Nairalanders Efforts To Accommodate & Empower A Family Found Living Under Bridge

The Journey So far.

After reading the story of Mr Obuh and family (pregnant wife and kid) on this thread (Nov11) http://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-801338.0.html#msg9532930 , a number of people felt concerned and believed something should be done to help this man and his family. It was agreed that the family should 1st be visited to confirm the story. Ifyalways volunteered and she visited, interviewed, took pictures of this family under the bridge and confirmed that their story was indeed true (Nov14).

Many of us then felt we should raise funds among ourselves and help this family get an accommodation and also help them start a trade of their choice so that they can continue to take care of themselves afterwards.

Shortly after we agreed on this and started raising funds(Nov15), we got a lot of conflicting stories of how other people offered to help and the Obuhs rejected all the offers (Nov16,17). We then requested Ifyalways and OlowoTee (Nairalanders) to pay them another visit (Nov18,20). They confirmed to us that most of the conflicting stories were not true, some were exaggerated and the said accommodation gotten for then was not in any way better than under the bridge they were living. On hearing this, we decided to resume the goal of helping this family as earlier intended (Nov19).

We were encouraged by the contributions of many members here and with the amount realized we have been able to secure a decent one room accommodation with some furnishings for this family (Nov24).

We believe we should not just give a man fish but teach and equip him to fish so he can look after himself and family. Because of this we wish to get a small shop for the family and buy them some items they can trade with. Also we hope to put the little boy in school.

On this regard we still seek contributions of more Nairalanders.

We need about N120,000 more to complete the project.

Attached is the account showing the funds raised, how much has been spent so far and the balance.

Also attached are the pictures of the family in the new accommodation we got for them and all the items bought for them.

God bless you as you give towards this cause.

Signed

R231, yamakuza, OAM4J, Ifyalways, Jarus, & OlowoTee

I am so humbled. The things so many of us take for granted.

Mr Obuh and family, I wish you all the best and may you & your family always find favour in all your endeavors. May you never know sorrow again in your life. Your children will excel and make you proud. It is well with you. Amen.

Just a quick one pls.
A few seconds ago, i received a phone call from the News Editor of PM News, the direct boss of Ayodeji -the reporter who has been writing false stories about Monday Obuh. He must have gotten my mobile details from his co-worker who is a family friend, and whom I reported Mr. Ayodeji to! Now, they are sorry for their wrong reports and want us to give them full details of everything we've done so far, with the mind to re-writing the story about the family that lives under the bridge.

Importantly, I refused to give them any detail, nor the present location of this family because I am not in the best position to do so, hence, I told him I was going to tell the organisers and donors of the project and get back to him our conclusion.

All they want from us is to come to their office with the Obuh's family. I won't be surprised if Ayodeji losses his job going by the questions his boss was asking me. #really, that Ayodeji guy need somr disciplinary action.

Just yesterday, Mr. Obuh told us how much he has threatened him to get back to the house they rented for him in Ogun state. On Monday, Ayodeji and the gtbank woman had to lock up the room restricting Monday from picking his property, clothings, foodstuffs etc till date! sad

Now, what do we do? Do we visit these people -PMNews to have their stories retracted and clear the Obuh's family dented-image or have a press conference to address this issue once and for all? Thank You.

Nobdoy predicted  today ,many people are in need ,but they were just lucky because the reporter tried to help, but he must not be out of job because of it,future victims will not be reported ,or you endanger them .

All the journalists need to do is publish an apology. They don't need to know the location of the family. They will only make money off them.

That these people appear nameless and faceless do not in any mean that they should have their name sullied. Mr Obuh's deserves an apology in my honest opinion, their location need not be compromised. I am happy for the organisers to have a press conference and air the Obuh's side of the story and let whole matter be done with.
Re: Man Raises Family Under Lagos Bridge by chaircover: 4:08pm On Nov 25, 2011
tough call. If their faces go in the papers again, their new neighbors might think that they are loaded and they are at risk

Having said that, lazy journalism needs to stop especially when peoples lives are involved and peoples names are being soiled

I think its best to ask Mr Obuh himself what he wants you to do & let him make the decision because at the end of the day he is the one most impacted by all of this.

Let's not waste time discussing this, Taking care of the Obuhs is our priority we don't wanna give more room for distractions.

I think we shouldn't ignore them, afterall if not for them we wont know about this people. Also we need them to correct the wrong impression they created about this family

But the family should meet them at their office or at a designated location and they shouldn't reveal their current address to them for security purpose.

Also PM news should be given the link to this thread, if they need any information about our efforts.

I go with this. Our aim is not publicity. They can be referred to this thread to get whatever info they need. They can speka with OlowoTee on phone for other info they can't get here. But I don't think publicizing Mr Obuh's new abode will be ok.

I disagree with you Jarus, many of us including yours truly decided not to contribute any more because of Ayodeji's story. If Ify and Olowotee werent on hand to go and get the true facts, these family and especially two young children would have been denied a basic right to a decent livelihood. I have a live and let live attitude to life but I also detest cheating. Ayodeji deserves some reprimand, it's called taking responsibility for your actions

I'm so excited at all the transformations taking place in the life of this family.
Just like I said earlier concerning speaking to the press, its not necessary. Posterity will judge every one of them. Like someone mentioned, give the PM guys the link to this thread let them read and build up their story, I for one do not care. If we also are in the illusion that the GTB staff cant locate them if she wants to, we only delude ourselves. We should just ignore every other distraction and maintain a 'no comment' attitude. Those who are directly involved with this family should also advice the family to keep their mouths shut too!(its of paramount neccessity)
Once again, you guys are the best.
Re: Man Raises Family Under Lagos Bridge by OAM4J: 4:56pm On Nov 25, 2011
We will discuss with the Obuhs on the PM News matter and advice our members on ground on what to do.

back to the Obuhs. . .

As I type this, painting of the room and putting other fittings in places are going on. We hope to show you more pictures by tomorrow.

Next week our focus is on empowering this family so they can take care of themselves.

We are still looking for about N120,000 in addition to the balance we have.

Please support this project and God bless you as you do so.

I get your point, NB. I know the gravity of the guy's misreport. Maybe I'm overly sympathetic, having seen a person sacked before.

I was surprised when I read in a Nigerian newspaper of how the man supposedly rejected all the good offers made him. Now I know the truth.

It is good and really relieveing to know we still have Nigerians who have such large hearts and are honest while at it,not people who want to help others for fame or even for what they will get out of it,Knowing this gives one alot of confidence in this country,Thumbs up!!May God richly reward you all.

It's good to be sympathetic but you have to weigh it against the need to deter others from such indiscipline and outright fraud. If someone did wrong, s/he should be punished according to the laws/rules governing his relationship with the persons offended/society at large. That is the way a civilised society functions except we want to continue dwelling in lawlessness/impunity.
Meanwhile congrats for the outpouring of humane love towards our fellow Nigerians. May your good works be rewarded in multiple folds and ways- Amen.
