,Otedola,2face and so many other successful people in our societies who aint even graduates and then take a look at their parents who claim they graduated top of their classes yet aint succesful in the way Nigerians define success ..then they loose interest in education..I believe unless we find a motivating factor that will majke our students read and love education, standard of education will continue to fall |

I will like to base my arguement on some aspects 1,The attitude of d parent to d child,if d child's parent av atleast a basic education they will know how to prepare the child for d future nd if otherwise d child will b derail with no moral dat will allow knowledge to b impacted.2:The teachers attitude,Some are quack, some abandon their duty for their own BIZ,while others will not teach curriculum,Why then do u expect such student to cope. 3:The govt.also Contributed to this menace,no conducive atmosphere nd environment for d learned nd d learner.4.The students also Contibute to their failure by not given much attention to study, they av allow social life to imbibe into their system. One of my lecturer did say it is better to study harder nd achieve ur goals on time so dat u will not b consume by d society. |

Well, the blame cannot solely be put on social media..do we have special schools for dyslexia/dyscalculia sufferers?and its not a foreign problem..in secondary school back then,i knew a boy who wept as he read not because he is not serious but because he just cant understand, now thats a problem but we ignore it and assume because we read and understand its supposed to be the same for everyone.smh |

Foundation play a key roles in the life of a student, if a child foundation in education is not solid, there is tendency that he/she will continued having problems in is academic. Not that the student can not perform better but they are not exposed to the fundamental principles. |

ogbeche77: Nice post buh hv got issues wiv u on sum points; Nigerian economy has got 2 da stage whr it has 2 be diversified,we all aint gonna squeeze ourselves in2 da aura of education wch is becuming crowded,we produce graduates who remain jobless as rgrds white collar jobs,so d developmnt of dese talent reality shows r welcumed,u mustnt go 2 school 2 b successful in life,if u hv got a talent, flaunt it nd develop it... However, dis is 21st century,d era of technology,we nid 2 muv wiv da trend, social netwrking has been a gud idea,it makes communicatn less xpensive tho moderatn is d watchwrd nd anyfin done xcessively is bad Moreso, communication nd tech is da in fin now,we get xposed n learn new fins,we r @liberty 2 get both d negative n positiv msgs being passed across n mk decision However, students r becuming less committed 2 deir studies, dey claim dey knw wen infact dey don't nd time mgt has been a serz issue among students Govt aint dedicated,in dat recruitmnt of teachers has been on political criteria n not based on meritocracy As a matter of fact, any std dat wishes 2 succeed academically will always burn d mid nite candles, those wud pass wud definitely pass cos dey hv prepared whil reverse z da case 4 lazy stds |

To me what i think is this, the problem is from 1 parents 2 our leaders 3 problem of our economic 4 then the teachers. Explanation: 1, some of our parents do pay for special centres for their children to write exam so that they can score higher especially in Jamb, Neco and Waec so by doing this to the children, you don't expect the children to read well again because the have something they rely on, also the use of Black Berry china phones that can browse so they spend most of their time on the net. Explanation: 2, all our leaders are thefts they want to get rich by all means then they make thing hard for the poor, they show us how to steal with Biro {Embezzlement} so this will make the teachers to ask for some bribes if you want to pass well. Explanation: 3 thinking of it, things are really heard in Nigeria you don’t’ expect some one who av not eating for like 15hours to read well most people who have stomach ulcer are students, some parents will send their children to school they won’t send them money because some of them do not have and some student have to do something about it like working, and why doing this you may end up failing your exam. Explanation: 4 some of the teachers are not well trained some of them can’t speak good English some don’t even know the deferent between past tens and present tens {exam some don’t know this “that is the least thing my parent can do” but some will say that is the last thing my parents can do} even those that are youth coppers no noting, some Nigeria teachers are quarks they don’t do their home work well. So what the student learn is what they will know. |

How about we blame the educational system in Nigeria, not the youth. Technology and social media can be a blessing or a curse, but the foundation of the educational system is what determines the outcome. Look at the "brightest" countries in the world, they all have technology. Technology and entertainment are not the problem; actually, if you use these well, they can be an asset and bring innovation into Nigeria. The problem is the school system. Primary, secondary, and tertiary schools all need to be developed to create bright students. When there is quality, standardized education at all levels, in all Nigerian states, education will improve. Bring intelligent, well-trained professors and teachers at all levels of education with an innovative and enriched curriculum. Build good learning foundations in primary schools. Instead in Nigeria, you have poor access to education, dubious/sadist professors, outdated teaching styles and materials, tribalism, cultism and other issues. To take WAEC, JAMB, or any other examination, there are so many hurdles students must endure to take the exams. How can they do well if they are not taught how to take exams or good studying habits, and are not even given an enriched curriculum to do well academically and answer the questions well? Young people all over the world that have access make use of technology and social media. They like football, entertainment, and enjoying with friends. Why would Nigeria be different? The problem is the sh*t education system. There are so many intelligent and industrious people in Nigeria. However, the government doesn't give a damn about fixing the problems as a whole. Education is a federal issue. It cannot be done in a patchy way, state-by-state. If the country invests in their young, they will reap the fruit. Give the youth a chance! The adults have to prepare and show them the way. Don't eat your young. |

Dawdy: some of the causes are telvision, Films, Facebook, 2go, phones, BB, Games, Yahoo, football and music. All by technology growthI do not exactly agree and this is my reason, how much i.t exposure do we have in nigeria? how many of these students have or can afford a bb or even knw what a browser is? people are always too quick to blame technology but look @ countries like china and u.k with hígh i.t penetration do they fail like we do? Though i do not take myself as an ideal i watch alot of t.v and movies when prepn 4 my waec and jamb but my focus was to knw how people spoke english naturally,it help me so much i could deduce the meaning of words contextually, because i heard them being used in movies. The reason students fail is not in the secondary school but the primary, they have very little exposure and are often taught by incompetent village teachers who cant even express themselves properly. since English is our official lang,it wont be so bad if speak correct english to ur children instead of pidgin english that way you bring the classroom closer to the child. When my younger ones come to me for word meanings i always make them go get a dictionary and read the meaning out in my presence that way it sticks better on them. Now i would like to ask how many of you take the time to read books not related to your field? how many of you studied hard because you loved to learn and not just because you know 3rd is as good as useless? No generation come in isolation the problems student face are as a result of the bad precedents you adults have set before them. Before you accuse technology close ur facebook, nairaland and twitter account, smash ur t.v with the heels of ur shoe, flush ur p.c down ur toilet and go back to ur village to live under thatched roof. NO PUN INTENDED |

THIS IS A MULTIFACETED PROBLEM, BUT I CAN SAY THE FAILURE RATE IS DUE TO THE LEVEL OF CORRUPTION IN OUR SOCIETY, AND THE FACT THAT CORRUPTION IS FAST BEING ACCEPTED AS THE NORM. IN OUR SOCIETY. STUDENTS HAVE REALISED THAT THEY DON'T HAVE TO STUDY SO HARD TO GET GOOD RESULTS, ALL THEY HAVE TO DO IS TO WITHDRAW FROM THEIR PUBLIC SCHOOLS WHEN THE TIME FOR WAEC APPROACHES AND ENROL INTO PRIVATE SECONDARY SCHOOLS; AND THE JOB IS DONE. MOST PRIVATE SECONDARY SCHOOL ARE EXAM-MALPRACTICING CENTRES FOR WAEC,IN ORDER FOR PRIVATE SCHOOLS TO ATTRACT STUDENTS THEY ENSURE THEY HELP THEIR STUDENTS CHEAT IN ORDER TO HAVE FANTASTIC RESULTS, BUT GOD WORKS IN JUST MANNERS, SOMETIMES THE STUDENTS GET AWAY WITH IT ONLY TO PAY FOR IT WHEN THEY ARE IN THE UNIVERSITIES, SOMETIMES THEY PASS ALL THEIR PAPERS EXCEPT ONE IMPORTANT ONE (E.G MATHS, ENGLISH); THAT IS THE ONE THEY KEEP CHASING FOR YEARS TO COME. BOTTOM LINE, THE STANDARDS OF OUR SCHOOLS ARE SO POOR THAT IT WILL REQUIRE AN ALREADY GIFTED/BRILLIANT CHILD TO EXCEL, THE SCHOOLS HARDLY PROVIDE ANY SUPPORT FOR A STRUGGLING STUDENT, OR EVEN BELOW AVERAGE STUDENTS, THE SUCCESSES WE SEE TODAY ARE INDIVIDUAL EFFORTS OF AN ALREADY BRILLIANT STUDENT; HENCE MOST PARENTS/STUDENTS RESULT TO MAL-PRACTICES TO SUCCEED. |

We've all contributed nicely, social network, internet, keeping realtime friends and entertainment is only part of it, we all are forgetting the aspect of the mind that requires MOTIVATION, and CONTINUITY of focus... I can only blame the kids less, a huge part of the whole show is run by the parents who no longer make children get genuine reasons to study, they readily provide all that their children 'desire' all in the name of giving-them-the-best leaving behind what kids really need, by so doing reducing the spirit behind learning which is 'hunger' - no not the one you feel when you want to eat but the one that drives curiousity of knowledge, some parents even go as far as telling their children how they've planned their life for better future, forgetting what had driven their own success. Only ''hungry people can grow''... If there's anything I know is the fact that when people get too comfortable they loose drive and the spirit of motivation is killed, -- (when you look see say poverty dey becon nobody go tell you), in essence parents no longer give their children reasons to study, the same thing is happening in the world of religion(christianity). Complacency have eaten deep. I cannot over emphasis this. This problem is not only faced in Nigeria, even more in developed countries where young people get paid so early. Just read-- psychologytoday~''the problem with smart girls''. Thanks 1 Like |
