How To Repair A Spoilt/crashed Hard Drive by realisticm: 4:19pm On Nov 07, 2011
Hello my fellow nairalander, I need a help concerning my external hard drive,
It suddenly stopped working without anything doing it, and I have tried different
Tricks to repair it but it won't work sad I even remove the board and replaced it
With the same type of board (SEAGATE HARD DISK) yet it didn't work.
Can someone help me with this? Is it possible to repair a crashed hard drive or at
least transfer the files and document in it to another hard drive? Please help me
Cos it contains my projects and other people's work. God bless you

At this point, if you don't have all your data backed up, you may be toast. What you tried is good and at least we know that it is not the pc board.
I will try some of the freeware recovery software like Recuva, ADRC data recovery,

Good luck.

when you plug in the drive does it still make the normal sound that it used to make before it stopped working? - the sound of the disk spinning (or is it a solid state hard drive?)

you could try replacing the hard disk case too or better still if you have a friend with the same type of external harddrive (3.5"/2.5", sata/ide) you could borrow his case

don't mind sedulus, your problem might just be hardware related which means his solution will just be a waste of time and money

dont waste your time trying to repair a crashed drive rather use a software like recuva to recover your files from your bad drive. dont call any body and dont pay anybody. recuva is a tested and trusted free software. download it and solve your problem by your self goodluck

You did not specify if windows still recognizes the drive when you plug in. People are just reeling out solutions without proper diagnosis  shocked  shocked  shocked
No wonder quack doctors full Naija  grin  grin  grin
Just know that recuva can only work if you can still access the drive on your PC, if not you will have to reel out more money to a Data recovery firm that can access a completely dead drive with special devices.
I have lost two different external drives like that (windows couldn't recognize them anymore), after tons of trouble shooting, i ended up at a DR firm that gave me a quote of 45k for them to recover the files shocked I just dumped them. I have refused to ever buy external drive since then.

Get a laptop with linux or boot a linux lived and try and open it from there. Have recovered files from crashed hard drives with this method. It only works with drives that windows recognize that are plugged in but don't show on my computer.

If the live CD thing does not work there may be another way to do it. It is a computer forensic method for recovering files. Just contact me: weaseloo@rocketmail.com.

If it is an external drive and it has crashed it is likely gone. grin um . . . you cannot repair it @Poster. What you will probably need is a data recovery professional job and it costs a lot.
Re: How To Repair A Spoilt/crashed Hard Drive by denzel2009: 4:26am On Nov 22, 2011
With an internal hard hard drive, you could use a boot cd but an external one is tricky if the pc is not even seeing it.

Now that you have experienced data loss, make use of the cloud to back up your files. wink

@op,
you've not answered the question- Does your system still recognise it? When you plug it , is there an indication on de Hard disk that its plugged to a system?
Is the hard disk a ready-made or you got a external hard disk casin+hard disk and assembled it?
Don't know what your answers could be to this but if you can loose the hard disk, get a desktop Pc, slave de dismantled hard disk and try accessin it.
Wishin you de best ,

One good method to try out guarantee level is high. either U slave it with an already installed linux sys(I use Ubuntu/ Kubuntu) or U try installing it on the drive by slaving it to another system.

Yeah this works too when it has not gotten to a dead end. i.e when it newly occur / crashed.

But after trying this and it doesnt work, just use data recovery software to do it. but if u can on your own, u could just look for a friend that is an IT oriented to help you out. Good luck.

Well, firstly i would like to know what exactly and how come about the Hard Disk crash. The main reason why is because most of the issues with HDD's are based on the nature of damages and most especially the last activity on it.
I would advise you reply so as to suggest on the next line of action about it.

Re: How To Repair A Spoilt/crashed Hard Drive by realisticm: 11:56am On Nov 23, 2011
My PC does not recognize the hard drive at all, when its connected to my pc and i check the property of the hard drive it would say unknown device and when i try to open it it will write error. i even removed the hard drive from the external casing and i inserted it into my pc directly yet it doesnt work nor it was recognize by the computer. so i thought this is not a software problem but hardware.
Re: How To Repair A Spoilt/crashed Hard Drive by blackweaver(m): 11:38am On Nov 26, 2011
it's a hardware problem alright; i'm not sure you can get it fixed by discussing on a forum, you'll probably have to consult a specialist - and then only to copy the data - the hard disk is gone. Although, i heard someone talk about putting it in the freezer for some time; i've seen that kind of comment on forums about similar problems. I can't vouch that it works though, i've never tried it myself

Hi, i have a similar issue. The hard drive spins and makes the usual noises. The light still blinks and when plugged, windows sounds that a new hardware was added but Nothing comes up or shows up on the desktop or computer at all. Anything you can recommend?
