Police Inspector Shot Dead By Patrol Team-turning The Gun On Themselves! by gulfer: 6:40am On Feb 21, 2012
ENUGU—A Police Inspector, Clement Onwueguta, attached to Uwani Police Division in Enugu South local government area was shot dead weekend by a police patrol team which mistook him for an armed robber.

Four members of the police patrol team who killed the police officer have been detained and are currently being interrogated, with a view to ascertaining the person that actually fired the shot.

Vanguard learnt that the deceased police officer, who was dressed in mufti at the time of the incident on Friday night, was sighted with a pistol along the Railway Line at the end of Aku Street within Ogui New Layout and was ordered by the police patrol team from Ogui Police division to stop for a search.

Rather than complying with the directive, the late inspector reportedly took to his heels, prompting the patrol team to give him a hot chase.State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the incident yesterday, said the inspector was running toward the Uwani police barracks, which is about 100 metres away, when one of the police men shot him.

He said: “Inspector Onwueguta was not identified as a policeman when sighted from a distance somewhere along Aku Street, which is under Ogui Police division.

“People always trek from Edinburgh Road to Uwani through Aku Street and reports available to us show that hoodlums always attack people within that area.

“On that fateful day, February 17, men of Ogui Division had gone out on a routine patrol at the black spot. When they were coming, they sighted somebody from a distance and thought he was a hoodlum. The policemen shouted at him to stop but he took to his heels because he was alone.

“The operatives gave him a hot chase and in the course of the chase, the policemen heard a gun shot believed to have come from either one of them which eventually brought him down.

“On getting to the spot where he laid, the policemen searched and found on him a Beretta pistol and police ID card bearing the name Inspector Clement Onwueguta.

“It was a clear case of mistaken identity but members of the patrol team are already being interrogated. It was, indeed, an unfortunate incident.”

Meanwhile, the corpse of the police inspector who hails from Rivers State, had been deposited at an unnamed hospital for autopsy.

Strange. Why did he run when ordered to stop? If he thought they were armed robbers, couldn't he have defended himself since he was armed?

Good riddance. It's no wonder that these same police are also armed robbers and murderers.

Now let us see how this drama is going to be played out. Bloody clowns.

Strange that some ppl like you still believe Nigerian Police accounts of any event whatsoever! Nigerian Police is probabaly the only national organisation that enjoys lying with impunity.

but seriously this is complete madness even with the chase, while would the police shoot on me when he didn't show any sign of aggression like shooting at them their job was to catch him not shoot at him.

Two ways to look at this:

1. Its either they are lying. They must have fired before asking questions and later discovered he is one of them.

OR

2. Mr. Clement is using his service pistol to rob people on that infamous area and on sighting his colleagues fled so that he wont be identified.

Its either of the two.

there are strong reasons why nigerian police report should not be trusted. How could an inspector of police with a legalized pistol took to his heels when ordered to stop by fellow police patrol? in the first paragraph of this post, it reads that the patrol team sighted a man with pistol from afar, then the last paragraph said that the pistol was seen with a police id card after the man was short.  also police patrol with vehicle can not order you to stop from afar, they would drive near to you before ordering you to stop, if police patrol drives nearby you and order you to stop, there will not be a long chase as such as reported in the article, finally,
these guys are thieves, am sure the victim had a quarrel with another senior officer in office that resulted in this mayhem.

If it were to be an ordinary civilian, they would have labelled him a criminal even without any gun found. They deceased could had been a criminal who was trying to victimize passers-by. This is how they kill extra-judicially.

very pathetic, they use the supreme way out always, you can imagine shooting a man on a chase who didn't repel

it's the police so never trust anything that comes out of their dirty mouth

Leave the matter for the police to solve.
Police kill Police through ''accidental discharge'' or ''mistaken identity''

Possibly he was shot during an argument when they were sharing a loot gotten from where they went to rob. A service pistle was placed on him to authenticate the fabricated stories. They must av robed together.

That rail way side is very dangerous especially at nights, Lots of bad things usually happens that side, @TOPIC those police men are not saying the truth. Judging from what they said, they are lying cos their is no way they can see a person with a gun from that their patrol van in that street, cos the street is not that kind wide, long or straight, I don't believe them one bit, They killed the man for reasons only known to them simple.
Re: Police Inspector Shot Dead By Patrol Team-turning The Gun On Themselves! by Okijajuju1(m): 12:03pm On Feb 21, 2012
Questions arising;

1. Why would a Police inspector, run at the site of uniformed police men?!

2. WHy did the pursuing officers fire on a suspect who hadn't fired on them just yet?!

3. If the inspector saw that the men where in police uniforms, why didnt he identify himself?!

4. What was an inspector doing out there at night with his service pistol since he wasnt on duty?!
Re: Police Inspector Shot Dead By Patrol Team-turning The Gun On Themselves! by Nobody: 12:08pm On Feb 21, 2012
@fingard02k seems u live around that axis.

@topic the problem along that Aku street is not just the case of being robbed by hoodlums, policemen use to harass innocent residence along that axis. My younger brother's friend was arrested at that spots he went to see my younger one off just from the next street and it was dark and he was on boxers and singlet. They tagged him a criminal, if not that my younger bro had to call his military friends am sure something bad may have happened to them that night.

As for the death cop, has anyone thought about it ; if he was on official duty am sure he would not have been alone at that time given the notoriety of that rail track. I guess it's only the late cop that knows the truth.

Even if there are other possible scenarios, these two you have given are SO PLAUSIBLE that I personally believe one of them was just the case.

he should have stopped and showed them his police ID card to confirm who he was. But being smart, he would have known that his ID card might be found on him when he is carrying out his activities so he probably kept it safe at home.
Re: Police Inspector Shot Dead By Patrol Team-turning The Gun On Themselves! by Cruzgee: 3:19pm On Feb 21, 2012
I think it is neither here not there. It is really sad. The police man might have seen his coleagues robbing in that area on the said day and decides to run for his life before they discover being caught by another police man that identified them OR they may have seen the inspector that night and decided to kill him because they know he had seen them in operation armed robbery. I pray God orders our steps in life.
