YOLA -  The people of Adamawa went to the polls Saturday for the re-scheduled governorship election amid tight security.

Accreditation and voting commenced at about 8:00am and 12:30pm respectively with good turn out of voters as anxious voters queued to exercise their civic responsibilities.

Vanguard Correspondents who monitored the elections in Yola North, Yola South, Mayo Belwa, Girei, Demsa, Fufore and Numan report of orderliness and peaceful conduct, with low turnout of voters in some wards.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar while voting at his Ajiya ward described the preparations by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as superb and different from other election arrangements in the past.

The Former Vice President stated that he was equally impressed with the security arrangements, adding that campaign by the candidates were worth commending as they were devoid of malice and character assassination.

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar expressed optimism that the PDP will carry the day. PDP candidate in the election, former Governor Murtala Nyako who voted at Hammanyero “A” ward in Mayo Belwa Local Government was also full of hope in winning the election.

CPC candidate Mohammed Marwa and his ACN counterpart Engineer Markus Gundiri voted in Michika and Hong respectively.

Re: Adamawa Guber Election by mukina2: 10:49pm On Feb 04, 2012
Early results from polling units showed the three main parties living up to their billing as front runners. At Karewa Primary School, Yola North where Newsdiaryonline watched the counting of votes, Action Congress of Nigeria,ACN which has Markus Gundiri as its candidate performed well as the party won the highest vote cast in all the four units there.CPC ‘s Buba Marwa and PDP’s Murtala Nyako did quite well there too.

But the supporters of Gundiri celebrated as if the votes at Karewa Primary School were enough to make him governor. In fact one supporter told a shop-owner nearby that Gundiri had won the election but he was immediately corrected and told that it was too early to say so because Karewa votes were not enough to make him governor.

Reports reaching CPC supporters from various local governments also said the party had put up impressive showing.A close observer of Adamawa politics told Newsdiaryonline that an analysis of the early results from some units and wards showed clearly that ACN and CPC might have made a blunder by not agreeing to an alliance to challenge PDP .If the alliance had talks had been cemented, it was evident from early results that the opposition would have confidently defeated PDP,the observer said .That was what the results at Karewa showed for instance. For now official collation of results from all the parts of the state continues and many expect that perhaps by Sunday morning a clearer picture will emerge.

Meanwhile accreditation and voting generally took place peacefully in places visited.Observers ,agents and officials of INEC said materials arrived early except in few places that recorded slight delays. But by 10:00AM at most centres in Yola accreditation had begun.Voting commenced at varying times ranging from 12 noon to 12.30PM and 1.00PM .But by 6.00PM officials including National Youth Service Corps ,NYSC members from some far-flung units began to report at Karewa Primary School for collation of results.

It should be highlighted that despite reports of the security situation in Adamawa state, youth corps members defied all odds and volunteered to serve their country in this exercise much to the admiration of all. They formed the bulk of electoral officials at the polling stations visited today.

Where did you get the statistics from? The  truth is that the muslims in Adamawa state are not more than the Xtians  going by the facts and figures.

Introduction of religion an state like Adamawa will always lead to the party loosing. This is because is not evrybody that is ready to go along the religion divide. And since the state is a kind of 50-50 ratio, the party introducing it always suffers. Is just like the case of Adamu moddibo and Boni Haruna in 2003. Adamu moddibbo lost mainly because he started introducing religion to his campaign. He wanted muslims to vote for him

Likewise from the look of things, the current ACN candidate will loose simply because he was introducing religion to the politics in the state.  Though i heard that ACN is giving PDP tough time in some places.  Marwa CPC is surely the last among three, because no matter how good Marwa may look, people in the state still do not trust CPC because of the post election violence that happened in April.

Now it is PDP vs ACN.  But I think PDP will win with a narrow margin.
ACN actaully lost it by introducing religion.
All fingers crossed.

Harassment of voters and under-supplying of ballot boxes, especially in the opposition strongholds, characterised yesterday’s gubernatorial election in Adamawa State.

[b]The two main candidates in the election are Alhaji Murtala Nyako of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Brig Gen Buba Marwa.
Anxiety ruled the state as the result of the poll was being awaited last night.

A former House of Representatives member was said to have been arrested by the police after being caught with six ballot boxes at Ganye 2 ward in Ganye LGA. The erstwhile lawmaker was a sympathiser of the PDP candidate in the election. Results from two units in Dubwangun ward of Larmude LGA, at press time, showed that Marwa won.

Nyako was, until recently when he was sacked by the Supreme Court alongside four others, the governor of Adamawa State.

At Mayo/Farang ward 1 and Sebore Ahmadu ward 1 in Mayo Belwa LGA, observers alleged that some persons, said to be PDP agents, called out returning officers from the polling units into a house under police protection where they were allegedly given money to influence the outcome of the votes cast.

At Michika, the home town of the CPC candidate, it was reported that in Thukudou/Sukufu/Zar wards, comprising 14 polling units, only 200 ballot boxes were distributed by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, instead of 1, 000 earmarked for the polling units.

At Foru ward, also in Michika, comprising four polling units, INEC was alleged to have earmarked eight ballot boxes for the election whereas only one ballot box was reportedly brought to one of the pollings unit.

At Yola South LGA, Kofar Baba ward-unit 009, security agencies, allegedly working in tandem with PDP agents, harassed and beat up election observers whom they believed were dishing out reports not favourable to PDP.

At Guyuk LGA, Dangir/Chikala ward, CPC agents rejected the plan to conduct a secret ballot instead of open secret ballot approved by INEC. In Madagali ward, in Madagali LGA, suspected PDP supporters snatched a ballot box with CPC voters casting most votes. At Zumo, in Hong LGA, with about 2,500 votes, CPC agents were being singled out and arrested by security agents.

The polling units which results showed Marwa as leading, according to reports, are Bakwo and Kofar Jauro in Dubwangun Ward, Larmude LGA.

In Bakwo, Marwa allegedly scored 42 votes to Nyako’s 35 and ACNcandidate’s 30 while the Kofar Jauro results are: Marwa, 60; Nyako, 44; ACNC, 28.

@ddaji,

the christian/muslim ratio u mentioned in adamawa is totally false. The fact remains that the muslim northerner no matter how small the population is in a state is by far more politically aware compared to the christian northerners who have relegated themselves maybe due to low sense of belonging. in my opinion the xtian/muslim ratio in that state is 70:30. Even if one thinks that the muslims are more in population and votes are to be cast on religious grounds, then the cpc and pdp wil share the muslim votes leaving acn to come out victorious.

dayokanu:

Boni Haruna became governor because he was the deputy to Atiku who went to be Obj VP

^^ That was in 1999, what of the second election in 2003?
Boni Haruna won in 2003 becuase he was the incumbent governor and Adamu Modibbo was bringing religion to his politics.
Religious politics will hardly work in Adamawa state, be it Xtains or muslims.
Re: Adamawa Guber Election by superior2(m): 8:31am On Feb 05, 2012
currently cpc is left behind, pdp is leading with just a narrow merging to its rival acn. its seems like our citizens are still not ready to change this unexperience leader.
