Nigerian Company Selling Kerosene To Airlines As Jet Fuel! by Nobody: 7:31pm On Dec 21, 2011

DPK also known as Kerosene is always scarce to find in Nigeria

By SaharaReporters, New York

The safety of air travel in Nigeria is in question again. In a petition sent on December 5 to the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, the Major Oil Marketers Association (MOMAN) alleges that some unscrupulous Nigerians are selling kerosene meant for domestic consumption (DPK) to aviation operators as jet fuel (Jet A1).

And SaharaReporters has learned that SAHARA ENERGY LTD, which is the monopoly importer of DPK on behalf of the NNPC, is one of the companies responsible for passing off DPK to such airlines as Arik Air, Chachangi Airlines, Air Nigeria, DANA Air and Associated Airlines as aviation fuel, making a staggering monthly profit of USD43million in the process.

SAHARA ENERGY LTD, which is  owned by Tope Sonubi and Tonye Cole, perpetrates the dangerous but profitable scam through its SO Aviation subsidiary, and it makes its vast profits by taking advantage of its position to sell the product, which it obtains from the NNPC at only N40.90k per litre, to the airlines as imported aviation fuel at N152 per litre.

But they are not the same product.  While Jet A1 and DPK are similar products, said MOMAN in its petition, they possess “totally different specifications and require different levels of handling, transportation and storage infrastructure” expertise possessed by members of MOMAN who are duly audited annually and certified by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Joint Inspection Group (JIG).”

As a result, “The final product dispensed into the aircraft meets DFSTAN and AFRQJOS standards,” MOMAN said.

Our investigations have further shown that international airlines such as British Airways, Emirates, KLM and Lufthansa refuse to purchase Aviation fuel from SO Aviation, out of concern for established standards and safety.

Checks in the international market, particularly in the Lloyds has also confirmed that SAHARA ENERGY has not imported Aviation fuel in recent times solely for sale to airline operators in Nigeria.

SaharaReporters has not been able to confirm if the Minister for Petroleum Resources has taken any actions in response to the petition in order to save the country further air tragedies.
In one of its two recommendations in MOMAN’s petition to her, it asked that the Petroleum Products Marketing Company (PPMC) share with the association all the required information on DPK PFIs being issued monthly so as to ensure adequate tracking of the supplies from the Mother Vessels to the eventual points of sale. In return, MOMAN would provide that information to the PPMC for their records.

This' not a funny matter and we shdnt trivialize this subject especially those of us that travels within the country by air.

This Nigeria as a country is really a case study. Close to 10 cabals in the importation of PMS are still milking the nation through subsidy claims, yet the NNPC, FG, nor EFCC have been able to have a crack down on them thus corruption in the downstream sector has eaten deep beyong controllable measures.

Now Just one company has decided to toy with the lives of air travellers by risking safety of lives for profit. Just one company has chosen to send us back to the era of plane crash.

I hope the corrupt dezeani, NNPC officials and NCAA would act fast cos this could potend danger.

I really feel so sorry for Nigeria.

Where's mrs rebranding of this administration?

As the proud owner of a brand new $25million Gulfstream4 luxury jet, Pastor Eunuch Adejale need not be concerned if his aircraft is "accidentally" filled up with cooking kerosene rather than with jet fuel, since Big Daddy has already invented a car whose engine reportedly ran for 200 miles with NO fuel other than prayer.

With such a proven background in alternative fuel MODALITIES, similar prayers can easily be deployed as needed by Pastor Adebole, for the purpose of converting into Jet-A1 fuel ANY liquid piped into the tanks of his bird.

Are you new in this country ? Diversion is an old thing and even the regulatory agencies are aware of it.If you've ever been to escravos or forcados, you will know what I'm talking about.

Are we then guaranteed that once there's deregulation as currently being championed by the FG, diversion/smuggling is gonna be a thing of the past?

Now the Govt is saying deregulation will put a check to these illegal activities

I think it's bull shit news anyway.

Why would an airline spend so much money to buy a plane so that some crappy company can give them rubbish fuel,

Even we that drive motor for road, can't allow it, so, if the airline allow it, then it's their cup of tea,

Wonderment.        So that is what the whole "Big Daddy G.O._" thang is all about.   Putting on my conical thinking cap, I assume that the equation to which you refer is as follows :  GO + D = GOD.    This is very profound, and I think I am about to have a Jeeeeeesus moment.

Anyways, how touching it is of our Big Daddy Papa GoD, to try and hide his true identity.    Well, after much reflection and consultation, the official response can only be as follows:

Verily I sayeth unto thee Pastor Eunuch, that we, the esteemed executive membership of the Holy Slap Survivors League, do hereby bestoweth you with thine TRUE title of Mini-God of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, with all rights and privileges concomitant therein.

May thine Gulfstream4 luxury corporate jet continue to soar the heavens under the smooth power of twin turbines fueled with ONLY the finest stove kerosene or local gin available in thine Kingdom of Nigeria, and may thine pilot's precision never falter as he fires air-to-surface missiles wherever disgruntled elements lurk on the ground far below.

OP,

Have you ever bothered to ask yourself what "dual purpose" in the DPK stands for?

There are three grades of kerosene:

ATK (aviation type kerosene which is essentially Jet A1)
HHK (household kerosene)
DPK (dual purpose kerosene which can be used as domestic cooking fuel and can be modified for aviation use).

Have you heard that any aircraft has crashed recently because they used DPK?

It is always proper for people to study situations and get their facts straight before publishing.

That said, it is unethical to source DPK locally at N40.90 (NNPC price) and sell the same as Aviation kerosene (Jet A1). At the end of the day, the high air fares being paid by passengers is the end-result of such practices.

This may be one of the propaganda from Sahara Reporters. We really need to be careful with the news we read and hear. I doubt if a company like Sahara would do such thing knowing well that the core value of the Aviation business is SAFETY.
Re: Nigerian Company Selling Kerosene To Airlines As Jet Fuel! by Abagworo(m): 11:55am On Dec 22, 2011
Dpk and Atk can be used by any air craft. Dpk does not in anyway compromise the safety of an aircraft but the problem here is the economic sabotage. This is part of the reason why subsidy removal is very important.

Let us analyse the fraud being perpetuated by Sahara Oil. They import Dpk at a landing and profit cost of 130 Naira per liter and Government pays them 90 Naira as subsidy. That way they have already made profit and recovered the money invested. The fraud is that rather than sell to the local consumers at 40 Naira, they still went ahead to sell at more than 130 Naira to the airlines thereby making another profit of 90 Naira per liter.
