The level and structure of the educational system will be one of the determinants of the future of the country. Unfortunately, the education system in Nigeria as a whole is really in bad shape. As someone in IT and a background in Computer Science, I have come across quite a number of Computer Science graduates from several Universities in Nigeria that do NOT know jack about computer science/programming. Some actually never used a computer. It's absolutely beyond me how a graduate in computer Science, a field that is very practical/hands-on based, has never done any programming. Bottom line - an IT degree (an a whole lot of other fields) from Nigeria basically means nothing here. They all pretty much have to start from scratch. |

| Re: United Kingdom Blacklists Nigerian Universities by jedisco(m): 9:56pm On Dec 21, 2011 |
most of this schools had problems because of over admitting students. I think majority of the schools are from the SE mainly because of the importance Igbo people attach to medicine leading to excess pressure on their schools. Unfortunately although their accreditation has been returned, white man no wan hear dat one |

So much ignorance on display here, some are already throwing parties that their schs or alma mater wasnt there, while the usual bigots try to unleash their arsenals. So much for educated and supposedly intelligent peeps. As sagamit will say, products of failed education system pointing @ others with their filty hands. Reading through a topic properly is now an uphill task, ppl only read tru d topic n rush to spew rubbish. NIGERIANS READ! |

I'm not surprised that UNN is on the list. Their medical school is overpopulated. This might be due to greed or due to reasons best known to VC, Provost or Dean. The origin of the problem can be traced back to the administration of Prof. Ginigeme Mbanefo as the VC. Towards the end of his tenure in 2004, he admitted 440 students into Med/Surg. Half of them failed 1 or more first year courses and have to repeat the session the school rule dictates. They went ahead to incorporate more than 100 through direct entry(mostly consultants children) into an already swollen class, bringing the population to more than 320. Thereafter, roughly 170 medical students who had 2nd MB issues joined the class to bring the population to over 490. They tried unsuccessfully to control the population of the class, but failed. One of the reason being that the class can boast of an array of brilliant students who passes their exams easily. They introduced some stringent measure to control the population of the class by raising the standard. Still it fell short. They resorted to victimisation of student through their subjective clinical exams. The climax of their action resulted in more than 320 candidates being eligible to write 5th MB. Through their crooked means, they squeezed 120 doctors out. Most of their backlog of more than 200 were pushed out during the 5th MB re-sit exam in september 2010. This raised an eyebrow among the officials of MDCN. They intervened and slammed their hammer on the overpopulated class below by withdrawing their accreditation. The irony of the matter is that the set that this matter is traced to have graduated and are either doing their internship or serving. It's really unfortunate that graduates of Lion's republic are immersed in this mess. SMH ![]() |

I checked both avicenna (for plab) and the nigerian medical and dental council websites, and there's actually no reason for the panicking going on. The suspension is due to overcrowding or overadmitting students. Its very embarassing to find UNN in particualr on that list- they've had their med school since 1969 or so. Their admission quota is supposed to be about 100 or so- certainly not more than 150 or 180. I just looked it up some minutes ago. |
| Re: United Kingdom Blacklists Nigerian Universities by tpia@: 11:40pm On Dec 21, 2011 |
The schools involved can get their accreditation back within 12 months if they follow the original accrediting guidelines. |
| Re: United Kingdom Blacklists Nigerian Universities by Chartey(m): 11:47pm On Dec 21, 2011 |
Most schools have accreditation probs in medicine. My school(ABU) couldn't even admit for med this yr and about half of 200level students may be asked to withdraw despite passing exams. The schools admit too many students. It's not even about corruption in admission, most students are qualified, but the training capacities of the schs are weak due to the lack of facilities. Unilorin seems to have partially overcome some of these problem, though. It's surprising people dont regard schs in d north much but the fact that schs like abu, buk, unimaid, udu didn't make that list suggests uni edu quality may be higher in the north. |

I tink all Nig students, NUC, all Nig univ, ASUU, Ministry of Education, Fed Govt need 2sit up and remould the education sector, doe am wondering if it will ever materialize evn wen FGN itself is corrupt. ![]() First, the GMC of UK were NOT explicit with deir reason. if u ask me, I'l say dt majority of deir doc r prob from the blacklistd Univ & dey see it as a serious threat. I am a proud super-lioness (UNN) anyday. UNN Acada is standard&bliv me, we r nt livin on past glory. d only exception is dat same old tins r bein taught(general Nig edu sys problem) we nid 2folo up with current trend. Who says UI's best ? cme let me tell u of d gruesome mistk dat led 2d amputation of an infant's upper limb last month, or is it UNILAG mayb wen pop of med grad increase dey'll join d list.lol.UNIBEN, evn with d sickle cell breaktru, is also on d list. kikichris:So because your school, lost its accreditation, you are now trying to pick holes in other schools! Well i can assure you that UNILAG will never fall in that category of schools because despite the fact that UNILAG receives the highest no of applications in the country, the University of Lagos maintains its standard as its not propelled by the greed to collect students fees, so stop beefing! BTW, if u fall ill, don't fail to come by LUTH, we'll be delighted to care u. LOL |

it is not unexpected,UNN and uniben should cover their heads in shame, this is what happens when ignorami are in charge of academic affairs. UNIBEN's greatest export to uk is James Onanaefe IBORI,the man even at the height of his controversial criminal antecedents, the school went on to humour him with the privilege of invitation to deliver a CONVOCATION SPEECH! This uniben school is so infantile and stupidly-run to the extent that the appointment of the university VC was done in the Oba of Benin's palace based purely on a silly 'benin son of the soil' criteria instead of tested scholarship and administrative/leadership competence.Imagine a university VC appointed on such puerile criteria. UNN is the most foolish of the first generation unis, imagine the controversial way the school has been doling out professorship apointment.First was Dora Akunyili, who while still holding a political appointment, almost a decade away from scholarly works and the university, got 'promoted' to rank of professor! This same silly school embarrased itself and its alumni by 'dashing' professorship to Mrs Ndi Onyuike-okereke,former NSE-DG,this silly school 'sold' the title to a woman who was never in the employ of the schoolnever lectured or carried out any research work as an academic staff member of the institution and this silly school never bothered to investigate the authenticity of the Phd being bandied by the woman, events later confirmed that the phd can not be substantiated.Yet,the senate of the school kept mum over this serious issue!! What Late Prof. Jelili Omotola did in UNILAG did not even come close to this, yet all hell was let loose!Even the UNILAG Korean study centre he facilitated was shut down permanently by the University Senate and his tenure technically ended. The man was seriously dealt with by the University senate! This is how matured Universities are run!Nobody will come to UNILAG,OAU or UI and say he is the 'palace candidate for VC' and anybody will take him serious. The other schools are just remedial centres, they should just keep quiet, that they ve been busy producing killer-doctors all the while did not escape serious nations like UK. |

Almustee: When you people attend proper western Universities (not all those college college wey full USA), especially in western and northern Europe, you will know that all those universities in Nigeria, from UNN, to UNILAG to ABU are all massively glorified secondary schools and are nothing to write home about, internationally. |
