Buhari: Chaos looms

[Retired Gen. Muhammadu Buhari speaks to journalists at the Supreme Court, Abuja, yesterday. ]

Former head of state Muhammadu Buhari yesterday said the country is sliding into total breakdown of law and order because of injustice, bad governance and “massive and mindless” stealing of public resources.
In a bluntly worded statement he personally signed, in reaction to the Supreme Court judgment dismissing his party’s petition against the presidential election, General Buhari said Nigeria was “now a fractured society, corruption everywhere, violence everywhere, a sense of helplessness and hopelessness nearly everywhere.”

He said unless the leaders of the country move fast to arrest the situation, chaos would set in and there would be breakdown of law and order.

But he said it does not look like the leaders are concerned with the grave situation, as while “the country is sliding into this chaotic state, PDP governments at the centre and in the states are engaged in massive and mindless plunder of the country’s resources in total disregard of the suffering masses.”

“The country now is in an emergency situation. Law and order can break down at any time. Those in charge of the country should be warned that promises and sweet words are no substitute for practical action. To avert the looming chaos in the New Year, immediate steps should be taken to drastically reduce the cost of governance in the three tiers of government.”

Buhari detailed the governance costs he wanted slashed: “Salaries and especially allowances should be drastically reduced; security votes should be abolished – not increased as the 2012 Budget has done. Votes for the Armed forces, Police and Security Services should be transparent and accountable; foreign travel and estacodes should be stopped for at least six months other than for the Presidency, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and medical emergencies. Government House expenses in all the states should be drastically reduced, foreign travel suspended for a while. The National Assembly should give a lead in reducing their allowances substantially and stopping their foreign travels. These savings should be applied to education, infrastructure and agriculture with emphasis on youth employment through meaningful and practical emergency programmes. The public will see through any cosmetic or token gestures and will not tolerate a continuation of status quo. Corruption and plunder are the root causes of unemployment, insecurity, violence and unrest.”

He added: “If all hands are on deck to help save our country from imminent collapse we should stabilize. When that happens Nigeria should take a close look at the country’s structure in a calm and unemotional atmosphere. Hopefully we may come to a better form of government to see Nigeria through the next 50 years.”

Buhari unsuccessfully contested for president in the April election on CPC’s platform, and his party challenged the results at the tribunal, even though he personally refused to join the case. The Court of Appeal earlier dismissed the petition for failing to convincingly show that the elections were rigged, and yesterday the Supreme Court concurred.

On yesterday’s judgement, Buhari said: “All who witnessed the conduct of the 2011 elections would know that this decision of the Supreme Court is politically motivated and has little judicial content.”

He said, “This Supreme Court has proved no better than the Supreme Courts of 2003 and 2007” having toed a similar line of dismissing the election petition.

Buhari said this year’s election “eclipsed all the other elections in the depth and scope of forgery and rigging.”

He criticised INEC chairman Attahiru Jega, who he said “was touted as competent and a man of integrity. He has proved neither.”

Indeed. If he carries on listening to 'friends' he is on course to be the worst President in History. As many of us screamed non-stop before the elections, what needs to be done to pull Nigeria back from the brink , and Buhari indeed lays out some of it clearly here, is not Rocket science. The challenge was always to ensure we gained a president who had the bravery, political will and desire to do the right things. We all know the "right things" , without doubt, will affect the interest of the AGIPs. We therefore needed someone who does not care about those Vultures. Instead we gained their champion and number 1 'Voltron' as President. Terrible really.

Only those eating from thesame pot with the demonic evil blood thirsty PDP wont see the truth in this summation.

What will cost GEJ to bring Buhari on board? Even as mere anti-corruption lord? Since Nigerians have rejected him as a president?

God bless Gen. Buhari and Pastor Tunde Bakare cool

Nigeria will defeat the evil. I believe the citizens needs to start demanding answers to some tough questions. It is not enough to complain on blogs and scream on radios. There is another option,

I am not a buhari fan but now I am grieving that we are stuck with this GEJ for another 3 years.I pray for the sake of our children that the looming anarchy doesn't overwhelm us

nku5:

Indeed. Those who are not into decieving themselves will be very worried about GEJ's total lack of ability to even minimally thrive at this level let alone excel. We can all remember that an insecure GEJ, as soon as he was made acting President, ran to embrace all the AGIPs in the land who hid under the bed while he was being persecuted by Aondoakaa et al. GEJ ignored those who bravely spoke and acted in his defense and , most tragically, he ignored doing what is best for Nigerians.

We saw GEJ assimilate Dokpesi into his campaign team. OBJ and Anenih quickly became his 'trusted' advisors. He disappointingly and fawningly referred to IBB as a "father" and made desperate overtures to Atiku and those he ordinarily should shun because of how they represent the old order who have caused all our woes.

Till today, the story is the same. Rather than for GEJ to do what Buhari suggests above, he is busy meeting emirs and "stakeholders" in the clearest signal that, despite the fresh air tag, we have an old school Dinosaur for a President who still thinks that Nigeria is only about 'strong' men. This is what will bring GEJ down i.e the foolish, clueless and historically visionless mentality , combined with his own inferiority complex, that makes him believe he must always grovel to the "owners of Nigeria".

In GEJ we have a very poor student of politics and history who is not bright enough to see that , increasingly, power is now belonging to the ordinary African more and more. It is them who must be pacified, courted and developed ASAP. Not the elite dinosaur who have always been part of all the problems facing Nigeria to include this current Boko Haram mess.

Brilliant summation!

"Grovel" is the word for what GEJ has been doing and to the wrong persons too. Interestingly, these people will NEVER accept him into their ranks but rather will continue to look down on him. That chip on his shoulder (inferiority complex) bodes. Evil for Nigeria

This is precisely the crux of the matter. GEJ is a very poor politician. It would be very difficult to show even a single pro-people policy/action of GEJ, in almost two years as substantive President, yet it is tediously easy to see that most decisions GEJ has made directly assists the continuation of "business as usual" for the small amount of folks taking Nigeria for a ride.

To boot, he is also weak and higly inept politically. In short , after the Yar Adua debacle, and for what the "strong men grab it all" style of politics from OBJ, IBB and Abacha had done to our Nation, we deserved better than this man. We deserved a champion of the masses i.e a temporary socialist instead , and cruelly, we gained an ultra-conservative, materialistic and elitist President who glorifies and promotes capitalists and monopolists into influential positions. We deserved a brave, austere and disciplined President totally consumed with the notion of equity for all Nigerians. Sadly, we got GEJ.
Re: Chaos looms - Buhari by sheyguy: 9:06pm On Dec 29, 2011
Hmmm . . . that's some word from Buhari . . . I expect Gej to be wise and listen to these advice . . . The man has surrounded himself with the wrong pple.
Re: Chaos looms - Buhari by VoodooDoll(m): 11:33pm On Dec 29, 2011
GEJ is the burden Nigerians have to bear until 2015. PDP is currently riding Nigerians like we are donkeys, one day the donkey will react.

When a country is full of f00ls who can not see behind their noses, there is no hope.
You can call him whatever you want, but Buhari remains very loyal to this nation and Nigerians more than any leader out there today.
Our problems in Nigeria are pretty much visible and solutions to these problems are even clearer, but the challenge we continue to face is being able to be smart and sincere enough to elect the right candidate.

Believe it or not, if it's up to Jonathan, the dude is ready to step aside. He is mentally and physically tired.
He knows more than anyone else that he doesn't have what it takes to move this country forward. He doesn't have the background, experience or skills to lead Nigeria at this time effectively and efficiently.

And the sad part of it all, is the fact that we all knew it, but still went ahead like f00ls to select a pot with a big hole.

Nigeria missed out indeed.

Contrary to popular opinion, the masses of Nigeria did not select Jonathan, the elites did.

The masses have no choice yet in selecting leaders in Nigeria. Sorry.

How can our votes count when we still have pin heads on this forum talking about how God has given us Goodluck to lead this nation?
It is totally despicable in this day and age that anyone still openly comes out to support this dum dum. It is ridiculous and makes me sick.

Of course, leadership is not for everybody, Jonathan is better off being a Chemistry professor and not a president.
He doesn't have the stamina, guts, experience or skills to effectively fight these vultures. And this is why we are here today with absolutely nothing done.

Nigeria missed out indeed.

yep, put it seems to me that a lot of middle class/white collar workers in my age bracket voted buhari.

i keep getting suprised at work, when drawn into conversations with people about politics - some who have even shown animosity towards muslims - and they say they voted buhari , they dragged with their folks etal - because they understood that nothing good could come out of gej.

i guess when you work for a living in a corporate environment, you see clearly what happens when incompetents are elevated.

If this country is to move forward, a Muslim Hausa Fulani must not be elected President in the next 50years

We have Muslims in the South West who can be President or Christains in the North Central who can be voted.

Electing a Muslim Hausa Fulani will be a recipe to catalysis!

Every time I try to think about the problems and solution to this country, my mind is overwhelmed by the sheer complexity and massive obstacles posed by both elite and the masses. But I must give it to buhari that he has summarily and concisely laid out pathway to move the country from here to the nxt level. Even the most jaundiced mind will agree that the following is a way to start.
Gbawe:

To avert the looming chaos in the New Year, immediate steps should be taken to drastically reduce the cost of governance in the three tiers of government.”

Buhari detailed the governance costs he wanted slashed: “Salaries and especially allowances should be drastically reduced; security votes should be abolished – not increased as the 2012 Budget has done.
