Boko Haram members may face crimes against humanity – UN

BY SAM EYOBOKA,  INNOCENT  ANABA & UDUMA KALU

Geneva — United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms Navi Pillay, has warned that members of the Islamic sect, Boko Haram, who have claimed responsibility for series of bomb attacks in Nigeria leading to loss of lives could be guilty of crimes against humanity if they are judged to have carried out systematic attacks on religious targets.

The UN chief gave the warning as the National President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor berated governors from the southern part of the country who he said were yet to see the need to make deliberate efforts to engage their northern counterparts on ways to end the killings.

According to the UN statement, “members of Boko Haram and other groups and entities, if judged to have committed widespread or systematic attacks against a civilian population, including on grounds such as religion or ethnicity, could be found guilty of crimes against humanity.

Deliberate acts leading to population ‘cleansing’ on grounds of religion or ethnicity would also amount to a crime against humanity,”

The statement added: “It is essential that the country’s leadership, and especially its Muslim and Christian leaders, join forces to unequivocally condemn all violence, including retaliation, and encourage their followers to identify and help arrest all those involved in killings and other acts of violence that have been taking place.”

Meanwhile, Pastor Oritsejafor, who was piqued by the vandalisation of five churches in Gusau, Zamfara State in the guise of oil subsidy protest, said several Nigerian leaders, including the leadership of Labour and civil society coalition, owe this country an explanation for their conspiracy of silence while innocent Nigerians are being killed like animals in the North.

Ebenezer Baptist Church, Chapel of Grace, C and S Church, COCIN Church and CAC, all in Gangaren Yerima area of Gusau, were vandalised while a pastor was molested by people said to be protesting hike in oil prices.

Said he: “I am really ashamed at southern governors whose citizens are daily being mauled down by a group of Islamic fundamentalists who are hell bent on annihilating Christians from the nation without any attempt to engage their northern counterparts on ways to end the madness.

“I am really ashamed. Its amazing the kind of publicity the Borno State governor gave to the payment of N100 million compensation to the family of late Yussuff’s father-in-law.

“We were all witnesses to how this same Yussuff killed Rev. Orji like an animal in Maiduguri in 2009. Nobody in this country has thought of paying any compensation to the late reverend’s family to date nor rebuild the churches that are being burnt everywhere,” Oritsejafor said, adding that he had to relocate the man’s widow from Borno State for fear that her life also be in danger.

According to the CAN helmsman, “these are some of the injustices and imbalances we have been talking about. Who needs compensation? Is it the sponsored attacker or the victim of the attack who very often loses everything? We have, to no avail, consistently called on the Borno State government to pay adequate compensation to victims of the various attacks in that part of the country.”

Stating that he sympathised with the pains of the Nigerian people who are currently going through harsh economic conditions as a result of fuel subsidy removal, the CAN president said if the House of Representatives truly love the nation they should have demonstrated it by holding a special session to end the growing menace of terrorism in the country.

“Much as I identify with the pains of Nigerians at this dark moment of the nation’s history, I think those guys were on an ego trip, otherwise the security situation in the country should have been their number one priority.

“They reconvened a special plenary because of fuel subsidy removal as if the lives of those being killed don’t matter to them. If the government reverts to N65 who will buy the fuel—the dead or the living? How can the National Assembly be so insensitive to the plight of Christians who are being killed like animals daily?

“Are they by their silence over the security challenges occasioned by Boko Haram, saying that the Christians have no stake in the Nigerian project? The House was quick to reconvene on Sunday to deliberate on oil subsidy, why haven’t they taken one Friday to find ways to end the killings in the North?” Oritsejafor asked.

He maintained that the House was only playing to gallery because “the security situation in the North especially with Boko Haram giving an ultimatum to southerners to quit the North and vice versa is a much more serious issue than the oil subsidy removal because it is a threat to the corporate existence of the nation”.

It will be recalled that the CAN president resettled late Rev Orji’s widow who was pregnant at the time her husband was slaughtered, and gave the children scholarship in addition to giving her a car and money to start a new business.

The UN statement is VERY IMPORTANT because it should help to guide international opinion on the Nigerian problem, and help dissuade some evil international conspirators from siding with the North if ever a shooting war starts.
Re: Boko Haram Members May Face Crimes Against Humanity – UN by NegroNtns(m): 6:00am On Jan 13, 2012
I understand.  In your mind the North is bokoharam, to the international parties you depend on for support, the North is separate from boko.  How do you prove membership in boko and how do you assess the crimes and the perpetrators involvement.  Where do you go to exact penalty against a faceless non-sovereign entity?  This is not a state, this is a grassroot movement fighting a domestic war.  The Federal Government of Nigeria has not given it international status, so why believe UN in this foolish statement for trying to intrnationalize it?

You all take UN serious.  UN only made this statement to console spirits. . . . to remind of its own legitimacy as the protector of humanity.  Dont expect anything serious from this people.  Did you not see Sudan?  Bashir told UN to go to h_ll after they declared him wanted for war crimes against humanity.  Well, during the independence of South Sudan, Bashir was in the meeting with UN delegates to sign the accord and treaty.  Why didnt they arrest him. . . .heck, why did they even recognize his presence and signature at all?

don't mind the war drunk fellow. Of all things to deduce from the article, his reversed engineered brain only tot of how to use the UN in time of war. Some people are so desperate for conflict these days they even disguise as BH to commit crime under the BH franchise.
Re: Boko Haram Members May Face Crimes Against Humanity – UN by kettykin: 6:27am On Jan 13, 2012
this is a good step in the right direction, the igbos should follow it up with a presentation to the european union, asean, nato, g8, wcc, muslim world , arab world , india, china japan, the world has started istening, a body or committee for displaced igbos should be formed, the war has just started, the government of britain and russia should be dragged before icc for crime against igbo race , eminent lawyers of igbo origin should be involved . This should be made more elaborate than the occupy lagos show.
Re: Boko Haram Members May Face Crimes Against Humanity – UN by Onlytruth(m): 6:29am On Jan 13, 2012
Killing of unarmed innocent civilians is a WAR CRIME/crimes against humanity. ALL crimes against humanity are INTERNATIONAL crimes, whether committed by a sovereign state or a rogue organization.
Only a fool would think this statement irrelevant. Do I expect the UN to fight for me? NOPE.
But, I would save this statement for the judgement day. PERIOD. cool

This formal statement by the United Nations is aimed SQUARELY at the prime instigator and financier of the Boko Haram terrorist gang, namely our very own perennial election LOSER, Ayatollah Momod Buhari Bin Laden, for it is he who made repeated PUBLIC statements specifically encouraging his virgin-seeking followers to "LYNCH" those deemed to have contributed to Buhari's most recent defeat at the presidential polls in Nigeria.

The legal definition of the word "LYNCH" refers to the wanton murder of victims by disorganized mobs of killers,  and that, boys and girls, is the very human rights violation which has been proudly instigated by Momod Buhari, who also has never missed a chance to crow with delight in the aftermath of every slaughter carried out by his bloodthirsty hordes of screaming fundamentalist savages.

The United Nations works hand-in-hand with the International Criminal Court, so there is now absolutely NO question that JUSTICE is about to be visited on Nigeria's fugitive genocide organizer, Ayatollah Momod Buhari Bin Laden, who will have no place to run when formal indictments lead to international arrest warrants, trial and ultimately a well-deserved and long-overdue life jail sentence.    The wheels of justice may turn slowly, but once they are in motion, there will be no preventing the roundup and incarceration of ALL human rights violators, particularly those guilty of leadership roles in documented hate crimes committed for political or religious reasons.
Re: Boko Haram Members May Face Crimes Against Humanity – UN by BIGERBOY1: 6:40am On Jan 13, 2012
It will be narrow minded or outright sinister to make this only an Igbo thing. What happens to the other victims? Yes in the latest attacks Igbos have been victims but does that mean those victims before the recent one don't matter or infact the numerous northerners killed by BH?
If you want war with the north be man enough to declare it, but stop hiding behind BH or waiting for the international community to start it for you.

And so bcoz Igbo dey icc, I suppose he was appointed there for his tribal linings? And r there no Muslims there going by your lateral logic?

Nigerians think! Africans think! The united nations might come tomorrow and recognise boko haram as the legitimate government of Nigeria. They did the same thing in Libya by taking sides with the NTC rebels who have ties with the salafist group of preachhing and combat which actually is an offshoot of alqaeda in the islamic magrheb. They did the same thing in cambodia by acknowledging pol pot and the khmer rogues as the official government of cambodia despite the fact that the khmer rogues were responsible for the death of more than two million people. Do not be suprised if the united nations come tomorrow and recognises boko haram as the legitimate government of Nigeria. My people think!

Early morning drugs is not good for you, what is all the thrash you're writing about? Was NTC a legitimate government during Gaddafi's regime? Correct me if I'm wrong, was NTC not fighting for the liberation of the people? Freedom from their autocratic ruler? Did NTC start random bombing and mass killing of innocent citizen, though it was said that some people accused them, but everything BH is doing now, correct me if I'm wrong, did they do same thing?

Quite a welcoming development. It is a good that the International community is beginning to recognize the AGGRESSORS and VAMPIRES. This is not 1966 but the 21st century. There is 24hours cable news and citizen journalism. It is certainly going to be VERY different this time. We will have to use every tool at our disposal to uproot this EVIL and expose the culprits and their Sponsors, Saboteurs and Sympathizers.

This is not about only Igbo thing/ or so called Southerners. There are a lot of Christians indigenous to Northern Nigeria. They must be protected at all cost. Yakubu Gowon should learn from this and Apologize. This is his morning. He was very short sighted. Nevertheless, we have to also be there for them.

Do you know that the indictment against Bashir contributed to the liberation of South Sudan? And that is not the end for him. More still on the way. Just a matter of time.

The problem with people like you is that you are too FULL of yourself. Always trying to show that you are "smart" but continuously fooling yourself. You can't be engaged with logically because you already have a pre-conceived notion about critical issues. Must everything be politics and sabotage to you?

I do not CARE about playing international politics/law at this juncture. The doctrine that should be applied in this case is, "The enemy of my enemy is my friend".

It is people like you that make me have very DEEP suspicion about your folks( you know what i am talking about). It will dawn on you. Your own Morning is coming.

I really salute the courage of th CAN president- Ayo Oritsejafor. He has been vocal in these condemnations. If only the other christian leaders will follow suit, perharps we will get more attention. The southern Governors are really a shame. They are simply cowards.

I am not surprise that N100milion is paid to the father in law of late Yussuff. Compensation to the family of a fallen hero and, another way to use public fund to sponsor BH. How did BH came into existence? was it not somebody using them as political thugs, sponsoring their activities assigning them to kill opponets/oppositions? Where has the N100million compensation gone to? We are not telling ourselves the truth, the  north are not happy with a southern President and they have vowed to make the country ungovernable by engaging BH to kill and bomb xtians and their churches respectively. To achive this, BH were sent to somalia for terrorism training.

Only God can save xtians in Nigeria

The late president Yar'adua was able to disarm the bigger, richer, more sophisticated and more heavily armed and sectionally suppoted Niger Delta insurgency group without recourse to external support. But Azazi - the national security adviser is sending an open invitation to a foreign power to come and occupy Nigeria. Boko Haram instead of being contained by the arms of government responsible for containing violent criminals , are deliberately presented as the idea of the whole northern Muslims or even the whole North.they are a criminal group and a terrorist organization who the president knows - because he announces this himself regularly an publicly.allowing them to operate freely must be a planned chaos by those who want to dismantle Nigeria. One religious leader is clearly a mouthpiece for this treachery and is always ready to raise tension and call people to arms while nothing is being done to contain the terrorists.
