Okogie ill, flown to India News Monday, January 30, 2012

By Sam Eyoboka

LAGOS – There were indications that the 75-year old Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Anthony Cardinal Okogie, has been flown abroad for medical treatment.

Sources close to the church said, Sunday, that the cleric was rushed out to India for an undisclosed ailment, but information available to Vanguard said he could not stand because his two legs were swollen.

All efforts to get his close associates to give details of Okogie's health condition proved abortive, but an insider said the cardinal's condition might not be unrelated to old age.

Okogie, a one-time President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has been in and out of hospital over age related medical conditions, while those who are close to him said the Edo State-born cardinal does not eat regularly.

The current CAN president, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, last night, expressed shock at the news, saying the Nigerian Church must rally behind this illustrious son of the country whose voice had been golden on the side of the masses.

Oritsejafor said: "May the God of Heaven rise in his favour because the Nigerian Church and the Nigerian people still need his invaluable counsel and contribution to the development of the nation."

According to him, Okogie's voice has been a major source of encouragement to the younger generation of Nigerian Christians, adding: "He has over the years been a voice to the voiceless and my heartfelt prayers go to God to intervene at this moment of his travail.” - Vaguard Newspaper.

I wish the venerable father a quick recovery and good health.
Howver, upon seeing and reading this headline, two issues have been nagging my mind, especially conerning issues often raised and debated on this forum.

First, is the validation of my personal conviction  of the supremacy of the law of cause and effect. The cause here being aging and the effect being illness. No hail mary about that.

Religion, in its pure form is an attempt at spiritual regeneration or redemption and not an investment for  material or physical boon.
Here on this Forum and in our society, the purveyors and the consumers of the new BLING BLING Theology harangue us daily about the need to invest in god so that we can reap material rewards of  health and money.
Hogwash to all that.

The second and most poignant, is the choice of far-away India for physical repairs of the aging high priest of Jehovah. That speaks volumes.for

Obviously , India has a better and much more advanced health care system and facilities than does Nigeria. Blame our leadership.

Obviously, Indians have dedicated more parts of their brain to  knowing about and how to treat human diseases than  Nigerians.

Obviously, the worshippers of  Shiva, Indira, Vishnu, Garuda et al.,in far waway India , have more to offer in terms of good healthcare to our esteemed high priest than the worshippers of Jehova and Allah in our own soil.

Maybe we should ask to borrow thier gods even if just for a century or so.
