How Does UNICAL Calculate Their 4.0 Grading System? by yamakuza: 3:32pm On Feb 03, 2012
tanimola22:
I need someone to kindly explain the grading system at Unical. I heard it is on a 4.00 scale, but I don't know how the letter grades and degree classification are distributed. I am aware of the US 4.00 GPA system and that is even how my grades are reported. However, I don't know if it is the same with that of Unical.

Correct answers will be well appreciated.

Thanks

T22.

US 4.00 System

A+=4.00
A=4.00
A=3.7
B+=3.3
B=3
B-=2.7
and so on till F

Dont the grades determine your CGPA and hence the class of your degree?

Thank you Moderator.

The 4.00 GPA system uses cumlaude, magna and summa cumlaude. These are quite different from our degree classification in Nigeria.

I heard Unical currently uses the 4.00 GPA system, but the degree classification is that of the 5.00 GPA system i.e. 1, 2.1, 2.2, 3 and so on. You see the mismatch.

Even UI uses 7 point system, or at least they used to.

Did you check the link above?

Cant one convert from 5 to 4 ( x 0.8 ? ) to know where the new class boundaries will lie?
Re: How Does UNICAL Calculate Their 4.0 Grading System? by tanimola22: 4:09pm On Feb 03, 2012
^^^^ Hahhaha

It does not work that way. If it did, many Nigerians wouldn't be studying where the minimum GPA for admission is 3/4.

Let's wait for an alumnus of Unical to help answer. I am quite familiar with that of UI. 6-7 is first and so on

This is serious O. I thought many nairalanders graduated from Unical. Not even a response yet. Okay.

3.65/5.00 = 2.92/4.00

Hahahahahaha. You'd remember I told you that the GPA conversion doesn't work that way. 2.92/4.00 is a pathetically average GPA and definitely a gross misrepresentation and undervaluation of an above average GPA of 3.65/5.00. It completely discounts a student's efforts, and admissions officers all around the world know this. In actual fact, and under normal circumstances, a student with a GPA of 2.92/4.00 can never get a competitive scholarship. In my school, for example, a student will normally not be allowed to graduate if his GPA falls below 3.00/4.00, not to now talk of getting a scholarship. This might even also be the case for less competitive programs. The average GPA of most US college students falls in the interval of (2.5, 3.1), http://www.thecollegesolution.com/whats-happening-to-the-average-gpa-in-college. This is the equivalence of a 2:2 average in Nigerian universities.

Although I may be wrong, I think that a more realistic interpretation of a 3.65/5.00 GPA should be a B or a B+. This corresponds to a GPA of between (3.0, 3.3). At the University of Ghana-Legon, for example, a 2:1 is between (3.0,3.5999), http://85.92.87.111/~artcypr/comparability.html. I therefore see no reason why a 2:1 GPA from a Nigerian university should be less than 3.00/4.00.

I hope this helps.

^ Makes a lot of sense.

Should we move to the Education section or wait a few more days for Frank Edoho and his former classmates to answer us?
Re: How Does UNICAL Calculate Their 4.0 Grading System? by tanimola22: 1:21pm On Feb 05, 2012
Frank Edoho? Only millions attract a person like Edoho.

I am even all the more confused. One guy said Unical also uses the regular 5.00 system.

Yes, move it to education. Maybe we can get a good answer there. Unical grads are a minority on the career section of nairaland.

@tanimola22 thanks a lot i had 3.65 which is a 2:1 am so surprised that i can not et up to 3.0 on a 4.00 scale, if your conversion is true then i qualify for the scholarship. Thanks a million!
Re: How Does UNICAL Calculate Their 4.0 Grading System? by hardbody: 2:49pm On Feb 13, 2012
I just read through this. It has been some time i graduated from that institution, i recall that 2.1 (Second upper) starts from 3.00 and ends somewhere around 3.75 or thereabouts ( I made a 2.1 on 3.01 scale). If given a little bit of time (some days), i hope to look for my academic transcript and then give a well articulated response to this enquiry. One sure thing is that the grading system was never confusing then, and it should not be now.

Almost all Federal Universites in Nigeria make use of the 5.0 point grading system. Unizik where i graduated from last year is an example! 4.1 which i made by God's grace was a second class upper honours. 4.5 to 5.0 gives a first class! Other schools use higher, while others, lower. The conversion is however wats confusing. Why cant a unified system be used in Nigeria!

^ from them, 3.65/5.00 is still 2.92/4.0

Guess you'll need a strong 2.1 to get above 3.0 on a 4.0 scale?

@all: Thanks and keep the comments coming!
Re: How Does UNICAL Calculate Their 4.0 Grading System? by saska1122: 5:28pm On Feb 13, 2012
I graduated from UNICAL exactly 10yrs ago. My results and class of degree was on a 5.0 scale. I don't think it has changed since then. As someone said earlier, all federal university in Nig use same scale.
For class of degree in Unical:
4.5-5.0 (1st class)
3.5- 4.49(2nd class upper)
2.4-3.49(2nd class lower)
1.5-2.39(3rd class)
< 1.5(pass) if they still award that.

For the conversion in a foreign university, it depends mostly on the foreign university. The programs that UNICAL graded on a 4.0 scale are the Non-NUC programs like ND and certificates.

I guess I am best suited to respond to this. I graduated from Unical in 1989 with a 2.1 and went to my transcript for a second time last October and was issued with a 2.2 transcript. This was changed when I protested. During our time 4.00 grading was used but they have since changed to 5.00.
I am looking at the transcript now and this is what is says for us in 1989
Classification of degrees
3.75 to 4.00 First class
3.00 to 3.74 second class upper
2.50 to 2.99 second class lower
2.25 to 2.49 third class
2.00 to 2.24 pass
Below to 2.00 fail

Grading system
A = Excellent 4.00
A- = Very very good 3.75
B+ = Very good 3.50
B = Good 3.00
B- = fairly good 2.75
C+ = fair 2.50
C = Pass 2.00
D = Fail 1.50
F = Bad failure

40% of first 2 years
60% of final 2 years

So my 2.1 was restored using the 4.00 in place during my time and because I had a copy of the previous transcript to show the guy who btw left school in the 2000s.

I can see the contradiction stems from different graduation years.

@bouncino Thanks! This solves the GPA riddle.

@ bouncino, u r dead right. Where belong 2 d same generation of malabites. Ur analysis is a replica of what i obtained. 3.01 gave me a 2.1 after ur set. However no one will dare reduce my grade on any fabricated recent grading system.

@Hardbody, I want start small fight that day. The 4.00 system was too limiting and made it difficult to make first class. The range was too narrow and the school went over 10 years without a first class.
Re: How Does UNICAL Calculate Their 4.0 Grading System? by hardbody: 7:17pm On Feb 13, 2012
@ bouncino, in those days, any cummulative 3 unpassed papers earned one an 'advise' to withraw, the only first class in that ur set was a guy from 'Economics' . I cant recall his name now. It was really tough even making the 2.1
Re: How Does UNICAL Calculate Their 4.0 Grading System? by tree0flife(m): 3:26pm On Feb 14, 2012
@saska1122, Exactly what it was in my time at UNICAL. I graduated in the year 2000 with 3.62 CGPA on the 5.0 scale. It's second class upper. I still remember then that 3.5 was the limit for me (as in my personal target) since i didn"t want to drop to 2.2
