Olusegun Obasanjo. Like Or Loathe Him, Is The Greatest Living Nigerian. by Irunmole(m): 10:58pm On Nov 04, 2011
Fellow Nigerians, I have sat, thought and pondered over our current crop of leaders that are still alive and wondered who to recognize, and bestow the singular honour of being called the greatest living Nigerian but found no one worthy of it other than, Retired General Olusegun Aremu Okikiola Obasanjo. Crude and controversial his ways and idiosyncrasies might be to some; his patriotic love, vision, unity and the achievement of greater things for our beloved country Nigeria is unwavering.

Right, before anyone start posting insults and such unsavory words, I neither work for nor have any connections with the person of the retired general,  just sheer observation of his achievements in trying to foster all that is good for the country and Africa, so far, till date, I believe qualify him as the greatest living Nigerian.

Without a shadow of a doubt. But expect the sheep in 3-2-1, they'll start bleating as usual, without any proof beyond the same old tired rubbish, Odi (soldiers were killed, their colleagues retaliated), power (sabotaged by the Northern power clique, led by Yar'Adunce), $16b spent on power (debunked time and again by people who know better), power probe (the man replied, they scattered, turned out it was a shake-down, led by the lead investigator himself, with the approval of Yar'Adull).

Obasanjo almost single handedly squelched apartheid and negotiated Mandela's freedom (says Margaret Thatcher), sent the military back to the barracks and kept them there, got rid of the odious debt inherited from idiots like IBB, Shagari and Abacha, brought back the dead middle class, sorted out telecoms, strengthened the banks, got us R-E-S-P-E-C-T from the international community, so tey even Gaddhafi, who intimidated Abacha in this same Nigeria with his guards, was made to behave himself by small Fani-Kayode!!

He put our aboki friends in their place, and demystified them completely, freeing the Middle-Belt and Nigeria as a whole from their grip in the process. He almost single handedly installed Jonathan with that famous statement to the comatose but concealed Yar'Adua that the cabal was using to torment all of us:"Yar'Adua should do the honorable thing and resign"! That's the statement that set off the noisemakers like awon Save Nigeria, and gave Dora Akunyili the courage to set the chain of events rolling that would eventually see Jonathan installed as Acting President. First time a Southern Minority, first time an Ijaw Man, the people feeding Nigeria with their oyel, would become President!!!

Stopped Atiku, IBB and the murderous Buhari dead in their tracks with some correct political maneuvering that left them dazed and gasping for breath. They're still gasping!!

On top of it all, the man still actually works as a farmer, daily!!! At his age, !! IBB, the younger man, has ALL his(our) money abroad in France, servicing the comatose French economy, instead of bringing it back here to help our own economy.

Atiku is busy collecting mansions all over the world. If it's not Potomac, it's Dubai. Buhari is busy building a private Boko Harmy and bomb us all to death, all this while Obasanjo feeds the nation!!

Yes indeed. Obasanjo IS without a shadow of a doubt, the most influential, powerful, patriotic, detribalised African alive today.

djustice is mostly right on this one.

I'd have no real problems with OBJ if the politicians he had imposed on the SW had actually performed. That is my only major grouse with him.

Well, and failing on power.

I don't know when nigerians will wake up from their comatose state - how is it that a criminal, thug, IMF and world bank stooge like obasanjo can be hailed as a hero - I am convinced that nigerians are the most foolish set of human beings on the planet.

This man along with Ibrahim Babangida are responsible for destroying the standard of living of 90% of nigerians by implemening SAP and other IMF and world bank austerity measures.

IBB started the process and Obasanjo continued it these two bastards are the biggest traitors nigeria has ever produced.

buhari refused to throw nigeria to the IMF and world bank wolves and for that he was toppled and replaced with IBB whose coup was financed by the europeans and americans.

Buhari refused to allow the IMF wolves to appropriate nigeria's wealth and for that he had to go - obasanjo and IBB are the biggest pieces of sh.it on this earth and my prayer for them is that they will one day face the wrath of the nigerian masses for what they have done to that country.

keep fooling yourself - obasanjo carried on IBB's SAP programme that reduced nigerians to slaves in their own land, he is one of the biggest criminals nigeria has ever produced - he is responsible for lumbering you with another dim witted clown who will make sure most of you die in grim poverty.
Most of you are too dim to understand just how much contempt these people have for you, keep worshipping and bowing down to them - they are working hard to ensure that your future remains grim.

If OBJ is the greatest Nigerian alive then that speaks more about the sad state of Nigerian affairs than anything thing Baba Iyabo has ever done.

The joke is on you.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks @djustice for your well articulated response.

The only meaningful and most insightful response so far. Analytical, sensible and bereft of any silly, infantile and jaundiced name-calling contributions.

You only have to agree/disagree with my point of view with well-thought out responses please.

OBASANJO - THE CIA STOOGE:

Background to the recent Nigerian elections
General Obasanjo more than just a "friend" of the Americans
By Elizabeth Liagin
17 March 1999
Elizabeth Liagin is an independent journalist who has done extensive research into General Olusegan Obasanjo, who won the recent presidential election in Nigeria. She submitted the following commentary in response to the 5 March article "Nigerian election fraud leaves elite in control" by Chris Talbot

The 13 February 1976 assassination of Murtala Muhammad, which brought Olusegan Obasanjo to power the first time, was widely believed at the time to be the linked to the CIA. Perhaps the same might be said for the 27 February 1999 "coup" as well.

Obasanjo is more than just a "friend" of the Americans. He is an operative. And his involvement with America's foreign policy elite is a long, sometimes complicated, but delightfully interesting story.

There are several key persons and institutions that appear over and over in the Obasanjo files. One is Donald B. Easum, who was the United States Ambassador to Nigeria at the time of the 1976 assassination. Another is the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, where Henry Kissinger, who was Secretary of State at the time of the same assassination, serves as a "counsellor." Then we have Robert S. McNamara, a former World Bank president and the Secretary of Defense who carried much of the blame for the Vietnam War. More recently, McNamara embarked on an excursion to Haiti in the aftermath of the election that brought Jean Bertrand Aristide to office. Upon his return, McNamara pronounced Aristide "vehemently" anti-US, implying that the United States would be in for another round of whatever it was that Fidel Castro stirred up in people after his revolution more than two decades before. Within a year of McNamara's assessment, Aristide was ousted by thugs on the CIA's payroll.

Back to the seventies: At the time of the coup that installed Obasanjo, the US was still reeling from the OPEC oil embargo. That action would have been all the more devastating were it not for the fact that Nigeria, under Yakubu Gowon's leadership, had opted to breach the embargo and ship oil to the West. Because of the inflated price petroleum commanded at the time, Nigeria experienced unprecedented economic growth. When Murtala took over, the US immediately became concerned, not knowing if Nigeria could be relied upon as a supplier under a new regime. In an attempt to soften up the anti-Western ideology associated with Murtala, Secretary of State Kissinger proposed a state visit. Murtala told him to stay home--something interpreted in Washington as a "ten" on the scale by which political insults are ranked.

With due sense of objectivity, Obasanjo will always earn my respect. He has good and clean record, free of corruption and nobody has never tried developing our economy like he did. Those who do not understand economic key performance indicators do relegate him.

I give it to Obasanjo. He deregulated Telecoms sector;and made tecommunication accessible to commoners. He established EFCC, and ICPC. He put an end to fuel scarcity and also stablised the millitary.

He failed to allow Nigerians to decide who should lead them;but instead introduced "do or die politics".

Without a doubt the man "tried" but has his weaknesses.
Considering the fact he was handpicked from jail tells u he had unconditional Godfathers whom he had to be loyal to, yet he still performed to the extent he did.
U never miss somebody until he is gone.
