Wao! what a nice discussion Marine Engineering is a rewardable career for those youth who does not mind the foot to get wet in occean.
A cash boom career that dependable when it comes to rolling dollars especially if u're lucky to work on oil rigs or FPSO platform or floating vessel no wonder Big Guys in the field changing cars/house like papers pulling their crowd in their varoius territory.
My name is Olawale Adeola after my first degree in Mechanical Engineering from FUTA, I worked in schulumberger for 2years before I left for UK to study Marine engineering after graduated I was lucky to work in one of Chevron Oil field in Houston I proceed to aquired my OOW Certification to qualified to act as an officer on board thereafter I got a job as technical Superintendent Engineer in Qarta GAS coy to be honest lot of money!!
Recently, I've finally settle down because of my children and wife now I'm working fleet tracking officer for Canadian transport and coaster agency
My I advice those aspirants to trying and got a least a degree in marine engineering from abroad and trying to sit for all relevant professional exams no doubt you guys will be smile at last. Pls never try the course if you are not financial stable because it milks money to become qualified marine engineering, it worths struggle for.
Like places to work as a marine engineering are:
shipping companies
oil and gas companies, renewable energy coy, naval officer in charge of designing aircraft carriers and missiles, oilservices coy,sea port etc good luck bye.

Wat about havin your degree from naija and proceedin to UK for your OOW? Is it not a G̶̲̥̅Ơ̴̴̴̴͡.̮Ơ̴̴̴͡D̶̲̥̅ idea? But the field of marine is all about CoC and not Degree, cos i see many postions online askin for CoC and no degree,
Re: Marine Engineering Aspirants And Practitioners: Any Future? by aladejana1: 9:04pm On Feb 06, 2012
Marine Engineering as a career go beyound sailing onboard vessel, sailing is just a minor contribution. Honestly, Marine is a wide wide course with diversed set of applications. For example in Mechanical Engineering field my grandfather thinks all what it entailes is autombile where there is a lot of option too in that said carreer.
So having a degree will give you and exception from MCA during your OOW where mates with Diplomas have to sit for both Oral and written exams to acquired their OOW, a degree holder will be exempted and equally went for just Oral exams bam!
With yr degree in marine engineering you can be a technical superintendent manager in marine operation dept of most oil services coys and oil companies, because I have some of my friends now in that post in different oil companies because u just have to be ashore sending spare parts and crew for their oil tankers and Gas carriers honestly most oil company employed marine engineers with degree just like normal engineering field. If you really looking for money in that field go for degree first + OOW certificate then you can hurt for job in these fields
1. oil coys marine operation dept
2. Liquidified natural gas coys e.g target Angola, middle east, canada, Qartar and Nigeria
3.oil rigs and FPSO platform
4.sea ports, Ministry of transport or NIMASA, Naval officer, offshore renewable energy coys etc. Honestly, marine engineering course is a hot cake but poorly established in Nigeria. I'm living witness good luck to u.

Nice one Sir,
For Class 1 & 2 CoC upgrade with MCA you'll still need to do written exams on Engineering Knowledge (General, Naval Architecture & Electrics), then specific; Motor or Steam or Combined.

like you said, MSc, BSc/HND are all just 'added' mostly for shore-side jobs.

Example: Minimum Requirement for a Technical Superintendent is a Class 1 CoC (Chief Engineer)...
Minimum Requirement for an Assistant Technical Superintendent is a Class 2 CoC (1st or 2nd Engineer)...
This is true for at least 85% of companies employing.

As a Chief Engineer without a degree you'll get an unbelievable job plus 5 times the salary of a bank Manager with PhD! grin

So i'll say for intending marine engineers, get required seatime, go for CoC first (Oron, Ghana, Egypt, Singapore, UK....pending on ur pocket), while getting the sea experience which is vital, do BSc, Master as part time, fix exams during ur leave, dont waste time!

but please note i understand NIMASA (with Oron) only offers Limited CoC for now, i'm not very sure of this, i did mine everything in d uk.

Oron gives unlimited but Oron CoC is indidenous...not accepted for job outside Nigeria and some companies in Nigeria don't accept it cos men dey buy their ways...

I hold a Highger National Diploma and a National Diploma both in Electrical Engineering from the Kwara state Polytechnic in Nigeria. Finished NYSC 2011.
I hold these CERTIFICATE courses from MARITIME ACADEMY, Oron in Nigeria:
1.Elementary First Aid certificate 2. Personal safety and Social Responsiblities certificate 3.Personal Survival Techniques certificate and 4. Fire prevention and Fire Fighting certificate
I possess a Seamans Record book and Certificate of Discharge.
I attended a Quality, Health, Safety and Environmental Competence Development course (QHSE)Level 3of 3 and also Graduate Certificate in Management from the Nigerian Institute of Management.
Its been so difficult seeking employment for like 3 years now, i have done all manner of jobs to just survive.
So i think the best is for me to upgrade my skill abroad.
I am 25 years of age and would like to study Marine engineering or Nautical sciences.
I am just so confused.

Can you engineers help me with a nautical job (deckhand) for a seaterm, I've been able to acquire all the necessary maritime documents, I also did nautical science(coxswain) as a professional program, I've also done the nimasa SID hoping that they would call on me some time, and I've submitted CV to some companies too, but I dont want to wait forever till all my documents will expire. If you guys know of any manning/crewing agency that can help facilitate this, I'll be glad as I dont want to fall victim of fake agents, kindly get back to me. Bien merci!

Relation Between Metal Concentration In Water And Metal Content of Marine Mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis)

Hemelraad et al., (1986, 1987 and 1988) published a series of papers concerned with the effect of cadmium on freshwater clams. Hemelraad et al., (1990) studied the effects of cadmium on freshwater clams Anodonta cygnea and the interaction of cadmium with the essential elements sodium, potassium, calcium, mercury, iron, zinc.

Abdel and Farag, (1991) studied the rate of the bioaccumulation in the Edku lake space and the El-Fayomy of (1994) was found that the marine clam of the Cardium edula in the Lake Manzala had accumulated so much more heavy metals than the first examined fishes in the lake. The Zhou, (2008) was reported that the snails in the accumulated heavy metals is said to be high concentrations order than any other group of invertebrate and also as it was demonstrated in the ability as a potential bioindicator.

The Bioaccumulation of The heavy metals in the snail species has been previously been reported by several investigators for over the past two decades. Like Dr Reed-Judkins et al., (1998) who studied the bioaccumulation of the heavy metals in the Lymnaea stagnalis. Snyman et al. (2000) studied the bioaccumulation of metals in snail Helix aspersa.

The Enzemonye et al., (2006) had studied the bioaccumulation of the heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Fe) in the freshwater snail (Pliaovota; Oliver 1804) from the Ikpoba River of south Nigeria. Kim and Kim in (2007) had conducted studied on heavy metals accumulation in the Oxyloma hirasei from the Upo wetland. Jan et al., (2011) also studied heavy metal in the accumulation in pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis in freshwater. Astani et al., (2012) also studied the bioaccumulation of heavy metals in soft body tissues of the gastropods Thais mutabilis and also the sediments from the intertidal zone of Bandar Abbas.
