Uniben Final Year Student Get 19 Years Jail Term


An Asaba high court presided over by Justice T.C. Makwe have sentenced one Chima Anthony Akpalaba, a final year law student of Uniben to 19 years imprisonment for kidnapping a 7 years old child – The daughter of the Chief Accountant, Government House Asaba  in February of 2009.

He bagged five years imprisonment for conspiracy to commit kidnapping; five years for kidnapping; another five years for child stealing, two years for demanding property  with menaces and two years belong a secret cult group, thereby totaling nineteen years. The sentence would however run con-currently.

The convict along with his co-travellers in crime had demand for N150 million ransom from the father of the girl but was arrested at a hideout in Okpanam by men of the State Security Service SSS.

All sentences will run concurrently which means he gets to stay in jail for only 5yrs. What he got was nothing more than a 5yr rustication.

Our judiciary still dont understand that kidnapping is a crime of the worst kind that deserve a different kind of justice especially when guilt has been established.

what makes it much more bad is that he is a law student, if that kind should be called to bar what will happen,i remember five years ago my father in-laws lawyer 419 me of 90,000 for an apartment he claimed he is the lawyer to the landlord of the same house he lives in (he got an appointment in the judiciary of kwara state so he needs to relocate)he went with my money till today.

Our laws are weak, if It were to be in developed world, particularly, where capital punishment is embraced, it would be more severe than this.This will serve as detterent to others.

Where 19yrs come from

It’s a surprise how the boy’s Ibo name has become an issue here for some people. Then we complain when we are racially insulted by the whites. How can somebody conclude that the boy is answering his mother’s name to show that his father was not involved in his life? It might even be because of ethnic bigotry in the country as displayed here that made his parents allow his Ibo and non Ibo names to reflect on his identity.
