How Do You Guard Against Buying Stolen Vehicles? by DrummaBoy(m): 3:09pm On Feb 21, 2012
I am very new to Nairaland Auto section and I look forward to someday purchasing a vehicle from some seller here.
But I wonder at some low prices offered for some so called "big time cars". could they be stolen?
How does one guard against stolen vehicles? And why do some peeps offer low prices for these cars and in cases like this(is it due to the saturated nature of Nigeria's car market); and how does one guard against being ripped off?
Awaiting response.
Thanks.

Buy from a seller you know or that you can find should any bubble burst.

Get the original Custom papers if a Tokunbo and get Original vehicle registration papers if a 9ja used.

The question here is about car security, not buying a car. Pls, those of you dealing in car sale should tell us about what you know. i want to know what security measure is the best and ok than gear lock. Thanks

Re: How Do You Guard Against Buying Stolen Vehicles? by NumberOne2(m): 11:59am On Feb 22, 2012
Buying BRAND NEW will ensure it isn't stolen.
Anyway, see that all documents are in order and are ORIGINAL.
However, the fact that a car is cheap doesn't really mean it may be stolen. It may be that the car has a serious fault and the owner wants to get rid of it.
Bottomline, don't be swayed by the price. Check that all other things are in order. Though, low prices have a way of blinding folks.

If the car is Nigeria used agree on the price with the dealer so that he will not fear that you want to expose the amount he has loaded on the price the owner asked him to sell it, then tell him you want to meet the original owner personally for double confirmation. If fresh tokunbo, run away from Cotonue cleared vehicles since the papers are usually fake, a dealer can fix one even for a stolen car. And again watch out for unbelievably cheap price because at the end of the day if such car is stolen and you are arrested, police will look at how reasonable the price of purchase is and if you pass that one then you may be blamed for not digging the background of the car, you are likely to get free, e.g a dealer wants to sell a very clean Honda EOD for N350K and u rush at it you are on your own. Lastly on dealing with registered dealers, we have to be careful. There was this dealer in Ilorin his modus was to travel to Idi-Iroko town in Ogun state under the guise that he went to bring tokunbo vehicles. meanwhile he was in league with some car snatchers and car thieves in Lagos who call immediately they had "market" he will proceed to Idi Iroko with one or two other drivers who will now drive the vehicles to Ilorin as Tokunbo. He was almost arrested once in Apata Ibadan he escaped and abandoned the other driver and his own girlfriend, but we later heard that he was killed in a robbery operation in Ogun state. So watch out for the dealer you want to deal with.

Following will help and guide you

   1. Don't buy a cheap car . it comes with a story that the owner needs money , wants to
       travel out of the country.

   2. Don't pay for a car without citing the original documents and check whether is fake or original  .

   3. Don't buy a car on the street , eatery , Petrol station. Go to the dealer's office.

4.Don't send money to his account without seeing what you are paying for.

5.Study and observe your conversation with him on phone, text ,e-mail or in physical contact.

   6. Engage your Spirit whether to buy or not. Its better to trust your spirit than your
       mechanic .

  7. Ask question before payment .

Police treats stolen car case as army robbery, i pray you wont fall a victim in Jesus name.

Regards.

Fear not.

Before buying a car, take the VIN number etc to police TSU(technical Support Unit) they should be able to tell you if its clean or not.

For us in Nigeria, go to the Police to get a certification that the car is not on their wanted or stolen  list.
its advised to take this Police step in addition to others. If you fail to go to the Police and the car is stolen, then the same Police you neglect will make you see the wisdom of having gone to the Police first for clearance.
it does not matter whether brand new or second hand or registered dealer.
Some years ago, a popular registered dealer sold a stolen car to someone, which was traced to Nigeria by Interpol and was recovered from the buyer.
Re: How Do You Guard Against Buying Stolen Vehicles? by hairyman(m): 5:56pm On Mar 11, 2012
everyone is entitled to his opinion, but i will advice that you go do a police check if ever there is anything like that. also make sure you confirm the papers are authentic, that is of absolute importance. about buying from people who are not dealers, there is no problem at all with that, the dealers will actually sell at a costlier price than individuals, some supposed dealers even sell stolen cars like a poster rightly pointed out and i have witnessed myself. Also make sure you have good assurance about the state of the car by whatever means you chose; mechanic, relative, anyone can serve
