Man Utd Vs Liverpool (2 - 1) On Saturday 11th February 2012 by mukina2: 1:00pm On Feb 10, 2012
When Alex Ferguson arrived at Old Trafford in November 1986, his ambition, as he revealed some years later, was to remove Liverpool from their perch. The king he sought to dethrone was Kenny, the player who had withdrawn from Ferguson's Scotland squad ahead of the 1986 World Cup.

Theirs has always been an intriguing relationship, at times positively friendly but often showing signs of a fierce rivalry that can spill over into personal hostility. Ferguson, when still desperately trying to end the long Manchester United slumber in 1988, left a 3-3 draw at Anfield complaining that visiting managers "have to leave here choking on their own vomit - biting on their tongue, afraid to tell the truth". Dalglish told reporters his six-year-old daughter would "make more sense" than his fellow Govanite.

Times have changed, and Manchester United have now overtaken Liverpool's record tally of league titles, but with the renewal of the rivalry 13 months ago has come the renewal of an old challenge for Ferguson. When Dalglish oversaw Roy Hodgson's team for an FA Cup meeting on January 9 last year, the Red Devils defeated the Reds 1-0. In the three meetings since, Liverpool have won two and drawn one, with the 1-1 draw at Anfield in October seeing United restricted to just 44% possession - their lowest of the season.

While they trail their rivals by a considerable 16 points in the league, Liverpool are developing an aptitude for the big clashes - eliminating Chelsea and Manchester City in the Carling Cup and now Manchester United in the FA Cup - and will go into the game in the belief that they can help prevent a 20th league trophy finding its way into the trophy cabinet at Old Trafford.

Ryan Giggs is determined that United do not allow that to happen. "They're a club similar to us with massive history," he told Inside United. "We're the two most successful teams in the country, so we know we've got to perform and play well to get anything from any game against them. We know we're in for a tough game. It's the club we tried to catch for so long and now we've caught them the challenge is to stay ahead."For all of that, the longstanding on-field rivalry will be concentrated on an off-field drama that has dominated headlines since the teams' last league meeting. Luis Suarez has now served his eight-match ban after being found guilty of racially abusing Patrice Evra at Anfield, and is in line to make his second appearance since returning. Dalglish, for one, is determined to ensure the forward does not deflect attention from the game.

"Everyone involved, including the media, the supporters and both teams, have a responsibility to ensure this weekend is remembered as a cracking game of football between two very good sides, rather than for anything else," he told the club's official website. "I'm sure people will want to talk about Luis Suarez, but he accepted his ban, served his suspension and returned against Spurs on Monday. It's time for all of us to draw a line under what happened and move forward."

Manchester United player to watch: Javier Hernandez. Having set the world alight in his first season, fitness issues have tempered Chicharito's impact in the current campaign. Following the fightback to 3-3 at Chelsea last weekend, though, Sir Alex Ferguson acknowledged that the Mexican had turned the game on its head and should have started; a place in the first XI on Saturday now looks certain, particularly as Hernandez has scored in each of the last two league meetings with Liverpool.

Liverpool player to watch: Luis Suarez. Two weeks after Patrice Evra braved the hatred at Anfield, Suarez must meet his fate at Old Trafford. He says he is ready for it and, indeed, that he expects to thrive. "They are going to spur me on if they whistle at me," he told Uruguayan radio.

Key Battle: Jonny Evans v Craig Bellamy. With Andy Carroll still struggling to find his feet, it was Bellamy - the free transfer - who stepped into the breach during Luis Suarez's nine-game absence. Though he tends to play from out wide, Bellamy scored six goals in all competitions during that period, and on current form represents the Reds' most potent threat. He may well thrive amid the cauldron of the Theatre of Dreams; Evans has a tendency to get exposed when confronted by pace and, though he is now 32, Bellamy's driving runs have been as dangerous as ever in recent weeks.

Trivia: It is now 25 years since Sir Alex Ferguson's first managerial meetings with Kenny Dalglish in the 1986-87 season. Manchester United won at both Anfield and Old Trafford as Liverpool finished nine points behind title winners Everton.

Stats: Steven Gerrard has scored four times in his last five Premier League games against Manchester United.
