dear pmdaboh,

it's an infinitesimal number of nigerians that are truly multi-lingual.
yeah, the country is rich in many beautiful languages; but, by my
estimation the common denomination is pidgin/broken english,
you can call it the green-card to every nook and cranny of nigeria!
maybe i exaggerate.

OlowoTee & diva_naija,

everyone speaks. you spoke. she's spoken. then, i 'spake' [or, is it spark!?].

olowotee,

i served in kogi house of assembly; was the editor of confluence kopa.

lokoja, life there is slow and steady; no mind-bending traffic jams, etc
i did enjoy the 'agba naago', 'olodudu' of the igalas, and the 'wada yins'
of the ebiras, it was real fun yonder though i didn't have it all!

keep keeping on!

I must confess the way people construct their grammar, use and spell words on this site is terrible. Sometimes I wonder what type of institutions they attended and where they learnt their English! It devastates me to read some sentences atimes, it's really poor, very poor. sad

The spellcheck option is there to correct errors, people should put it more into efficient use. Maybe it will help.

make una no dey kill us for this site!!! angry

Rubbermaid:

No. I can't teach anybody English - it's not my job. I save my skills for my professional presentations, thesis, and other communications.
Additionally, it looks like those who need to improve their language skills are not bothered enough to take advantage of classroom lessons, or dedicate themselves to self-help solutions.

Ironically, we wonder why so many Nigerian graduates are treated like crap when they apply for jobs.  Prove this, prove that,  line up, take a test, touch the sky, hop like a toad, etc.Bad English is the reason! If many can graduate from Universities with such poor grammar then of course, all bets will be off in assessing the quality of their credentials.

I think you got it wrong there. The Chinese and even other Europeans commit the worst grammer crimes yet they are admitted and employed with ease.

Tell me the educational system is poor in Nigeria and I will agree with you. English is not our language and no one should crucify anybody for not speaking it well. Even the English speak and write nonsense. Again remember that not everybody that posts here is a graduate. What you see here is Nigeria. Not every Nigerian has good education.

Meanwhile thank you for having a good command of English though you shouldn't have bordered telling us.

Hope you also have a good command of your own language.

pmdaboh:

I am an African American woman married to a Nigerian man, and prayerfully he will soon join me.  When I first came on Nairaland and read the way many Nigerians were writing and expressing themselves, I really thought it was another language (broken down).  Until I read what Rubbermaid wrote today, I had no idea that was suppose to be English.

I agree with Rubbermaid that many Nigerians need to improve their written language, but I think "refusing to participate any further on Nairaland because of it" is pompous--to say the least.  Perhaps if Rubbermaid wrote consistently in correct grammar, then others will see the need for improvement and know how to correct their errors.

Being an educator, Business Education Teacher and Department Head of Technology, I admire the written and spoken word.  Being able to present yourself in a professional manner is of the utmost importance when applying for various positions, for you not only represent yourself, but you are also representing that company or organization.  However, I believe Rubbermaid was very harsh in the way she addressed the issue.

My husband is Ijaw, and I am learning to speak and write in Ijaw.  As Americans, we should not think the "world is English, and if anyone wants to communicate with us, they better learn English".  I love learning Ijaw, and I know one Yoruba word (o da ro/goodnight).  I was VERY IMPRESSED with how many languages Nigerians know how to speak. We Americans learn English (by birth) and other languages that are incorpoated in our school curriculum.  But because we do not use those other languages learned in school on a regular basis (French, Spanish, Chinese, German and others), we lose the ability to speak them.  Yet Lagos, Nigeria, who has so many rich cultures dwelling together, is full of diverse languages.  This was one thing I LOVED about Lagos, Nigeria when I was there for two weeks.  I GREATLY ADMIRE the way Nigerians can speak in several languages, and it has birthed a desire in me to learn more languages too.

Yes, many Nigerians need to learn to write and punctuate English correctly, but "WE ALL NEED IMPROVING" in something in life.  No one is an exception to that--not even Rubbermaid.

Patricia

Be tuwapereh (tuwapereh/blessed in Ijaw)!

Talking of African Americans, do they speak English? Spare us pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Dear Seun - Nairaland Moderator,

This is a formal request asking that you ban me [quickly] from your forum. Please do so before the level of English Ninglish used here kills, maims, or adulterates my own command of proper English grammar.

Following my recent visits,  I have left Nairaland wondering what in heaven's name is happening in Nigerian classrooms? What has happened to those days of yore when you were drilled until you mastered correct usage of English grammar by Primary three?!

For example,  I clicked on the discussion item at the top of the 'hot list' today and almost suffered a fatal blow when the poster started with "Have you ever sit, " I understand occasional 'slip-ups' however, the repeated instances on this forum has lead me to believe that these folks just never learned proper English,  or have not bothered to keep up by reading well written literature or revisiting early lessons from time to time (and as needed).

I am now officially fed-up with Ninglish and would like to turn-in my Nairaland membership before irreparable damage is done. I will now be  moving over to the Nigerian Village Square. Nigerians there seem to have better control of the language. Ironically, they seem to make better sense too.

Respectfully,

Rubbermaid.

PS - English is your friend. Blame those who made it our national language. Peace.

Rubbermaid,

I admire your erstwhile unrelenting resolve not to read posts on Nairaland replete with grammatical mistakes. You have made a good point. It is instructive to note, fleetingly, that the mastery of the English language and its proper application is without doubt, one of the hardest tasks to accomplish. In saying this, it does not mean it is improbable.

However, one salient point you conveniently ignored is the fact that people come to Nairaland for various reasons. Some are not professionals. The proper usage of English, therefore, is not of the utmost importance to some of them whilst communicating on this forum. Note, that I said on this forum, not necessarily in their day to day business.

Admittedly it is true that some people may suffer the occasional lapse of making typo graphical errors. Some are passively lazy to proof read what they have written. Some will blatantly, and unashamedly, spew grammatical scud missiles. However, it is important to understand that a poster's inability to construct sound English should not be used as a yardstick to judge their intellect or lack of it. A poster may not be able to express himself lucidly, but does that make that person devoid of imagination which is by far, more superior to the acquisition of knowledge?

Let me bring up a case in point. In his time, some people questioned Henry Ford's intelligence positing that whilst he may possess considerable specialised knowledge, he was in the main, ignorant. He responded by saying he could summon to his aid, with a push of the button, people who can answer any question he desires to ask concerning his business. Therefore, why should he clutter up his mind with general knowledge when he has people who can supply all the knowledge he requires.

The point being made here should not be lost on you. Yes, it is good to express oneself better when communicating in English. But do you know why the French and Chinese especially, favour their own mother tongue than English language when communicating at some formal occasions? Perhaps, it may also interest you to note that there are some white English forums where some of the written English will make you cringe with embarrassment. Mind you, the fact that they are sons of the soil is flagrantly inexcusable.

In passing, I would like you to prove openly why you think this statement,  "Have you ever sit"is grammatically incorrect. We all know it is wrongly worded. What I need you to point out, and justify, is what makes the grammatical syntax in the sentence to be out of place. Besides, with all our "grammar" and intellectuals, has it made our nation any better? I refer to those on ground and not in the Diaspora. At what expense have we even added value to our national heritage when some Nigerians can speak English fluently, but are shockingly deficient in their own mother tongue?

Dear Rubbermaid,What a good observation you have made but a wrong approach to it.I personaally appreciate your observation, but as you know, this is a puplic forum comprising people from differnt backgrounds, enough care should be taken in the choice of words we make. This has nothing to do with your grammaticality, but politeness in communication.Niralanders,i would apologise on her behalf, please forgive her,"To err is human,To forgive is divine".One love!!!

rubbermaid or claymaid whatever you think you are or the level of education you've attained in life that does not in any way give you an edge over others. Some in this thread started from the government school and you can attest the level of decay/rot in our educational system. If you do understand the message conveyed then I've communicated.

Secondly, why don't you go yank off the eyes/mouth of Chinese,Japanese/Germans who don't speak english but the level of development in those countries is worth emulating.

it's a free world, there is freedom of expression, use of language et al.
