Before oil/gas was more or less thought to exist in commerical levels only in SS.Of course with discoveries in ondo,abia,edo and anambra we now have wells in all this states.
But what about the north and middle belt.
Well turns out benue has a huge amount in its basin  probably the biggest deposits onshore in nigeria that has been confirmed and its keenly sort out by chevron

But the real story is probably borno.
Now why borno .Well few years back huge amount was discovered in chad ,to be precise in what is called the chad basin.The chad basin is shared by niger,nigeria and chad with nigeria having over 1/4th of the basin in borno.
So it would make sense that borno should have oil.sadly initally NNPC was slow to react because they drilled there many years ago but turns out they did a rubbish job about it and never drilled deep enough .
There is  actually oil there and its been confirmed,so much so the government is investing heavily in drilling there.
Its believed Nigeria could be able to pump 4m/barrel a day in a few years and the chad/benue basin may rise the reserves  by another 10 b to 40b barrels.
If you remember when the Russian president came he was mostly intrested in talks not about the southern oil/gas but about benue/chad basin which means there is pretty much a lot there for him to cast his eye not at the new gas exploration in south but in the north!In fact he signed gazprom to explore the benue basin.
So maybe this is the news nigeria needs.We can stop fighting who has oil when all have oil and focus on putting a true leader in power who will manage the country properly!

Strangely enough there is already people screaming that the government on purpose did not explore the benue/niger basin previously so as not to tap into the their own reserves but yes its wise not to tap all the basins at same time .

In addition to ur point, going by the knowledge that d original chad basin actually spreads over d whole NE ( d extent of original lake chad within d Nigeria boundary), more states may likely carry potential of oil and gas reserves under their sands.

Naija govt have spent almost $200million to find oil for Lake Chad for almost uncountable years and nothing to show for it.

same was said about benue basin  and look at the confirmed reports of oil/gas in massive amounts if you bother to read the report posted above.so much so the russian president already signed gazprom to it.
The chad basin is shared with niger and chad and has already oil pumping from it.Its just common sense that any region sharing the basin has commerical oil thus the recent surge in oil exploration there.Also north cameroon sharing th same basin has found oil so its impossible to imagine the rest of the basin is without oil.
Problem was nnpc lazily has set 1500m for drilling over the years which is ok for niger delta  but all the oil found so far required drilling to more then 2000m .
