2,000 Unemployed Youths Sit For Agric-yes Exam In Agege, Lagos by mukina2: 1:56pm On Feb 27, 2012
About 2,000 unemployed youths stormed the Lagos State Agricultural Development Authority, ADA, Agege, Lagos, southwest Nigeria, last week to sit for the Agricultural Youth Empowerment Scheme, Agric-YES, examination.

The Agric-YES is a programme aimed at empowering the youths of Lagos State in modern agricultural practice. The overall aim of the scheme is to breed a new generation of agro-entrepreneurs in poultry, fish farming, bee-keeping and all season vegetable farming.

The successful applicants will undergo a six-month course at the Agricultural Training Institute, Araga, Epe.

From the 2,000 youths who sat for the examination last week, only 100 successful applicants will be taken to participate in the six months scheme, where the youths will be equipped in mechanised agriculture and given micro-credit facilities to set up their own agric ventures.

Some of the youths who spoke with Alausa Rhythms shortly before writing the examination lauded the programme but lamented that only 100 youths would be taken out of the 2,000. They appealed to the government to extend the number to 500.

While the world is celebrating innovation, and invention, Nigeria is proud with only 100 employed youths in farming. Ok. Which way forward, Nigeria?

This is not silly palliative. It was a well designed program. take a tour to Epe and see for yourself.
Kudos to BRF. Nice initiative.

After the training what next? When do we intend moving from subsistence to commercial farming? Is the government willing to supply the youths with all they need to go commercial at the end of the program

Good move by Lagos state government to address unemployment in the state and the country in general but the number is alarmingly too small.Lets believe that the program will be in phases;and this is the first phase, that's the reason for only 100 in- takes.

Government will establish the 100 people. Give them facilities and everything they need, including loan, land, house to live. All these will be done with Government's close supervision.
What more do you need from a responsible Government.

If this is the way PDP has been 'eating' our money, maybe we will not be in mess by now.

FASHOLA FOR PRESIDENT 2015.

i GO OVERVOTE FOR YOU SEF!!

I was a participant of the Test, 40 question in all, planning, organization and arrangement were properly implemented. I am still scared as the number of participants is really above 2000. Once more, this has proven the youths are ready to work and measures leading to gainful engagement should be looked into by the government not only in agriculture but other sectors of the economy. We all can't be president or Governors or senators, We just want to be Okay!!!

FM7070, must we politicize everything on here or what is the special thing he is doing He wants to create job for a 100 people which is far less than 1% of the unemployed in Lagos and you make it sound like he's the best. Besides, this is yet to be achieved thus, can you slow down a bit in terms of your praises for the government?

This is course 4, Already courses 1,2 and 3 are already executed. This means that 300 people have already benefited from the problem since its commencement in 2009 by the BRF administration.

I still don't understand why some people choose to praise the government for doing a shabby job. We have so much unemployed youths and nothing is being done to create jobs for them and yet we hail the governor for promising a 100 jobs (training only). If he wants to do something worthwhile, then he should be ready to establish them big time perhaps through some agricultural scheme and not for them to be raising 50layers. How long do we want to continue with such farming system
