Operatives of the State Security Service have arrested the wife of Mallam Abubakar Shekau, who is believed to be the leader of the Boko Haram sect.

Shekau, who succeeded the late leader of the Islamist group, Mohammed Yusuf, has been identified as a potent force behind the sect’s violent attacks.

Shekau’s wife was reportedly apprehended last Saturday along with her seven-month-old infant at their Kano residence.

Sources told our correspondent on Wednesday that the woman and her son were taken to the SSS Headquarters in Abuja later in the day.

"The woman (Shekau’s wife) was picked up at a house in Kano by SSS operatives and whisked away to Abuja on Saturday. I think the security agencies are getting close to catching Shekau and when they do, that would mark the beginning of the end for Boko Haram," a security source said.

Shekau, who is on the wanted list of security agencies along with the alleged mastermind of the United Nations office blast, Mamman Nur, had been on the run.

The SSS had offered N25m reward for anybody who could provide information that could lead to the arrest of Nur for his involvement in the attack which claimed 23 lives.

But in spite of spirited attempts to catch the two Boko Haram leaders, Shekau and Nur had managed to elude security agencies and they have continued to direct the violent activities of the sect from hiding.

The SSS could not be reached for more information on the arrest as calls and a text message to the agency’s Deputy Director, Public Relations and Media, Marilyn Ogar, were not answered.

Meanwhile, the Special Task Force on security in Jos, ‘Operation Safe Haven’ has said it has no plans to close down businesses and government activities in Jos from December 21 over a rumour that the city could be attacked.

Never knew it was possible to "arrest" a 7-month old infant shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked No wonder Boko Haram keeps getting the better of these desperados masquerading as an "intelligence agency".

SSS want to justify the N900bn defence budget,

So after you've water boarded the wife and infant will you be any closer to putting down Boko Haram. And was it wife no.1 you have or wife no.4? After all Boko Haram are old school.

Being reasonable help alot, that wife may have some useful info about her guy but maybe after enough brutal interrogation, as usual. As for the 900billion for security? That na ''army arrangeement'' according to fela.

GEJ was right
'boko haram will soon fade away'.
And we are on the verge of it.
The woman and the 7 month old mujahdeen supports the righteous cause.
They should be shown the road to 72 virgins(for the boy) and 72 uncircumcised teenage boys for the mum.
This will make the boko haram leader feel the full impact of the righteous cause and the pain of the families of the people killed in the bomb blasts.

Re: Why Should SSS Arrests Boko Haram Leader’s Wife & Son? by Koolking(m): 12:21pm On Dec 16, 2011
Rubbish! I bet this woman is as good as not getting arrested. Even if she knows the activities of the husband, what gives the sss the impetus that she would betray the husband? If it was that simple to get to terrorist leaders through the wives, USA would have arrested Osama Bin Laden's wife just after 9/11 massacre. It worth tryn any way, but to me, it is futile and unprofessional.

As long as they are not maltreated or tortured, it's not entirely a bad idea. However, the danger is that Boko Haram recruiters might use the outrage over the "injustice" of this arrest to convince more people to join Boko Haram.  I think you need to win the propaganda war to beat terrorism.
Re: Why Should SSS Arrests Boko Haram Leader’s Wife & Son? by hercules07: 12:39pm On Dec 16, 2011
It is a bad idea, there is a law against that in Lagos and I presume in Nigeria, how will you guys like to be arrested for crimes committed by your relatives?

IT COULD MAKE THEIR TASK A BIT EASY IF THEY TRY AND INVESTIGATE SOME NAIRALAND DIE HARD JIHAD SUPPORTERS LIKE ALHJ_HARAM AND COs ONLINE AND OFFLINE ACTIVITIES,THOSE "GUNKIS" WHO ALWAYS MAKE ARGUMENTS IN DEFENCE OF BOKO HARAM,FULANI HERDSMEN AND THEIR UNNECESSARY ATTACKS ON INNOCENT AND PEACE LOVING CITIZENS,AS A MATTER OF URGENCY SHOULD BE ON THE WATCH LIST FOR EVERY MOVE AND STEP THEY TAKE.WHO COULD HAVE EVEN THOUGHT THAT A SPOILT CHILD LIKE MUTALAB WHOSE THIEVING FATHER HELPED TO DEPRIVED MANY NIGERIANS OF COMMON BASICS THINGS IN LIFE,IN ORDER TO MAKE HIM MUTALAB TO LIVE THE LIFE OF A REAL PRINCE IN OVERSEAS COULD ONE DAY DECIDE TO HIDE A BOMB IN HIS BLOKOS AND BLOW UP AN AIR PLANE COS OF THE HATE HE HAS AGAINST HUMANITY,CAN ANYBODY TELL ME THAT MUTALAB DID NOT OR DOES NOT HAVE NAIRALAND IDs TO SPREAD HATE AND ARGUE IN DEFENCE OF EVIL JIHADIST?                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        WAS/IS HE NOT A REGULAR NLDER?

I agree with this 100%.

It is not unusual for the family members of terrorists to be arrested, interrogated or even killed, as in Bin Ladens case.

When the CIA targetted Bin Ladens family with fake vaccination campaigns to obtain DNA, women and kids were the target: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2013668/CIA-plotted-trap-Osama-bin-Ladens-DNA-fake-vaccination-programme-Pakistan.html

This is what happened to the members of the Bin Laden family that were not shot dead (those shot dead included a child):

One survivor, possibly one of bin Laden’s sons, was captured by the Americans and taken away with the special forces in a helicopter.

Eight or nine other children who may also be bin Laden’s relatives were arrested by Pakistani forces.

According to the ISI official, all the survivors had their hands tied by the Americans before the elite US Navy Seals’ team left.

The relatives who survived the raid - one of bin Laden’s wives and the children - will be interrogated and then probably turned over to their countries of origin, and not the United States, in accordance with Pakistani law, ISI sources said.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/al-qaeda/8491826/Osama-bin-Laden-captured-alive-before-being-shot-in-front-of-family.html

The moral of the story is; don't belong in the family of a terrorist, or even better, rat on them before the security services get you.

osama's wives had been kept under watch since 9/11,
except the one that was used to locate him.

I support their temporary arrest and humane interrogation, but I don't support torture or murder. That's wrong.

Why should she be arrested if she is not a member, and even if she is arrested, she should be charged to court immediately, I can not believe people are supporting this, this is a flagrant abuse of her human rights, talkless of a 7 month old baby.

this is highly unprofessional. imagine the sss even went on air announcing this while fully aware of suicidal nature of d group!

and even announcing where they took the duo to.

it doesn't make sense and looks like the sss is acting a one man's show.

simple reflection over terrorists operations will tell u dat it is simply a wrong tactic.

Ok.
For those screaming blue murder and vehemently opposed to the detainment of the woman, please give other options or avenues which the authorities can use to trace the suspect?
This is basic law enforcement routine - where/who do you reckon should be their first point of contact other than family, friends and other known close associates who are immediately accessible. . . . . .!

By the way, there has been no outright mention of torture, interrogation, imprisonment or maltreatment, for all we know the lady might well be lounging in Aso Rock or some luxury villa somewhere.

It may look somehow, but i think if it is within the law and could also help them do their findings for us all to stay in peace (and not in pieces). It's okay.
