Written by Idowu Samuel, Sokoto and Jacob Segun Olatunji, Abuja Saturday, 18 February 2012

The claim by the Police that the kingpin of the Boko Haram sect, Kabiru Sokoto, arrested in connection with the Christmas Day bomb blasts at Madalla, Niger State, escaped from lawful custody may have been a hoax after all.

There were indications on Friday, in Abuja, that his escape was allegedly aided by some top police chiefs in concert with the top echelon of the dreaded sect.

Saturday Tribune learnt that the suspect, who is now in the custody of the State Security Services (SSS), had actually given details of his purported escape to operatives grilling him.
Nigerians were stunned on January 15, this year when the police declared that Kabiru Sokoto had escaped from custody at Abaji, a suburb of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja while on investigation to search his residence.

Consequently, the Federal Government ordered the immediate suspension of the Commissioner of Police in charge of Anti-Terrorist Squad, Mallam Zakari Biu under whose custody the suspect escaped along with other policemen involved in the investigation into the matter and ordered a full-scale investigation into his alleged escape.

The government also relieved Mr. Hafiz Ringim of his post as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) with immediate effect for alleged negligence of duty.

However, it was gathered that following the re-arrest of Kabiru Sokoto by the combined team of military personnel and the operatives of the SSS penultimate Friday in Mutum-Biu, Taraba State, he had opened up on his purported escape.

Sources claimed that he denied that he escaped from lawful custody but that he was purportedly released by the police based on an alleged arrangement made with them by the top echelon of the sect with their contact in the police.

The suspect, it was learnt, alleged that the police facilitated his initial escape to a location in Toto, before he moved to Taraba State, where he had planned to flee to neighbouring Republic of Cameroun before he was caught.

It was further learnt that following the suspect’s revelation, the SSS reportedly marked one of the said top police officers and others down for further interrogation with a view to unraveling those behind the purported escape within and outside the police.

A very senior officer in the service told our correspondent in confidence that Kabiru Sokoto was cooperating with his interrogators which, he said at the end of the day, would assist in no small way in unraveling the mystery behind the activities of the sect in the country.

Asid from a single hilarious name in the above, there is nothing funny about the article.
90% of the police need to be either sacked, jailed or executed.

It is time to move out of this sorry nation called Nigeria. The longer we stay, the more likely these people and their fanaticism will be the death of us all. How does one justify arrangements with members of a sect that are killing your own members for sport?

I cringe to write the phrase "Nigerian Police" - there is no such thing in this country.

From robbing citizens in broad daylight (gently called bribery) to abetting terrorism, there is very little to save about the current police.

And the story keeps getting worse each day.

The top police officers who 'facilitated' his escape must be tracked down immediately and treated like real BH members. I don't want them dismissed just like we r used to. Those guys definitely know top BH members.

yeah, he initially moved to "Toto". He should have stayed in toto. lmao!  cheesy

On a serious note, does the Govt have the political will to unmask let alone prosecute the elites behind boko-haram?

This is disturbing! sad

Clueless GEJ, why did he allow the arrest of this man.lol

When GEJ said BH had infiltrated his government, many of you called and still call him cluelss, dumb, odechukwu.
Now it is becoming clear.
Imagine if this chap was never arrested, this revelations would have still eluded us. Some Nigerians want GEJ to be the police man on post to hunt every BH on the street.

Is GEJ clueless on BH, please answer.

The journalist just wrote Toto without indicating where it is located based on the assumption that everyone must know where Toto is.How silly is that? For the record,Toto is a local government in Bauchi state & not the Toto on everyone's mind grin.Hope that clears things up

If the story is true then Nigeria owes a big F-in apology and compensation to all those that have died. And BH might actually be right in saying Western education is evil. If all it has gotten us deception, lies and murder then every region should have its own 'government' sponsored BH sect to terrify the s-t out of other tribes! Maybe that's the wake up call this country deserves. SMDH

My serious concern as always is the cycle of destruction of our institutions as in this case by the ugly vices of sectarianism. If a Federal institution begins to fracture along lines of religious bigotry then the force as a whole is undermined. Where is the honour when you free a member of a sect that has killed hundreds of people who you swore to protect and worse murdered scores of your colleagues. What more can undermine morale when you cannot trust your fellow officer. I will not be surprised if these moles have given out the details of the top officers and detectives at the cutting edge of the counter-insurgency. No wonder they are frequently ambushed and caught up in IED's. No wonder informants find it hard to step forward. It is terrible. The penalty for this sort of crime should exceed anything given to the very terrorists themselves and in some other societies this means capital. And it has to be to send out a strong message to the rank and file before the bad eggs completely destroy the force. They do it frequently with armed robbers but this is taking it to a new and highly dangerous level.
