Re: Nepa On Strike! by Okijajuju1(m): 9:47am On Nov 18, 2011
Trans-Amadi Port-Harcourt has light atleast 14 hours a day and its been stable. Had light last night and it stayed on until today when I left for work.

I learnt of the imminent strike and President Goodluck Jonathan has ordered the military to take over all Power Stations in the country.

IMHO PHCN Staff are part of the people sabotaging the privatisation effort of the government and the Presidency needs to find a way to start firing them. Start with a 'no work-no pay' policy and work their way up!  angry

Enough is enough!

Re: Nepa On Strike! by CHIMCO(m): 10:11am On Nov 18, 2011
President GEJ should use this opportunity to transform the Nigerian power sector.ie if they are really on strike afte all there is no difference when they are on strike and when they are not. Cos in my area now we don't have light up to two hours in a day.
Re: Nepa On Strike! by kholis(m): 10:13am On Nov 18, 2011
@ poster. You are very correct. PHCN has declared a one month strike pressurizing the govt to implement a signed agreement for wage increase. It is on STV news this morning and many national dalies have the info.
Re: Nepa On Strike! by maxygirl(f): 10:18am On Nov 18, 2011

My deductions from what i have heard and read is that Jonathan is planning something big without their consent, they got to know, they decided to strike as last/first resort but the executive was a step ahead and called the military to protect all installations nationwide.hence, some parts of the country are not feeling the impact of the strike action

PHCN workers back to work

ABUJA— Members of National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE, and Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies, SSAEAC, who have been protesting against the occupation of their offices and other installations of Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, nationwide would resume duties today.

Acting General Secretary of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Mr. Owei Lakemfa, said this at a briefing in Abuja, yesterday, on the lingering dispute between electricity workers and the government.

Flanked by leaders of NUEE and SSAEAC, Lakemfa also served the government a two-week ultimatum to address all outstanding disputes it has with the workers or face an indefinite industrial action by them with the support of NLC and other affiliate unions.

He further explained that electricity workers had not been on strike as widely speculated in some quarters but instead had embarked on prayers to God to touch the heart of President Goodluck Jonathan over government’s deployment of soldiers to PHCN installations and offices.

He said the workers were also praying that the government honoured several agreements it reached with the electricity sector unions over Jonathan administration’s planned privatisation of PHCN.

In his remarks, General secretary of NUEE, Mr. Joe Ajaero, accused the Minister of Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji, of embarking on a campaign of vendetta against the leadership of the union for opposing his nomination as a minister by President Goodluck Jonathan.

Lakemfa said: “ Among the agreements reached between the unions in the electricity sector and the Federal Government are: A 50 per cent increase in the salaries of workers of PHCN; conversion of 10,000 casual workers into permanent staff; involvement of NUEE and, SSAEAC, in the evaluation of PHCN installations that are to sold by Bureau for Public Enterprises; settlement of labour-related issues before the eventual privatisation of PHCN”.

Lakemfa explained that among the labour issues that need to be settled were payment of various entitlements of PHCN workers including gratuities and pensions.

Ajaero said: “ Despite our grievances, the Minister has refused to dialogue with the leadership of our unions. He said he would not talk to us since we opposed his appointment as a Minister”.

Giving further insight into the increase in the number of soldiers deployed to PHCN installations nation-wide, Ajaero dismissed the Government’s claims that it was a precaution to secure such installations from terrorist attacks adding that the actual reason for Government’s action was for the troops to serve as escorts to foreign investors and officials of BPE who have been visiting these facilities.

In his own comments at the occasion, the President of the (SSAEAC) Engr. Bede Opara stated that even though his union agreed that there was need for reforms in the electricity sector, there was need for their own contribution to be accommodated. He further advised the Government to desist from threatening workers adding that this would not resolve the crisis in the sector but instead lead to its escalation.

FYI when you hear of phcn strike, its the administartive staff, area offices, The engrs who work in generation(the actual running of the turbines) dont go on strike. They are the only ones allowed in to the power station.
Re: Nepa On Strike! by zoogy2007: 12:05pm On Nov 18, 2011
PHCN is actually on strike but there is no total power failure as the poster has said. I dont know why people like spreading false rumours on the internet. It is really irritating. I have had power in my area in Portharcort for at least 20hrs a day since the power lines were upgraded and it has remained so till date.
Re: Nepa On Strike! by Nobody: 1:32pm On Nov 18, 2011
The strike undergone by PHCN officers is still on as i am typing this words. The nigerian military has moved in and taken over PHCN installations and there is no single PHCN officer in sight. There is now light in some few areas but it isnt stable while in other areas there is total darkness.According to my sources the whole of lagos is in total darkness while in ibadan there is light in some areas and other areas are in darkness. In benin the light is going on and off and the military is trying their best to save the situation.I repeat the nigerian military has taken over all PHCN intallations across the country and there is no single PHCN officer in sight.

@Swallu, are u an agent of darkness or destabilisation? Why keep peddling false info? There has been fairly stable power supply in Nigeria in recent months. For your information i reside in lagos and power supply has improved.

Re: Nepa On Strike! by drake2(m): 7:44pm On Nov 18, 2011

Re: Nepa On Strike! by efisher(m): 8:05pm On Nov 18, 2011
Stupid PHCN people. Is it their father's property? How does what the FG want to do with its assets concern them? Funny enough, if these plans work out, they stand to gain. More people will be employed and many of them will be promoted by filling in the new and expanded roles that will be created. Scumbags!
