The Unforgivable Blunders Of Ojukwu During The Biafran War! by Thatdave(m): 10:52am On Feb 28, 2012
Ojukwu is a great man,

But let us remember that he took so many bad decisions during the war:

1. He let them kill Nzogwu the Great! People rumoured that he was afraid Nzeogwu will challenge his authority after the war. Nzeogwu was the man who was determined to wipe Nigeria clean of all the crooked politicians and soldiers as Ghana later did. It was said that he let the soldiers withdraw too soon so that Nzeogwu got trapped at the war front with little troops.

2. He Refused to Quit the war after the first year on seeing that we cant win.

3. He dethroned his generals (because they tried to advise him) and made civilians his war generals! eg. Colonel Achuzia was never a soldier for one day!

4. When the war became so bitter and the Biafran weapons got finished

He would load hundreds of young men into trailers and arm them with clubs and matchettes and dump them at the war front telling them that 'hausas' are fools. 'Kill them all' . The nigerian war tank will just lower its 50s and open fire on 'unarmed' biafran soldiers in the war front!

5. He doesn't plan battles, he just fights with emotion. Everyone who tried to advise him got deposed and thrown into jail. A biafran high ranking officer once narrated in his book that he drove from Enugu to the war front at abakaliki only to discover that Biafran soldiers who were droped by Ojukwu and were facing the Nigerian superior military might punishment didnt even dig trenches. So he ordered them to start digging trenches right at the battle field! This he said prevented the Nigerian tanks from over running the Biafrans on the very first day of battle!

6. He should have more intelligently accepted a truce a year or two before the end of the war when men like Zik, Akanu Ibiam etc advised him it was impossible to win the war.

7. When men finished, he started 'arming' children and using them as his soldiers for battle!

8. Biafran medics never had stretchers from day one, they were called porters because they were often made up of four men who would carry the wounded on their head and run to the rear of the battle field. This was to get worse in the third year of the war as Biafran soldiers left their wounded and fled battle fields!

9. He didnt plan the preparation of the war! He just started fighting with the available resources. He should have got big countries like America and Britain to support Biafra(atleast in exchange of some oil). Gowon for instance agreed with Cameroun not to let Biafrans get weapon supplies from the camerounian border in exchange for the Bakassi peninsula. This alone made the Biafran resistance very miserable.

But above all, he didnt cause the war. He fought for us all. He fought with his resources. He survived. He came back and contested for presidency! Built APGA and gave the Igbos another chance in Politics!

Adieu Ikemba!

ojukwu was probably the dullest military strategist ever!

the man declared the seceding of biafra with emotions and without plan. he knew not what he was up against. arrogance and the general belief of superiority of igbos blinded his eyes to the fact that fantasies are not the same as reality

You have started your tribalism again. Must you comment on every thread about Ojukwu. Do you not have a life outside Ojukwu, East or Biafra.
Quit tribalism, you can not win.

Comming to rape, i think Nigerian Soldiers did more.
Have you watched 'tears of the rising sun' ? A film by Hollywood.
Nigerian soldiers even cut breasts of biafran women!

But Ojukwu was a poor soldier.
He was never really one though.

He made only two good military decisions out of his entire life!

1. Warned the foolish Aguiyironsi not to leave his presidential villa during that time of unrest.
2. Deciding to survive the war at the right time.
Otherwise he could have tried to escape so late as Gaddafi did.
His decision to survive saved the Biafrans the last shame of their lives as the Nigerians would have fed his corpse to the vultures.
(much the lesson that was thought with Aguiyironsi's body).

Ojukwu was a great man but a poor soldier.

Thatdave or Aribisala depending on what you want to call yourself, this is a no time to start this nonsense of being a poor soldier or not. Ikemba is gone and people who loved him are mourning.
For the sake of peace, stop this nonsense.

Ojukwu is our hero bcus of the following:
1)he never kill innocent people of tiv's when fulani's millitary gave command for him to murder tiv's.
2) he never hates no one like Ahmad bello hated the igbo's.
3)we love him bcus he is there for his people when the bloody fulani's and hausa's went on killing inocent people of the south.
4)we love him bcus he outsmarted north and west put togather at Aburi. (one man against 9 fools yet he outsmart them)
5)we love him cus, he is a detribalzed leader who love others as he love his own.
we love him cus he is bloodless man. do u want me to continue

Thank God I wasn't born during the war but from what I have been able to gather from history books, documentaries, etc, the Ojukwu man wasn't quite smart. I wonder where he got his own military training from? undecided

Another thing I have observed is that about 90% to 99% percent of the igbos singing and shouting "ikemba our heroo! i kemba our hero!!" today are people of my age grade that never witnessed the war. Their elders seem to be acting matured and just flowing with the tides. Anyway RIP to the man sha lipsrsealed

No one is above mistakes. Yes, he made mistakes but he stood and fought against the injustice that was meted out to the easterners at that time. Question is who amongst the Politicians of present day Nigeria has ever stood for his or her people like Ojukwu did. Ojukwu is loved by his people irrespective of his mistakes, Rest in Peace Ikemba Ike

He was a very poor soldier though but a very smart and audacious leader whom through his speech could muster the whole igbo tribe to war.

However, does anyone have an idea if Nigeria has fought and won any war except the Biafran war in which they had so much casualty against the poorly equiped and ragtag Biafran  army led by the poor soldier Ojuku,
Me thinks if the poorly equiped and ragtag Biafran  army led by the poor soldier Ojuku could hold the Nigerian army for 3 months with heavy military casualties even with the support of USSR , UK,USA,Egypt, Arab world and using food as means of war, then well equiped Biafran army would have done maximum damage.

Really  the problem of Nigeria came into Radar when Cameroun took over Bakassi without any resistance and was even threatening Cross River
and all the noise makers who often Boast of how they will spill the last drop of their blood to keep Nigeria together and even look for tailors to sow army uniforms could not do anything.

Sorry, no harm intended, but I don't think leading millions of his people to the grave was a smart move in any sense sha. You might want to think of how many million  widows, widowers, orphans, etc that were created in igbo land after the war isn't that worst than the 'injustice'? And another question: Did/Have the war solved the 'injustice'?

a coward dies a thousand deaths, a soldier dies but once.

fact is ojukwu ran away (with his tail between his legs) to ivory coast. he came back to nigeria downgraded himself from trying to lead the igbo nation to being a mere senator in one of the igbo states and failed woefully. that not down he tried to be president(i think twice) and yet again failed woefully. not done he wanted his political party to be the darling of the igbo nation and once again failed in that dream.

from the above it is safe to say,the igbo nation failed and killed him a thousand times over before his actual death.
Re: The Unforgivable Blunders Of Ojukwu During The Biafran War! by kettykin: 12:42pm On Feb 28, 2012
@ poster, if Ojukwu was a coward then millions of people will prefer to die as a coward than live as warrrior.

I prefer to have an army led by 1 ojukwu who as a col in nigerian army will dare the world and pull out of the Country and fail than 1000 General O.O Diya who will weep and defeacate in his Khaki before a Major Al mustapha ( the First Nigerian General to weep before a Major)

I guess you are not privy to events in Nigeria cause if u r, u will definitely not ask such a DAFT QUESTION!

[b]The war spread the injustice to other regions including yours
! Above all, the war made the flaw in the contraption called Nigeria so obvious to everyone!

Thesame people he led into a senseless war that killed millions abi undecided

The war only made 'injustice' the middle name of the igbos sir. Thats why they keep complaining of lack of federal presence in the east, also minority ethnic groups in Nigeria have tested the presidency several times but what can you say of the igbos (A 'major' ethnic group)?

Unfortuanately, the bolded is very true. Thesame people singing his praises "our hero! our hero" never supported his political aspirations. The east chose PDP over APGA. How many votes did Ojukwu pulled in the east when he contested as the presidential candidate of APGA?

FACT - Ndi Igbo are not the only ones complaining  of injustice in Nigeria. As it stands now, the yorubas are actually the ones complaining more of injustice followed by the middle-belt states and recently the core northern states!

FACT - Lack of Federal presence in the east still doesn't stop our states from being the most developed in Nigeria! If nothing, the war thought us to be self reliant!

FACT - Minority states have truly tasted the presidency yes! but the question is, where did it left there people afterwards? for instance, Plateau, Niger and Bayelsa still remained the most impoverished states in Nigeria. I will advice you to visit the eastern states which was thoroughly demolished and destroyed 40 years ago and you will be amazed at the level of development there - I will quote IBB's statement when he visited anambra state 17 years ago - "Unbelievable!"

On the issue of Ndi Igbo not supporting ojukwu's political ambition, its simply a mater of his people feeling that he has done enough good and therefore deserves to take a deserved break but that doesn't change the fact that he, until his death remained a major political power broker hence the desire of every political aspirant be it from the north, east and west to first seek his blessings before venturing to campaign for the support of ndi igbo!
GBAM!! they thought SE is underdeveloped like their regions hehehehehehe okay oh let them still believing in their useless past egos that lead them to poverty, igbo created Nigeria and tasted the power and fight Nigeria for 3yrs stand they refuse beg UK, Russia and Egypt 4 help because they need us to survive, now we came back lift ourselves back to the top and even better, none of their leaders can say shiit about ojukwu cus they know what will happen to them cool

@kokoA, Τhe Biafran widows, widowers and orphans were/are comforted by the fact that their loved ones died for a just cause but the same cannot be said of their counterpart in the present day Nigeria who lost their loved ones in the hands of the BH boys or during the fuel subsidy saga. Though huge casualties were recorded on both sides during the war, however, the point that is clear to all and made possible by the war is that nobody should undermine the strenght of a people determined to survive against all odds. Igbo's have Ojukwu to thank for that and that is more than enough to accord him the kind of respect and honour being shown to him on his final home coming. He was the strenght of Igboland, the Ijele. Oh yes!, Τhe injustice is still persistence but sadly there is no Ojukwu to stand for the people either through jaw-jaw or war-war.

I'm even surprise that he failed to mention "impossible!"

He, together with Buhari and Abacha were Murtala Muhammed's lieutenant during their invasion of Onitsha through Nsukka.

They were infamous for their ruthlessness.

They wrecked havoc in their wake, reduced every town they passed to dust(Nsukka, Awka, Abagana, Ogidi, Nkpor, Onitsha etc), violated all the women they encountered, killed all the men. Then took some women hostage to act their sex slaves.

Who on earth would have thought that we will emerge from that ruin?
