How did the nok people got horses?

This picture is said to be 1400-2000 year old. Where did the horse come from?

Horses aren't new to West Africa. In the 1st century AD, horses had already been established in Africa. They came from the Berber nomads who got then from Arab traders in North Africa. Horses also came via Chad from the Axums in Ethiopia.

Also that can easily be a domesticated wild ass (donkey) as they are common in Africa.

That mean this people trade with other civilization of their time.
Re: Nok Horse Man. by odumchi: 1:16am On Nov 02, 2011
No problem. And yeah they traded with other people's around them. I think that they were a very advanced people since the had things like the saddle, and unless I'm mistaken, the horseman is wearing a helmet Which probably means he was a soldier meaning that the Nok people had a strong and organized cavalry.

Here's a good article about some update about the Nok sites archaeology:

http://archive.archaeology.org/1107/features/nok_nigeria_africa_terracotta.html

The Nok civilization is fundamental in the history of Nigeria and Africa. I hope much effort and supervision are done by Nigerian universities (archeology department) and the government in general.

If that figure is 2000 to 1400 years old, like u say, there is no way they had horses at that time.

Perhaps its some kind of strange donkey... il have to do some research. undecided

If you look at how inaccurate & stylelized the figure is.... its quite possible that this is an artists depiction of a creature he had never seen.

In the same way medieval people in Northern Europe would draw African lions in their art even though they had never seen one first hand.

There's nothing funny in this. There's obviously many archeology departments as well as medicine, engineering and whatnot in Nigeria as well as the rest Africa. You only make yourself look ridiculous.
