Unnecessary Appointments Made By President Goodluck Jonathan by Phate07(m): 12:32pm On Jan 17, 2012
How President Goodluck Jonathan is wasting resources through unnecessary appointments.

Let's start by looking at the list and designations of aides in the Presidency and see if they are necessary at all. President Goodluck Jonathan in June 2011 sought and obtained the approval of Senate to appoint 20 advisers to assist him in running his government. However, the President has, in apparent breach of the number of aides approved for him, gone ahead to appoint at least 24 advisers as at the last count.

Mr. Oronto Douglas, Special Adviser to the President on Research and Strategy. Sentiments aside, what exactly is the role of this office and couldn’t it have been carried out by a permanent employee in the Presidency?

Prof. Abubakar Sambo, Special Adviser to the President on Energy. Really? What distinctive ‘special advice’ is the President expecting from the incumbent here that the ministers for petroleum, energy and power cannot give?

Mrs. Sarah Akuben Pane, Special Adviser to the President on Social Development. One is too stumped to even comment on this.

Mrs. Sarah Jibril, Special Adviser to the President on Ethics and Values. What a joke! Who even monitors what, if any, work some of these appointees have been carrying out?

Kingsley Kuku, Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Affairs. What would the minister and the minister of state for the Niger Delta ministry be doing and what about the head of the Niger Delta Development Commission?

Prof. Dan Adebiyi, Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties and Senator Isaiah Ballat, Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties (Office of the Vice-President). Could someone please unpack this designation for me? Same request suffices for Nze Sullivan Akachukwu Nwakpo, Special Adviser to the President on Technical Matters and for Mrs. Asma’u Abdulkadir, Special Adviser to the President on Gender Issues. What on earth amounts to ‘technical matters’?

And there are also Yakubu Abdullahi, Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters (Office of the Vice President);
Mr. Bashir Sufyan, Special Adviser to the President on Legal Matters (Office of the Vice-President).
Professor Nwanze Okidegbe, Economic Adviser to the President. What economic advice would this officer give the President that the National Economic Management Team members including the Minister of Finance and the Minister of National Planning cannot?

Senator Ben Obi, Special Adviser to the President on Inter-Party Affairs. There is absolutely no reason to appoint a special adviser for just this function, when there is Ahmed Gulak, Political Adviser to the President just as the designation of Dr Mariam Ali, Special Adviser to the President on Inter-governmental Affairs.

Perhaps the most curious is the Special Adviser (New Media), Reno Omokri. In clear terms, he is special adviser on Twitter and Facebook matters! This is aside the fact that there is a Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity. Strangely, the ‘Twitter and Facebook special adviser’ is not attached to the office of the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity but to the Special Adviser, Research and Strategy.

By the way, these special advisers would ordinarily have their own personal assistants and other aides.
Total waste of funds that could have been channeled into productive and progressive uses.

I think it would make more sense if we could focus more on our states and local Governments. The structure of Nigeria demands that every state and every section of the country gets a space in Abuja. Thats what they call Federal Character. Thats exactly why there are 37 Ministers in Nigeria.

Thats why instead of fighting Fuels subsidy removal, we ought to march to the Legislative arm and demand our own constitution that would discard the one foisted upon us by some soldiers.

Another reason why you might want to focus more on your locality-

Do you really believe that RENO can pay me Reno is doing his thing!
Me, my interest in in a prosperous Nigeria where private enterprise can thrive!!
If you notice, I tend to support anything that welcomes competition- Deregulation, Privatization, Fashola's Lekki Toll, PPPs, and all that kind of stuff!!
And that is where I would keep supporting Oga Jona. That is the exact reason I voted him.
There's more to come with regards to privatization, so more protests are expected from the regular socialists, so I will remain here supporting Oga Jona!

And that is the same clown that speaks out both sides of his tongue.

To think that this clod was on some Build Up Nigeria shit. How can you take up a flimsy, wasteful and ridiculous position as this and still have the nerve to talk about progress?

@op

Not just these special advisers thing that is a pain in the ass, some ministries no matter how small with hardly any tangible parastatal under them still have minister of states. Not just that, special assinstants also have  their own special assistants, secretaries also have their own secretaries and on and on, at the end job descriptions are way so duplicated.

It's a good start, jay bee. Discussions like these prepare the people to stand up to the govt like they did recently. BTW, if SA Omokri is doing his job, these complaints should get to Presido. (PS: I have a feeling GEJ has abandoned his Facebook account for the sake of his sanity - See as Naijas dey yab and curse am for there!)

@Op But for the recent focus on "high cost of governance" GEJ would have appointed a Coordinating Special Adviser for all Special Advisory functions  grin

Honestly, i rly dnt knw if im to laugh real hard or to cry after reading through this piece. Do we realy expect d gvmt to reform itself? Hell no, it is only we d masses that can put an end to this madness but unfortunately our individual stup!dity wnt allow us figure out that those milking this country a select few from all d 36 states of d federation. When u v a senate that approves 20 special advisers for 1man with a take a bow kind of screening, i wnt be supprised if d other 4 criminals came b4 them and took a bow like others without the senators counting. At best we rant here in NL and look 4ward to another topic 2mrrw to react to as usual and case closed. Both d leaders and we d lead v serious issues.

The only simple and viable proposition is for people to either recall their elected reps or better still wait until the next election to make their bloody vote count.
They voted the man in so they had better live with it.
