Gowon Regrets State Creation! Lol.

By AbdulSalam Muhammad
KANO —Former Military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), yesterday, expressed regret that creation of state started by his administration had been bastardized to serve as a means of dividing Nigerians instead of uniting them.

Gowon, who spoke at the international conference on Islam, peace building and political engagement, organised by the Bayero University Kano, argued that the politics of state creation had triggered the battle for supremacy and the contest for power to the disadvantage of national unity.

Gowon also argued that the battle for supremacy among contending forces for political power was the major factor militating against efforts to sustain national unity and peaceful co-existence in the country.

He noted that efforts by successive administrations to entrench the culture of peace and harmony had remained a mirage due to ethnic polarization and religious misunderstanding, which he said, were mostly fuelled by those he described as “political charlatans.”

According to him, “politics with the attendant struggle for power in the country has deepened suspicion among Nigerians and poisoned national unity and peaceful coexistence. Many are quick to forget that the national unity they so much seek to undermine was paid for by the blood of patriots, who today would weep at our attitudes. The question asked by many these days is whether our sacrifices to keep Nigeria one were worth? My answer to this question is still yes!”

Gowon stressed that the task of keeping Nigeria a united and indissoluble entity is a task that all Nigerians must endeavour to accomplish, pointing out that ‘we must work to achieve national unity, peaceful coexistence and inter ethnic harmony’.

He called on members of the dreaded Boko Haram Sect and other militant groups in the country to sheath their swords and give peace a chance, as violence is an ill wind that blows no one any good.

The former Head of State said that at no time has the practice of Islam in Nigeria been so challenged by identity crisis as it is now. The former Head of state also called for constitutional amendment to accommodate issues that frustrate peace building efforts.

“I wish to quickly state that our political journey as a nation has tended to play the ostrich over a few issues that have continued to resurface as thorns in our flesh in our efforts at peace building.

“These issues are constitutional in nature and we have the opportunity to address them now that the Justice Belgore Committee is set to look into the issues requiring constitutional amendment.

Eminent Nigerians, religious leaders across the divide, politician and the academics witnessed the one day International conference .

Gowon is truly daft and dumb!
so he forgot that the only reason he created states in 1967 was to divide and conquer the east?
the very same evils of state creation manifesting in all parts of nigeria was only good as a war strategy to defeat eastern region of nigeria.
its like saying that you bring in a deadly snake to feed on the rats in your house, but get surprised when the snake start to bite and kill your own children. undecided

Gowon is the reason Nigeria remains in bad shape today. He has not started regretting his sins yet because loads of regrets are about to hit him on the face.

Gowon’s creation of states was the political machination which spearheaded the renege of all accords agreed in Aburi, Ghana. Gowon and his numbskull advisers engaged in the creation of states to render Ojukwu politically and militarily irrelevant because eastern region had been divided into three states and Ojukwu was not penciled as an administrator to any of the three newly created states.

So, Gowon can regret creating states? The same thing he used to destroy Eastern Nigeria, which in turn destroyed Nigeria. I'm shocked!
I've always said it here that all policies instituted in Nigeria to weaken the Igbo would end up weakening its architect while Ndigbo would keep waxing stronger. cool
The Bible says that righteousness exalts a nation.
Igbo will remain ahead of all their enemies provided they never copy the enemy's evil ways.

Gowon, IT IS VERY EARLY IN THE DAY TO START REGRETTING.

Calm down and enjoy the rough ride of your evil legacy.
Boko Haram will soon answer you. cool

Accepting his past mistakes makes gowon greater than many other so-called founding fathers of nigeria who we idolize as saints, but in the end, they are humans and prone to mistakes necessitated by circumstances. pple like awolowo, tafawa balewa, ahmadu bello, ojukwu, azikwe , although great, and did a lot of great things for the country, yet they were the architect of the problem of ethnic distrust we have in the country today, and sadly, they (until death) would never admit to this. how can the country correct the mistake of the past, if we never even admit to it. on this, i'd say - thumbs up gowon

Gowon is a borderline imbec.ile. Has he regretted the policy of abandon property yet? With the rate he goes about regretting his constructs, I shall not be surprise if he regrets setting up his family.

Re: Gowon Regrets Creating States, Says It Promotes Divisions by Reptane: 3:03pm On Dec 01, 2011
Gowon never regret any thing, His the foundation of modern day corruption in this country, the creator of states which brought about laziness among them, federal system that increase corruption at the centre, allow the Hausa-Fulanis to marginalized the south through their grip on power & imposition of their religious bullshit and they never contributed anything to the sucess of this country. Thank God the people of Jos are paying back for his sins. Nigeria will do better if will go back to confederational system, where every state controls and depends on what it generates, no be this monkey dey work, bamble dey chop system wen we dey practice.

Confession of a witchdoctor

Gowon has made himself biggest fool of the year.Ojukwu's Death must really be dealing with him.all this statement he is making is indirectly tell you he regretted the civil war and the aftermath.his guilt is pinching him so he is try to make up with words and seek forgiveness.he wants to die peacefully and be honored so he wants to make up for all his past mistakes.

when he was doing it to divide the south eastern states he did not know he was dividing Nigeria there more.am should he would also regret not accepting aburi conference report

I forgive me sha and i beg all my Biafran brothers to do so too, cos one thing is to do wrong and another thing is to realize that it is wrong and also seek for pity. ASfterall we are children of God and not usman dan fodio's

This vindicates and make Ojukwu more a Hero, i really pity his situation children of biafra are finally smiling.guilty conscence don dey worry the man.but let him know that no leader dead or alive and in the nearest future will beat Ojukwu's heroism so long as Nigeria still exist.

Now that the violence has reached his doorsteps and consumed his kindred with no rescue coming from the centre, he can as well negotiate and cede his land to the HauFul or promote a motion in government to reform the indegenization policy or consolidate states.

The chickens have truly come home to roost. He unwittingly shapened both ends of his sword in 1967. To use it now without self injury is a problem. There's so much to say on this matter, far more than a phone can express.
Re: Gowon Regrets Creating States, Says It Promotes Divisions by bankylan: 3:17pm On Dec 01, 2011
The problem is not with state creation, it is about people. It is all about personal interest, and not collective gains, Why are the Ibo brothers angry with Gowon?, Imaging someone saying that Biafra will still be actualized, I pray it doesn't happen. Igbos are not in any way united, And I believe the new generation should do something about Igbo culture and tradition. Also, it is obvious that the igbos overestimate themselves.
In as much as I like everyone created by God, I still find it hard to associate with the Igbos.
I can imaging the intra-tribal war that will ensue if Igbos are left to govern themselves, But thank God Biafra never saw the light of the day, perhaps the tribe would have gone into extinction.

Gowon is very stupid. He started states creation and his successors followed his footstep. What is he complaining now? He will regret more in his grave.
Give the South East its equal share of States as the other zones, then the bastardization can begin.

This clown ain't seen nothing yet though. Nemesis is coming and is approaching fast. His dance with the devil is just commencing. Middle belt and all enemies of Igbos would experience hell but one that descends gradually from the northern direction.

Karma never ceases to amaze.

Pls, where did Gowon wake up from. Did Boko Haram send him a romance letter?
Or was any of his kinsman killed in recent unrest in Jos?
Gowon, i don't understand you please.

seriously, do u think givin south east one more state will solve the problem of southeast and nigeria? gowon started it by creating 12 states, but how many states do we have now? and how many more are we clamoring for? it is time we re-traced our steps. state creation broods ethnic distrust, it creates unnecessary overheads, and more avenues for looting, besides the fact that 60 % of the states created an not economically viable.
gowon started the bad trend, he is regretting it, it s time  the present govt do the same.
Re: Gowon Regrets Creating States, Says It Promotes Divisions by donbuchi1(m): 3:42pm On Dec 01, 2011
The Aburi Accord did not see the light of the day, as the Gowon led government had huge consideration for the possible revenues, especially oil revenues which were expected to increase given that reserves having been discovered in the area in the mid-1960s. It has been said without confirmation that both Gowon and Ojukwu had knowledge of the huge oil reserves in the Niger Delta area, which today has grown to be the mainstay of the Nigerian economy.

In a move to check the influence of Ojukwu's government in the East, Gowon announced on 5 May 1967 the division of the 3 Nigerian regions into 12 states - North-Western State, North-Eastern state, Kano State, North-Central State, Benue-Plateau State, Kwara State, Western State, Lagos State, Mid-Western State, and, from Ojukwu's Eastern Region, a Rivers State, a South-Eastern State, and an East-Central State. The non-Igbo South-Eastern and Rivers states which had the oil reserves and access to the sea, were carved out to isolate the Igbo areas as East-Central state.[5]

Gowon has not started regretting. For him to confess his regret now shows that he has harboured this regret for long. Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.

You will regret usurping power and destroying the espirit-de-corps and army seniority rule which would have allowed Ogundipe, Adebayo, Ejoor etc to take power after the muder of Ironsi.

You will regret the massacre of Ibos in the North before the outcome of civil war without anybody brought to punished or victims punished.

You will regret the Aburi Accord betrayal which will have given us the framework to address out multi-ethnic problems and establish the foundation of Nigeria economic growth

You will regret your myyopic economic policies of your 9-year rule which encouraged wasteful importation and elephant projects which appeared to be developmental projects because of the oil boom.

You will regret that you will pass on to meet your God in frustration and pain from the knowledge that Nigeria is a failed state ( and may never attain its potential) and your future generatio and (your tibe) will be pay for your visionless and mediocrity.
