"Damn, this guy was once like a god in Nigeria." But in the U.K
he was just a convicted thief who would not be able to get a job in
Tesco as a cashier but got one as a Govenor is Nigeria.

The shameless old mudaphuka of a judge ,

How are you supposed to bring a conviction in a country
that doesn't keep records,
has no capability to perform foresic accounting, no rule of law,
complete and utter reverance to money.
joudini's comment
is exactly the point.
Did the prosecution even appeal?
It is not just Nigeria, it is the whole Sub-Sahara Africa. How long are we
going to continue like this?
What was the point of Independence when we would have been far better under
colonical rule. Or was it the Independence to perform wanton theft?
It is only a matter of time before the rest of the world grows tired of us,
because other that Natural Resources we have nothing else to offer Modern Civilization.

Anyway he just beat everyone else to it, that's all. It is not difficult to see how
honesty, decency and accountablilty cannot function in a society where it is just not normal.

Let's keep waiting for the "white man" to rescue us from ourselves.

The issue here is to let you know how corrupt the judicial system in Nigeria is. In Nigeria, all the charges of corruption against Ibori was thrown out.

Our judicial system here in Nigeria has been compromised and it is only those who stole chicken and goat that gets life sentence here. That is to show you how the judicial system encourage these elites to steal. It's like training the younger ones to follow.

Good that Ibori got convicted because the amount he stole was too much for an individual where people from that State lavish in abject poverty.

@Tradewolf, you are right on point my brother. It is really sad what's going on in Nigeria, I wonder what legacy we will leave to our unborn generation.

@Tradewolf, Please preach brother!! The problem is that poverty has entrenched a culture of ignorance in Nigeria. I am sure some idiot here on this forum will attack your views. Thanks for you refreshing threads.

May God help our Country.
We need other Countries to help serve justice to our criminals.

This is the first time I've witnessed such happening to a Nigerian gov.t official.
Our judiciary is utterly USELESS!

He entered plead bargain so he is not going to jail but only be convicted to return part of his looted funds and some of his properties would be seized, sold and returned to the coffin of the Fed govt.

Nauseating, it's even made headline news on ITV London tonight and being reported by the veteran, Ronke Philips. What a life?

He even stole from DIY store Wickes when he worked there as a cashier. Once a thief always a thief.  Did it have to take British law to bring him to justice for the impoverishment of his own fellow citizens back home?

This crook walked free in Nigeria. That says much about the country, its timid posturing and supposed lame fight against corruption.

The corrupt and incandescently shameless judge(s) that acquitted him and his accomplice of all charges in Nigeria should hang their heads in shame. It has taken more astute and competent judges elsewhere in the world, (UK) to show how incompetent and under-par our Justices and judiciary system are. Camels!

Odji fefe. Ole buruku.

The Black race continues to be the laughing stock of the world. Like someone pointed out, apart from the natural resources Africa has, we do not contribute anything to the rest of the world. Its so sad! I mean this guy who couldn't get a job as a store clerk in Britain becoming the governor of a state is just ridiculous to say the least. I wish Nigeria the best, Its a curse to be black!

waoh, the lion looks so tamed now. What a change of fate.

The people he killed by appropriating money for hospitals, roads, the good and quality education he deprived millions only to provide his children the best in developed societies, the people he rendered homeless by embezzling money apportioned for housing and other infrastructure will haunt him and his allies.

Though it took people in other continents to convict the enemy within, his story shall be handed down from generation to generation, archived on websites, blogs, servers and the mind.

If GEJ was looking for proof that the whole system is rottern, here it is. Same man qas acquitted of all charges in Nigeria, where the evidence is so abundant, yet he is found guilty and will face jail. I wonder if we will hear any comments from the President

This is the danger that stems from viewing things from a Nigerian perspective. We all know the Nigerian perspective is one so bastardized as to be utterly ridiculous. The UK is not Nigeria. First of all, there is no "plea bargain" that will spare Ibori a prison sentence. Secondly, Ibori has merely pled guilty to avoid the maximum sentence available to the judge. Dragging on the case, when clearly guilty, to waste time and resources will predispose a judge to 'throwing the books' at Ibori. Pleading guilty at the earliest opportunity is itself merit for sentencing leniency . That is what has happened here. Ibori will still be jailed for 7-10 years in my opinion.
Re: Ibori Pleads Guilty To Money Laundering Charges In London Court by monkeyleg: 8:43pm On Feb 27, 2012
His plea bargain will make little or no difference. Ibori has been convicted 3 times in the Uk, which makes him a repeat offender, Judges normally dont take kindly to that sort of thing, infact he is seen as dengerous and will be held securely at her Majesties Pleasure. Most likely heading to Wormwood scrubs

My brother, please don't join Nigerians with their warped interpretation of situations that stems from how we come from a lawless nation where anything goes. Until you see an authoritative report from a British news source (Since Ibori is being tries in that Country) I would suggest you ignore all talks of "plea bargain". As far as I know, only Nigerian news sources are 'running away' with that notion and, as usual, decieving Nigerians. What is going on here is simple. It is likely Ibori has been encouraged to do this by his legal team to gain sentencing leniency.

The UK is a Nation, like most others that work, where it is accepted ,and demonstrated, that stiff punishment must follow serious misconduct to discourage others likely to be tempted towards criminal behaviour. What "plea bargain" will suddenly see Ibori walk from jail (as some Nigerians simplistically think will happen) when others doing the bidding of the 'brain' (Ibori) behinds these criminal acts have already received 5 years and more in jail?

Some Nigerians must think the UK is a joke like our Nation where the man who steal yam gets 10 years with hard labour while Igbinedion and terrorist killers recieves monetary fines. Ibori, as the mastermind behind all this, will recieve the highest sentence because the law will hold that these crimes would not have been committed without Ibori abusing his position as Governor to initiate theft and money laundering.

Dozens of Ibori supporters were in court to hear his guilty pleas and claimed he was the victim of his "political enemies" - Sky News.

Really?

Well, like J Clackson would say - They (Ibori's supporters) all need to be taken outside and shot in front of their families. Crikey!

Thank GOD for a morally upright judicial system in Uk. However, I think that his guilty plea is not ordinary.

Oh please shut the fck up.

The ''morally upright UK system'' currently is home to more than $3 Trillion in stolen funds from all over the world including Nigeria. If they really went for that money the UK would go bankrupt.

Far better my assss.

What happened under colonial rule? The British ruled for 63 years and built not a single university or expressway in the country. Infrastructure - rudimentary to non existent. Average Life Expectancy was 31 years, 93% of the population were illiterate, and as there was no power grid, annual generation was 240 mw, (compare that to 4,300 mw today) meaning that the overwhelming majority of Nigerians had no access to electricity till the British left.

So please spare us this garbage of being 'better under colonial rule'. At least today the govt may be corrupt but you can still see some degree of infrastructure and services being put in place. Under colonialism, any such stuff was confined to IKOYI and GRA where the whites lived, and from where blacks were barred (except servants and drivers) The colonial govt SIPHONED over 95% of annual export earnings, and sent straight back to the UK.

So count your blessings.
