As year 2012 approaches many Nigerians will definitely review their business activities for 2011. For those who are not satisfied with the return on investment of their current business they will want to veer off into more lucrative businesses.

One of the rules to starting a successful business is identifying challenges and everyday problems encountered by the people, or communities around you.

If you need to start a business that you can grow to become successful and profitable the Laundry and Dry Cleaning business can be a good option. However before you consider starting a dry cleaning business you have to put into serious considerations the following factors;

a) Location: Your area of coverage matters a lot. If you start a dry cleaning business in a poor neighbourhood where 90% of the population prefer to do their laundry themselves due to lack of funds you may be climbing a steep hill and success will be far tougher to achieve. You will have a better chance at success if you identify an area, neighbourhood or even a residential estate where the standard of living is average and above average. You can then be sure that if you do the right things you will achieve relative success.

b) Level of Competition: Dry cleaning and Laundry services may be lucrative but not when you are entering into a ground already occupied by several laundry services. You will have to do extra creative and ingenious work to turn your business into a success. So before you launch into any town or area do your business diligence and find out the level of competition if any.

c) Finance: The amount of capital at your disposal will determine things like if you start with two staff or only yourself, if you introduce mechanised laundry or make do with the manual process of laundry. Depending on the area you are and the level of competition available these things may matter.

These are some of the factors to consider. Now how exactly do you go about ensuring that you start and run a successful laundry business.

In writing this article we assume you have either registered your company/business or you should know the Steps involved in incorporating or registering your business. So we go straight into the framework of what you need to do to start a successful laundry and dry cleaning business,

@mrinfo

while I agree with everything you have said, i however disagree with the issue of locating a drycleaning outfit in an upscale area for a struggling newbie.

The reality is, those who can afford upscale enviroment must have enough money to start automated drycleaning immediately. Furnished office is a must to meet up with the taste and the environment.

We all know that investing in any business whatsoever is a risk!

Now, for a struggling investor, it is wise to start the business in an environment where your overheads will be minimal, in such an average or low enviroment cheap labour abounds, less money will be spent on shops etc.

As per getting jobs, the newbie will need to either employ agressive marketers who will go to the ''upscale areas'' to get the jobs. The marketers will be paid minimal salaries while their income will be performance driven by commissions earned on jobs secured.

Marketers come from as far as Ikotun Egbe, Abule Egba etc to secure drycleaning jobs from banks, hospitals, hotels etc in Victoria Island.

Some of my friends in a particular bank in victoria island gather their suits every fridays to be picked by a marketer from a drycleaning outfit somewhere in ibafo. The suits will be delivered by monday to the same office.

You will survive and beat your competitors better and faster if your overheads are lower and charges are moderates.

The import of my contribution is that, location is not a serious barrier in this business. In actual fact, you can start from your apartment and grow big time from there if you are determined to succeed.

It is a good business with minimal capital. All you need do is to get washerman and marketer if you can't market it yourself. Print business card and solicit for jobs through people you know first. Ensure you imbibe honesty and integrity in your dealings.

Drycleaning jobs are not difficult to get, just build your network of contacts. If you know any bank worker in any branch who can vouch for your integrity, then you can use him as your guarantor to get jobs from the bank and from his or her colleagues

This job is better than most paid employment becos it affords you of free time to do other jobs until demand is higher.

I wish all interested player in d business best of luck

Nice post, Also do you guys think distributing of fliers to homes would be of great help.
i actually thought of starting one in an estate where i live, but i'm having some kinda doubts about the profits

Distributing fliers will surely boost demand but you need to do more than that. A house to house marketing may be a better option since your target mkt is within the estate.

Offer first trial promo! Give us 2 shirts to wash, we wash 3rd one free! You will be suprised by your success rate.

The profit is good if you have financial discipline
